USB-C vs. 3.5mm Audio: Which Connection Sounds Better?

Neither USB-C nor a 3.5 mm jack wins on sound quality by default. The DAC, amplifier, headphones, and device compatibility matter more than the connector.

Neither USB-C nor a 3.5 mm headphone jack guarantees better sound. A phone’s jack converts digital audio to analog inside the phone; USB-C can send digital audio to a compatible accessory, where a DAC converts it. Sound depends on the conversion and amplification hardware, the headphones, the phone’s audio processing and output limits, and compatibility—not the connector alone.

What changes between a 3.5 mm jack and USB-C?

A 3.5 mm output carries analog audio. The phone’s internal digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and amplifier prepare the signal for headphones before it reaches the jack.

USB-C can carry digital audio to an accessory. In that setup, a DAC in the headphones or adapter converts the digital signal to analog. Android’s documentation describes this transfer from a USB host to a peripheral and the peripheral’s DAC: Android USB audio documentation.

That difference changes where conversion happens; it does not, by itself, determine how good the result sounds. Moving conversion away from a phone’s crowded circuit board may offer engineering advantages, but it is not proof that every USB-C accessory outperforms every headphone jack. A well-designed USB-C DAC can beat a weak phone output, while a poor adapter can sound worse.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter | USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter with white finish for audio, music and calls
  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.

What determines sound quality?

  • DAC and amplifier: Their design and performance affect noise, distortion, frequency response, and the signal available to the headphones.
  • Output capability: The output must provide suitable voltage and power for the particular headphones. A connection that works may still not drive demanding headphones adequately.
  • Headphones and audio processing: The headphones themselves, along with the phone’s processing and output limits, are part of the playback chain.
  • Listening level: A fair comparison requires closely matched volume. The louder option can seem better even when it is not.

There is no universally superior connection established by the available official documentation, and it does not provide controlled, matched-level measurements comparing specific phones with specific adapters.

How to compare two real options

Use the same headphones and source material with each connection, and match listening levels as closely as you can. Then compare the factors that matter for your use:

Will USB-C headphones or an adapter work with your phone?

USB-C is a connector, not a guarantee of digital-audio compatibility. Check the exact phone’s specifications and the accessory’s requirements. Google advises Pixel users: “If you’re using USB-C accessories, including adapters, check that they work with digital audio.” See Google Pixel’s audio-accessory guidance.

  • 【Warm Tips】 If your USB C device includes a 3.5mm audio jack, this adapter may not support phone calls. For example, some models for Galaxy (S9/S8/S10, Note 9/Note 8) and for iPad Pro (11" / 12.9", including iPad Pro 2018) may not support phone calls or music control

For a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, check that it contains a DAC when the phone sends digital USB audio. Android’s adapter documentation describes conversion of two digital output channels to analog: Android’s USB-C-to-analog adapter guidance. A simple cable does not necessarily perform that conversion. Do not assume a passive adapter will work unless the phone maker documents support for analog audio accessory mode.

Google’s Pixel guidance says Pixel phones can use USB-C audio accessories and Bluetooth; it identifies Pixel 3a, 4a, and 4a (5G) as models with a 3.5 mm jack and says other Pixel phones can use an adapter for 3.5 mm accessories. Because support varies by model and lineups change, confirm the specifications for your exact phone rather than applying family-level guidance to every device.

What to check if USB-C audio does not work as expected

  • No sound: Confirm that the phone supports USB-C digital audio and that the accessory supports the phone’s audio mode. Google’s guidance for Pixel USB-C earbuds says, “Make sure the device uses USB-C digital audio.”
  • Audio works but controls or calls do not: Playback compatibility does not guarantee microphone, button, or call support. Google notes that some devices may not support calls through USB-C earbuds.
  • Sound is too quiet or unsatisfactory: Check the phone’s output settings and the accessory’s specifications, including whether its output is suitable for your headphones. A different DAC can change the result, but it does not necessarily improve it.

For those additional checks, see Google’s instructions for using USB-C earbuds with Pixel. Some devices may also require USB audio to be enabled in sound settings.
