Choose a USB-C cable with a built-in display for a convenient charging readout on the cable you are already using. Choose a separate inline USB-C power meter if you want to use one instrument across compatible setups or need a wider set of readings. Neither device, by itself, proves a cable’s advertised power or data capability.
What is the difference?
USB-C cable with a display
A display cable combines the cable and readout in one product. Ubiquiti’s USB-C Cable with Charge Display, for example, has a double-sided display and integrated power meter. Its product listing specifies up to 100 W output and 480 Mbps data transfer for the offered 0.3 m, 1 m and 2 m lengths. Those figures apply to that cable, not to display cables generally.

Standalone USB-C power meter
A standalone meter is a separate device inserted into a compatible charging path, such as between a charger and a device. DataPro’s USB-C power meter guide describes readings including voltage, current, direction of flow and accumulated current over time; watts can be calculated by multiplying voltage by current.
Feature sets and operating limits depend on the model. Adafruit’s USB-C Power Monitor / Analyzer listing, for instance, specifies voltage, amps, watts, peaks and accumulated Wh/mAh, with a 4.5–50 V working range and 0–6 A working current (12 A short-term peak). These are specifications for that product, not a baseline for all meters.

Which one should you use?
| Your need | Better fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A quick glance at charging while using one cable | Display cable | Whether its screen shows the values you need, plus its maximum power, data rate, length and connectors. Ubiquiti’s example lists up to 100 W and 480 Mbps. |
| One instrument for several compatible charging setups | Standalone meter | Connector compatibility, power and current range, data pass-through and protocol support required for your setup. |
| More detailed charging observations | Standalone meter, if its model supports them | Confirm the exact readings offered, such as voltage, current, direction, peaks or accumulated charge. Features vary by product. |
| Proof that a cable is certified or meets its claimed data capability | Neither by itself | Check the cable’s rating and compliance information; a displayed charging value does not establish certification or full cable performance. |
What to compare before buying
Readout and measurement purpose
Decide whether you need only an at-a-glance charging check or want measurements you can use across multiple compatible setups. Verify the exact display fields: a watts-only readout is different from voltage, current, flow direction, peak values or accumulated capacity.
Power and current limits
Match a meter’s documented working voltage and current range to the charger and device. Do not infer its limits—or a cable’s power rating—from the USB-C connector shape or the presence of a screen. A meter outside its specified range is not an appropriate choice for that setup.

- Measuring Data is Guaranteed: Power-off storage function that stores capacity and energy data when the mobile power is turned off, which is convenient for subsequent viewing and convenient for capacity energy measurement of mobile power.
Data and protocol pass-through
If the cable carries data or video, check its data capability separately from its charging readout. For a meter inserted in the path, confirm that it supports the data pass-through and charging protocols your setup requires. Product specifications differ; the available product examples do not establish universal pass-through support.

Cable ratings and markings
USB-IF’s Cables and Connectors guidance states, “All cables do not have the same capabilities.” Its compliance-program guidance describes USB-C-to-USB-C power markings of 60 W or 240 W and data-rate markings for cables other than USB 2.0 High-Speed models. These markings explain the program’s guidance; they do not prove that an unverified product listing meets USB-IF requirements.

Accuracy and where power is measured
If precision matters, look for model-specific accuracy information and details about the measurement path. The cited product pages do not provide a comparable accuracy test between display cables and standalone meters, or enough measurement-architecture detail to generalize where each design measures power.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can either device prove what a cable can do?
No. A reading can help you observe a charging condition, but it is not proof of USB-IF certification, cable data performance or compliance with a rating. Verify the specific cable’s power and data specifications and, where certification matters, its compliance credentials. A meter’s own limits and pass-through capabilities must also be checked against the intended setup.
