USB-C vs HDMI: What to Know Before Connecting a Display

HDMI is usually simplest when both devices have HDMI ports. USB-C can output video only on supported devices, so verify the port, adapter and display specifications.

HDMI is usually the straightforward choice when both devices have HDMI ports. USB-C can carry video too, but only when the source device’s USB-C port supports video output and the cable or adapter supports the signal you need. The names are not equivalent: USB-C describes a connector, while HDMI is an audio/video interface. Check the exact devices and the entire connection chain before choosing a cable.

What USB-C and HDMI mean

USB-C is a reversible connector used for different combinations of data, power and, on supported devices, video. The connector alone does not tell you which capabilities a port has. A laptop’s USB-C port might support video while another USB-C port—or the same kind of port on a phone—does not.

HDMI is a digital audio/video interface used by computers, televisions, monitors and other equipment. In everyday usage, “HDMI” may refer to the interface, its familiar full-size connector or a cable carrying HDMI signals; the key distinction here is that HDMI is designed for audio/video, while USB-C is a connector that can carry different kinds of signals.

How USB-C carries video

DisplayPort Alternate Mode

A common way to send video through USB-C is DisplayPort Alternate Mode. It uses the USB-C connection to carry DisplayPort signals, repurposing connector pins and cable wires for that interface. A compatible adapter or adapter cable can convert the output to an HDMI input. DisplayPort explains the mode and compatible display connections in its official FAQ.

Anker USB C to HDMI Adapter (4K@60Hz), USB Type C to HDMI Cable Adapter | 4K HDMI for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Pro, Pixelbook, XPS, Galaxy, and More(Compatible with Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • The Anker Advantage: Join the 80 million+ powered by our leading technology.
  • Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
  • Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
  • Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
  • Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.

This is how many USB-C-to-HDMI adapters work: they accept DisplayPort video from the USB-C source and convert it for an HDMI display. They do not make a USB-C port that lacks video output send a picture.

HDMI Alt Mode

HDMI Alt Mode is a separate implementation for carrying HDMI signals over USB-C. HDMI Licensing Administrator says its HDMI Alt Mode specification supports HDMI 1.4b. Do not confuse a cable or adapter that uses this mode with the more common purchase description “USB-C to HDMI,” which may instead rely on DisplayPort Alternate Mode and conversion. The adapter or cable documentation should identify the mode and compatible source devices. See the HDMI Alt Mode explanation.

Which connection should you choose?

Setup Usually practical choice What to verify
HDMI source to HDMI display Direct HDMI cable That the cable and both devices support your required resolution, refresh rate, HDR and audio features.
USB-C source to HDMI display Compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or adapter cable The source port supports video output; the adapter accepts the source’s video mode and is rated for the intended display mode.
USB-C source to USB-C display USB-C cable, if both devices support video over USB-C Video support and the required data, charging and display capabilities on the host, display and cable.
One-cable desk setup Compatible USB-C display or dock That the host, dock or display and cable support the video mode, USB data and charging you need. Available power and data vary by product.

When both devices have suitable HDMI ports, a direct HDMI connection avoids the question of whether the USB-C source supports video. For DisplayPort-over-USB-C to a DisplayPort monitor, DisplayPort’s FAQ recommends an adapter cable and cautions that a USB-C-to-DisplayPort receptacle adapter can cause poor picture quality or intermittent or absent display in that particular setup. That warning is specific to the DP-to-DP case.

Check the full display chain, not just the connector

Neither USB-C nor HDMI is automatically the resolution or refresh-rate winner. The source, display and every cable or adapter between them must support the desired signal. Check specifications for resolution, refresh rate, HDR and audio; if charging or USB data must travel through the same connection, check those capabilities separately too.

DisplayPort’s USB-C overview describes configurations of up to 8K at 60 Hz over DisplayPort over USB-C and power delivery of up to 100 watts. These are capability examples, not guarantees for every USB-C port, cable, adapter or display. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s overview lists HDMI 2.2 capabilities including 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 240 Hz. Those figures describe different specification contexts, not results measured on the same hardware. Consult the relevant DisplayPort USB-C overview and HDMI specification overview, then check the product manuals for your exact equipment.

A cable’s rating matters when you need a particular feature or mode. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes its Premium Cable Certification Program for use cases such as 4K at 60 Hz and HDR. USB-IF says its cable certification program covers cable assemblies defined in USB 2.0, USB 3.2 and USB Type-C specifications. Certification or a connector shape alone does not establish that a particular complete setup supports every desired display mode; verify the product rating and device specifications.

How to confirm a USB-C port supports video

  1. Look up the exact source device. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation for the specific laptop, tablet or phone, and look for video output over USB-C, DisplayPort Alternate Mode, or another explicitly supported USB-C display mode. Do not infer video support from the port’s shape or charging ability.
  2. Check the display input. Confirm whether you will connect to HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C and select that input on the display.
  3. Match the adapter or cable to the source mode. For a USB-C source and HDMI display, confirm that the product supports the source’s video mode and the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. Check the product’s compatibility details rather than relying on “USB-C” in its name.
  4. Confirm the complete signal requirements. Verify that source, adapter or cable, and display all support the desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR and audio. Check charging and USB data separately if they must share the connection.

Microsoft’s Windows USB-C FAQ describes Alternate Mode for projecting audio and video to DisplayPort displays and notes that unsupported alternate-mode devices or adapters can report an error. DisplayPort also answers the question of how to tell whether a Type-C connector supports DisplayPort in its FAQ. The device maker’s specifications remain the practical check for a particular port.

Troubleshoot a USB-C-to-display connection with no picture

  • Confirm video output first. Recheck the source device’s exact port specifications; a USB-C-shaped port without video support cannot output a display signal through an adapter.
  • Check mode and direction. Verify that the adapter is intended for a USB-C video source and the display input you are using, and that it supports the source’s mode.
  • Select the correct display input. Use the monitor or TV’s input controls to choose the port connected to the cable.
  • Recheck ratings and documentation. Confirm the cable or adapter supports the display mode and that each device supports the same connection method.
  • Look for an operating-system error where relevant. Microsoft notes Windows may expose a Billboard device with information about an unsupported Alternate Mode connection.

What to buy for a common setup

For HDMI-to-HDMI, use a suitable HDMI cable and match its rating to the features your devices support. For USB-C-to-HDMI, first establish that the source port outputs video, then choose an adapter or adapter cable documented for that source mode and rated for the target display signal. The connector names alone cannot establish that a specific accessory will work with a particular device combination.
