As of Oct. 3, 2026, Iran says it received US feedback on its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but reports do not show an agreed peace deal. Reuters identified the order and timing of steps as the main obstacle. Separately, the Associated Press reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s delegation to leave New York early, while another account said Araghchi was already expected to depart.
Did Iran receive a US response?
Iranian officials said Tehran received US feedback on the proposal through Qatari mediators in Doha on Sept. 29. That detail came from a non-Iranian official briefed on the talks, cited by Reuters in a report republished by Internazionale. On Sept. 30, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani told IRNA that Araghchi presented the American side’s proposal to President Masoud Pezeshkian at a Cabinet meeting. The Associated Press reported the Iranian statements.
The reports describe feedback relayed through mediators, not a public release of the US response. They do not establish that Washington accepted Iran’s terms.
What was in Iran’s seven-day proposal?
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if conditions were met. Iranian officials and reporting linked that offer to US steps including lifting the blockade of Iranian ports, releasing frozen Iranian assets, and waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales. The proposal was also connected to ending the wider conflict and resuming negotiations.

The full proposal text is not available in the cited reports, and these were Iran’s stated conditions—not mutually accepted provisions of a deal. The seven-day period is a proposed timeframe, not an agreed or completed deadline.
Why did Reuters identify sequencing as the sticking point?
The central unresolved question was which side would act first, and when. Reuters’ source described sequencing as the main sticking point, but the reporting does not publish the US response or establish an agreed order of steps.

That matters because the reported proposal links several issues: reopening Hormuz, the US port blockade, frozen assets and oil sanctions, as well as the wider conflict and renewed negotiations. The available accounts do not settle how those matters would be connected, how compliance would be verified, or whether any steps would happen simultaneously. Those implementation details remain unestablished in the reports.
Was Araghchi ordered to leave New York?
On Oct. 1, the AP reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Araghchi and the Iranian delegation to leave New York earlier than planned, citing two US officials familiar with the decision. The AP’s account makes this an attributed report, not a publicly documented order.

A Hindustan Times report relaying Axios said the talks had stalled and the delegation departed. It also noted that Araghchi reportedly had already been scheduled to leave by Monday night. The early-departure account should therefore be read alongside that caveat, rather than as proof that an agreed departure plan was abruptly cancelled.
How do the New York contacts relate to the Doha feedback?
The Iranian delegation was in New York around the 81st UN General Assembly, where indirect contacts were reported. Hindustan Times described Qatar and Pakistan as mediators in those New York contacts. The later feedback in Doha is a separate episode: Reuters’ account specifically attributed its transmission to Qatari mediation. The two locations and mediation accounts should not be conflated.

What is the status of a peace deal?
The reporting available by Oct. 3 describes a proposal, a US response conveyed through intermediaries, and continuing disagreement over sequencing—not an announced peace agreement or implementation of Iran’s offer. Pezeshkian said Iran would “make every effort to bring the agreement to fruition” while standing up for the rights of Iranians, and that “The agreement must now be based on a win-win strategy,” according to Hindustan Times. Those remarks express Iran’s position; they do not establish that the two governments concluded an agreement.
