USB-C MST Docks vs. DisplayLink Docks: What’s the Difference?

MST docks split native DisplayPort video; DisplayLink docks send graphics over USB using software. The right choice depends on your computer, OS, and display needs.

The key difference is how video reaches the monitors: an MST dock splits a computer’s native DisplayPort video stream, while a DisplayLink dock sends graphics over USB using host software. MST therefore depends on DisplayPort video and Multi-Stream Transport support in the computer and dock; DisplayLink depends on compatible software and a DisplayLink-enabled device. For a Mac that needs multiple independent external screens from one dock, don’t assume an MST dock will work: Plugable says macOS does not support MST for multiple independent extended displays.

How MST and DisplayLink send video

MST: native DisplayPort video

Multi-Stream Transport (MST) is part of the native DisplayPort display path. A USB-C connection can carry DisplayPort audio/video alongside USB data and power, and a dock can use a DisplayPort branch device to feed multiple displays. The computer’s graphics hardware and USB-C/DisplayPort path, the dock, and the monitors all need to support the relevant features; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video or MST support. The VESA DisplayPort FAQ describes a USB-C dock connection that can carry charging power, USB data, and DisplayPort Alt Mode audio/video for one or more displays.

For daisy chaining, Microsoft says the displays must support at least DisplayPort 1.2 and MST, and the PC GPU must support DisplayPort 1.2 and MST. Microsoft also cautions that resolution and refresh rate decrease when multiple displays are daisy chained. See Microsoft’s Surface USB4 Dock overview.

DisplayLink: graphics sent over USB

DisplayLink uses a different architecture: host software sends graphics over USB to a DisplayLink-enabled dock or adapter. DisplayLink says its products can connect to a USB-C host, but that does not mean every USB-C computer supports every DisplayLink device or display mode. Supported resolutions depend on the DisplayLink device and connected displays.

SIIG USB-C MST Docking Station, Dual 4K60Hz, 60W PD, JU-DK0N11-S1
  • USB-C Docking Station: This docking station transforms a single USB-C port on your computer (DP Alt mode and Thunderbolt 3 compatible) to connect to multiple devices, including HDMI enabled displays, external HDDs, flash drives, Ethernet, headset (speaker & microphone) and SD memory card.
  • Dual 4K HDMI - The docking station is powered with multi-stream transport (MST) technology to extend video signal from your laptop or desktop computer to two HDMI displays, monitors, or projectors.
  • Superb Resolutions - The dock delivers 4K@60Hz (DP1.4 with DSC) on two monitors. DisplayPort 1.4 is required to meet the resolution above. Refer to video output table in detail within the user manual.
  • Continuous Power Support - The docking station supports up to 60 watts of Power Delivery via the package included USB-C 5V/20A cable, which provides non-stop power for laptops, notebooks, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Wide Applications - This MST dock is widely useful in different circumstances, such as office, media editing, education, financial, workstation, web design studio, control centers, working from home, photo shooting studio, reception room, and many more.

On macOS, DisplayLink use involves installing DisplayLink Manager and granting it Screen Recording permission so it can access screen pixels and send them over USB. DisplayLink documents both extended and mirrored display configurations. Its support guidance also says to disable monitor MST for the DisplayLink implementation described there.

Which type works with your computer?

Windows and ChromeOS

An MST dock may be suitable if the specific computer supports DisplayPort video and MST. Verify the graphics hardware, the USB-C/USB4/Thunderbolt video path, the dock’s topology, and the monitor modes you need. Microsoft’s docking overview explains USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode in the context of docking; check the computer maker’s specifications for the actual model’s capabilities and external-display limits.

Mac

For multiple independent extended displays from one dock, Plugable’s MST compatibility guidance says macOS does not support MST for that purpose. An MST dock’s multiple outputs may mirror or otherwise fail to provide the independent screens you expect. DisplayLink can be an option if the Mac, operating system, and device are supported and you accept installing DisplayLink Manager and granting its required permission. Check DisplayLink’s macOS app scope and limitations and first-time configuration requirements.

When native display support is enough

If the computer’s built-in external-display limit already meets your needs, a monitor connected through a supported USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt path may avoid both an MST multi-stream split and USB graphics software. Native display support varies by computer model, so confirm its documented display limit rather than inferring it from the port shape or dock output count.

What to check before choosing a dock

  1. Identify the exact host and operating system. Look up the computer model, processor or GPU, USB-C video capability, MST support, and the manufacturer’s stated maximum for external displays.
  2. Decide whether you need extended or mirrored displays. Count independent desktops, not just the number of physical dock outputs.
  3. Verify the modes for all monitors at once. Check resolution and refresh rate for the output combination you plan to use; a daisy-chain configuration can reduce available modes.
  4. Check software and permissions. Confirm whether the dock uses DisplayLink, whether its software supports your operating system, and whether Screen Recording permission or managed-device approval is acceptable.
  5. Match the physical connections and power needs. Check monitor inputs, dock port layout, USB peripheral requirements, charging power, and cable capabilities. USB-C identifies a connector, not a guaranteed set of features.

For DisplayLink’s connection guidance, see how to connect a DisplayLink-enabled product to a USB-C host. For device-specific modes and the MST note, consult DisplayLink’s resolution support information.

Why a dock’s port count is not a compatibility guarantee

A dock with two video outputs does not necessarily provide two independent extended displays on every computer. The result depends on the host’s video path and display support, the dock’s design, the operating system, and the modes required by each monitor. With DisplayLink, check the device-specific supported modes and use the vendor’s configuration guidance, including DisplayLink’s Mac display configuration instructions. With MST, confirm the host and display support before relying on multi-stream or daisy-chain operation.
