USB-C Storage: Choose Between Flash Drives and Portable SSDs

Choose a USB-C flash drive for simple, compact transfers or compare portable SSDs for capacity and performance. Learn how to weigh specifications, compatibility, and availability.

The best USB-C storage depends on what you need to carry: choose a flash drive for compact everyday transfers, or compare portable SSDs when higher capacity and performance matter more. A USB-C connector alone does not determine speed. Check the drive’s USB generation, your device’s port, and the evidence behind any speed claim before buying.

Which type of USB-C storage fits your use?

Choose a flash drive for simple, pocketable transfers

A USB-C flash drive is a practical fit for moving documents, photos, or other files between compatible devices. The Kingston DataTraveler 70 is a basic option with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB variants. Kingston lists its weight as 7g and its warranty as five years. Those details come from the manufacturer’s product page; it does not provide a specific measured transfer rate there.

Compare portable SSDs for capacity and performance priorities

A portable SSD is worth considering when you need more storage or prioritize transfer performance. TechRadar names the Samsung T9 its best overall portable SSD in its 2026 guide and reports its own test results. That is TechRadar’s assessment, not a universal ranking or a test conducted for this article.

How to compare USB-C drives fairly

Use the same criteria for each candidate, and separate manufacturer specifications from independent test results. Prices and stock depend on your region and can change, so check current retailer listings before deciding.

#1 Best Overall
Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

SanDisk Extreme PRO USB-C flash drive SanDisk lists capacities up to 2TB and maximum read/write speeds of 1000/900MB/s on its product page. People seeking a high-capacity flash-drive format. These are manufacturer maximums, not independent test results. Check the exact variant, compatibility, price, and stock.
Kingston DataTraveler 70 Kingston lists 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB variants, USB 3.2 Gen 1, 7g weight, and a five-year warranty on its product page. Everyday transfers where listed operating-system support and warranty matter. The page gives no specific measured rate. Kingston says actual speed varies with host hardware, software, and usage.
Samsung T9 portable SSD TechRadar’s 2026 guide calls it its best overall portable SSD and reports results from its own testing. People considering an SSD for performance and larger storage needs. The ranking and results belong to TechRadar; check the guide for its test conditions and the current model details.

For a like-for-like decision, compare live regional price per capacity, capacity options, physical size, connector and USB generation, host compatibility, independently measured performance where available, and warranty. Do not treat a manufacturer’s maximum speed as equivalent to a reviewer’s measured result.

What USB-C speed and compatibility actually mean

USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guaranteed transfer rate. The drive’s USB interface and the host device’s port both affect the connection. Kingston identifies the DataTraveler 70 as USB 3.2 Gen 1 and cautions that “Actual speed may vary depending on host hardware, software and usage.” That qualification appears on its manufacturer page.

Confirm the port support of the device you will use and look for independent testing when comparing performance claims.

Check operating-system support for the exact model

Kingston lists compatibility for the DataTraveler 70 with Windows 10/11, recent macOS versions, Linux, and Chrome OS. SanDisk’s cited Creator-series datasheet lists USB-C devices and Android 8+, Windows 10+, and macOS 12+ support. These statements describe the listed products and systems; they do not establish that every phone, camera, file system, or workflow will work. Confirm the exact model’s current requirements before purchase.

What to know about Samsung’s announced USB4 drives

Samsung Electronics announced the P9 and P7 USB4 portable SSDs on August 26, 2026. Its announcement claims speeds up to 4,000MB/s and describes the P9 as an 8TB drive. Those are announcement claims, not independent test results. The announcement alone does not confirm retail availability in your region, so verify launch status, supported host interfaces, and local stock before treating either model as an available purchase.

For reference, see Samsung Electronics’ announcement. USB4 performance also depends on compatible host hardware; a USB-C-shaped port by itself does not establish support for a drive’s maximum rate.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Choose the format: pick a flash drive for compact file carrying; consider a portable SSD if capacity and performance are higher priorities.
  2. Set a capacity target: compare the exact capacity variant you need, not just the largest capacity advertised for a product family.
  3. Check the connection end to end: verify the drive’s USB generation and the host device’s supported interface.
  4. Confirm compatibility: check the manufacturer’s current requirements for your computer, phone, or other device, and make sure your intended workflow is supported.
  5. Read speed claims carefully: distinguish manufacturer maximums from independently measured results, and account for host and workload limits.
  6. Compare ownership details: check local price, stock, physical size, and warranty for the exact model and variant.
