USB-C audio is not automatically better than 3.5 mm audio. USB-C can send digital sound to a DAC and amplifier in headphones or an adapter, giving manufacturers more freedom to choose the audio hardware. But the quality of the complete playback chain—not the connector—determines what you hear.
Do 3.5 mm or USB-C headphones provide better sound quality?
Neither connector guarantees better sound. A 3.5 mm headphone jack supplies an analog signal: the phone or other source has already converted digital audio to analog before it reaches the headphones. With USB-C, audio may travel as digital data to a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and amplifier in the headphones or an adapter. In supported implementations, USB-C can also carry analog audio, so the port alone does not reveal which signal path a product uses.

Android’s guidance describes the trade-off between putting the DAC inside the device or using an external design: an external design can be made for higher fidelity or power, but brings added cost and complexity, and may add latency. That is an option for product designers, not a promise that every USB-C accessory sounds better. See Android’s USB digital audio guidance.

What determines the sound you hear?
Compare the whole playback chain rather than the port label. The source, headphone drivers and tuning, DAC, amplifier, and the headphones’ power requirements all matter. A different DAC or amplifier may improve a particular setup, but there is no basis here for claiming a general sound-quality advantage across USB-C and 3.5 mm devices: no controlled head-to-head measurements across named phone and headphone models are available.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C plug and play: Connect to phones, tablets and laptops that support USB-C digital audio; ready for lessons and everyday listening without Bluetooth pairing or headphone charging
- Mic and in-line controls: Join online classes and work calls with the built-in microphone; adjust volume and manage music playback from the cord without reaching for your device
- Comfortable fit: Soft memory foam ear cushions, an adjustable headband and 90-degree rotating ear cups help you find a comfortable position for studying, working or listening
- 40 mm stereo drivers: Enjoy music, movies and spoken audio with stereo sound; the over-ear cushions provide passive sound isolation to help reduce surrounding distractions
- Foldable for travel: Fold the headphones for storage between classes or commutes; 1.2 m braided cord for everyday use, with headphones and user manual included; carrying bag not included
- Headphones: Their drivers and tuning shape the sound you hear.
- DAC and amplifier: Their design affects how digital audio becomes an analog signal and how it is driven.
- Power and headphone load: A setup may need more output power to suit particular headphones.
- Compatibility and features: The host and accessory must support the connection, microphone, and controls you need.
- Convenience: A wired adapter occupies the charging port unless the device offers another suitable connection.
- Cost and complexity: External audio hardware can add both, without guaranteeing a benefit you can hear.
How USB-C audio works—and why compatibility varies
USB-C is a connector, not one universal audio circuit. Digital USB audio sends data to a DAC in the connected accessory or adapter. A separate analog audio accessory mode is also possible when both the host and accessory support it; Texas Instruments’ explanation of USB Type-C audio describes this option. It does not establish how commonly current phones implement it, so check the documentation for your device rather than assuming that a USB-C audio connection is analog or digital.
For the USB-C-to-analog adapter path it describes, the Android Open Source Project specification allows digital-to-analog adapters and does not support analog-only adapters. It covers stereo analog devices both with and without microphones. That makes a passive cable a poor assumption: the phone and adapter must support a compatible signal path.

Can you keep using 3.5 mm headphones with a USB-C-only phone?
Usually, you can use a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that contains a DAC. Compatibility is device-specific, so check the phone maker’s guidance and confirm support for any microphone or controls you rely on.
- Samsung Galaxy: Samsung says newer Galaxy phones without a dedicated 3.5 mm socket need a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC, and advises checking that third-party adapters are DAC-compatible. See Samsung’s support guidance.
- USB-C iPad: Apple says USB-C iPads can connect USB-C wired headphones and identifies its USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter for other headphones or speakers. See Apple’s iPad connection guidance.
- Android devices: Android says compatible USB digital audio peripherals are routed automatically for playback and capture. Its guidance also advises device makers to document accessory features and power requirements and test interoperability. See Android’s USB digital audio documentation.
What to check before buying an adapter or USB-C headphones
- Look up the accessory requirements for your exact phone or tablet model.
- For 3.5 mm headphones, confirm the adapter includes a DAC if your device requires one; do not assume a passive USB-C cable will work.
- Check microphone and control support if you use calls, an inline microphone, or headphone buttons.
- For USB-C headphones, check host compatibility and the features you need. A direct connection does not by itself mean better sound.
- Consider whether using the USB-C port for audio leaves you without a convenient way to charge the device.
When a separate USB DAC or amplifier makes sense
A separate USB DAC/headphone amplifier is an optional tool, not a requirement for ordinary listening. It may be useful if a particular pair of headphones needs more output power than the built-in audio path provides, or if you have a specific reason to want a different audio stage. Weigh that possible benefit against extra cost and complexity; the presence of a DAC or USB-C plug alone is not evidence of a sonic upgrade.
