Choose the connection your source and display both support, then confirm it can deliver your target resolution and refresh rate through every adapter, dock, and cable in the path. USB-C is a connector shape, not a promise of video output: its port must support a video mode such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode or HDMI Alt Mode. Neither HDMI nor DisplayPort is universally better for every setup.
Start with the ports and video support on both devices
First identify the output on your computer, tablet, or phone and the input on your monitor or TV. A USB-C port can carry data and power without supporting video. For video over USB-C, the source must explicitly support a suitable mode, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) or HDMI Alt Mode. Check the specifications for your exact device and port; the USB-C shape alone is not enough.

DP Alt Mode carries DisplayPort video over USB-C, using some or all of the connector’s high-speed lanes. A USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter can connect that output to a DisplayPort display. If the display has HDMI instead, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can convert the signal for that input. The reverse direction is not automatically supported: check that any adapter is designed for your source and display combination.

- Source has USB-C and display has HDMI: Confirm the source supports video over USB-C, then choose an adapter explicitly rated for the output mode you need.
- Source has USB-C and display has DisplayPort: Look for a compatible USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter, and verify its stated resolution and refresh rate.
- Both devices have a suitable direct connection: Compare the available HDMI and DisplayPort ports before adding an adapter or dock.
- You need extra ports as well as video: A USB-C dock may help, but its video output still depends on host support and the dock’s own specifications.
Compare the complete signal path, not just the connector names
The usable display mode is determined by the whole chain: source hardware and settings, interface generation, lane allocation, any compression, adapter or dock, cable, and display. A connection that works at one resolution or refresh rate may not support a more demanding mode. Check the specifications for every component against the display mode you actually want, including color depth and HDR where relevant.

For example, VESA’s DisplayPort Alt Mode presentation gives single-display examples under specific lane, link-rate, and color-format assumptions. With four lanes at maximum link rate and no compression, it shows 5K (5120×2800) at 60 fps for DisplayPort 1.4a and 10K (10240×4320) at 60 fps for DisplayPort 2.0. With two lanes, it shows 4K at 60 fps for DP 1.4a and 8K at 30 fps for DP 2.0. The presentation notes that two-lane operation is common for USB-C DP Alt Mode; these examples are not promises for an arbitrary laptop, adapter, or dock. See VESA’s DisplayPort Alt Mode presentation.
Why HDMI version figures need context
HDMI capability varies by specification generation and by the devices and cables in use. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI 1.4b feature page lists 4096×2160 at 24 Hz; 3840×2160 at 24, 25, or 30 Hz; and 1920×1080 at 120 Hz. Those are examples for HDMI 1.4b, not a description of every HDMI connection. Read the HDMI 1.4b feature list.

- Choose HDMI when the display’s suitable input is HDMI and your source offers compatible HDMI output, directly or through a verified USB-C adapter. Check the required mode against the HDMI generation and cable specifications.
- Choose DisplayPort when the display and source support it and its stated capabilities meet your needs. For a USB-C source, verify DP Alt Mode support and the adapter or cable’s lane and mode capabilities.
- Choose an adapter when the source and display use different inputs. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is useful only if the USB-C source outputs video and the adapter supports the target mode; an adapter cannot make a non-video USB-C port produce a picture.
- Choose a dock when you also need additional connections. Treat its HDMI or DisplayPort output as another component to verify, not as a guarantee that every host and display mode will work.
Check compatibility before buying
- Look up the exact source-device model. Confirm that the particular USB-C port supports video output, and identify whether it uses DP Alt Mode, HDMI Alt Mode, or another documented video capability.
- Check the display input. Note whether the monitor or TV accepts HDMI, DisplayPort, or both, and confirm its supported resolution and refresh rate for the intended input.
- Set your target mode. Include resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and HDR requirements rather than relying on a headline maximum.
- Verify every intermediary. Check the adapter or dock and cable specifications for the source mode, display input, and target mode. If a cable certification matters for the chosen HDMI mode, HDMI Licensing Administrator describes its Premium Cable Certification Program.
- Prefer a direct supported connection when available. If an adapter or dock is necessary, buy one explicitly specified for the source and display combination; do not assume that all USB-C video adapters work in both directions.
