Find the right USB-C charger wattage for your iPhone model. Apple’s wired fast-charge recommendations range from 20W to a specific 60W-capable AVS setup.

The right USB-C charger wattage depends on your iPhone model and whether you charge by cable or MagSafe. For wired fast charging, Apple specifies 20W or higher for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, 40W or higher for iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, and a compatible 60W-capable AVS adapter with a 60W-rated cable for the faster wired charging supported by iPhone 18 Pro models. Older iPhones have different requirements, so check the guidance for your exact model.

What wattage charger does your iPhone need?

These are Apple’s published wired fast-charge recommendations. They describe the adapter setup for Apple’s stated charging target, not the power your iPhone will draw continuously.

iPhone model Apple’s wired fast-charge guidance What to look for
iPhone 18 Pro models For faster charging, use a 60W-capable USB Power Delivery 3.2 adapter that supports AVS and a USB-C cable rated for at least 60W. Apple cites its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max or a comparable adapter. The stated target is up to 50% in around 15 minutes. Check for AVS support and the cable’s 60W rating; a charger marked 40W alone may not meet this setup.
iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max 40W or higher for up to 50% in around 20 minutes. Choose a USB-C adapter that meets Apple’s compatibility guidance and provides at least 40W.
iPhone 17e and iPhone Air 20W or higher for up to 50% in around 30 minutes. A compatible 20W USB-C adapter meets Apple’s listed target.
iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later, excluding the newer model-specific guidance above Apple’s adapter guide specifies at least 20W for iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later. Newer models have the separate recommendations shown above. Use the recommendation for your specific model, especially if it is a recent generation.
Earlier iPhone models Apple’s general fast-charge article lists an 18W-or-greater USB-C Power Delivery adapter for earlier models; the adapter guide specifies 20W for iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later. Because the guidance varies by generation, check Apple’s current page for your model rather than assuming one threshold applies to all older iPhones.

Apple’s “up to 50%” timings are estimates from tests using preproduction devices. Apple says results vary with the adapter, settings, usage and environmental conditions; they are not guaranteed charging times. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance and Apple’s iPhone power-adapter guide.

Is a 20W charger enough for an iPhone?

It meets Apple’s listed wired fast-charge threshold for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, and the adapter guide specifies at least 20W for iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later. It is not Apple’s stated fast-charge setup for iPhone 17, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, which calls for 40W or higher, or for the faster wired charging of iPhone 18 Pro models, which uses a 60W-capable AVS adapter and a cable rated for 60W or more.

A 20W adapter can still charge an iPhone whose faster-charge recommendation calls for more power; it simply does not match Apple’s stated setup for that faster target.

What charger do you need for MagSafe?

MagSafe uses a separate adapter recommendation from wired fast charging. Apple recommends a MagSafe Charger with a USB-C adapter rated 30W or higher (or a comparable USB Power Delivery adapter) for wireless fast charging on iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple lists up to 15W of MagSafe fast charging with a 20W-or-higher USB-C Power Delivery adapter.

Does a higher-wattage USB-C charger charge an iPhone faster?

Not automatically. The wattage printed on an adapter is its maximum available output under supported conditions, not a promise that the phone will receive that amount. The iPhone and adapter negotiate power, and the phone draws according to its charging design. Adapter protocol, cable capability, battery state, settings, use and temperature can also affect the result.

A higher-capacity compatible adapter is safe to use when it meets Apple’s compatibility recommendations: the iPhone draws the power it supports rather than being forced to take the adapter’s maximum. Apple says an iPad or Mac notebook USB power adapter can charge an iPhone, and specifically notes that a Mac USB-C adapter can be used for faster charging. For iPhone 15 and later, Apple says to use a cable and adapter compliant with the USB-C standard, including USB Power Delivery. The USB-C cable included with iPhone supports charging; its USB 2 data-speed limit is separate from its charging function. See Apple’s USB-C charging and connection guidance.

What to check before buying an iPhone USB-C charger

  • Exact iPhone model: Match the adapter to that model’s current Apple recommendation.
  • Charging method: Wired USB-C and MagSafe have different adapter thresholds.
  • Protocol as well as wattage: For faster wired charging on iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple specifies AVS support in a 60W-capable adapter, not just a headline wattage.
  • Cable rating: The iPhone 18 Pro faster-charge setup requires a USB-C cable rated for at least 60W. For other models, use a compatible cable and adapter.
  • Other devices: If one adapter will also serve a Mac or another device, a higher-capacity compatible adapter can be practical, but it does not raise the iPhone’s supported charging rate.

For the iPhone 17 series and Air, Apple’s adapter guide lists third-party adapter output specifications that include USB-C, 40W continuous sustained power, up to 60W maximum, and supported voltage/current profiles that include AVS options. Those details illustrate why the number on the label alone may not establish compatibility. Consult Apple’s adapter specifications and verify the actual adapter’s output profiles.

Why charging may take longer than expected

Fast charging can vary with the adapter, settings, usage and environment. Apple also warns that fast charging might not work when conditions are too cold or too hot. Its estimated charging times are therefore best treated as controlled-test benchmarks, not a guarantee for every session.
