In a July 2026 survey, 68% of U.S. adults said economic conditions had changed what they paid attention to in their mailbox, with deals, affordability and useful information among the main draws. That points to closer attention to relevant mail—not proof that households are saving money, abandoning digital channels or broadly returning to paper.
What the survey says about shopping and mail
Lob, a direct-mail company, commissioned an online survey with Kirin Analytics and PureSpectrum. It included 2,000 U.S. adults in July 2026 and is described by Lob as nationally representative across age, gender, income and region. The results are respondents’ reports of their attitudes and behavior, not observed purchases or evidence that mail caused a particular outcome.

- 84% said rising prices had changed how they shop. Lob says respondents described spending more carefully, delaying purchases, comparing options and seeking value.
- 68% said economic conditions had changed what they paid attention to in their mailbox. Lob identifies deals, affordability and useful information as central attention drivers.
- 66% said they like referring back to direct mail when considering a purchase. That is a stated preference, not proof that revisiting a piece saves money or leads to a purchase.
- 89% said relevant mail influences them to take action. Lob reports that relevance and response vary by generation.
Anonymous comments in the report illustrate the answers, but are not representative quotations: a Millennial man in the Northwest said, “I now immediately scan for tangible value”; a Gen X woman in the South said, “I pay attention to discounts, sales or special offers.”

The findings do not answer that question. Lob measured what respondents said they notice and do; it did not measure whether mail caused them to pay less, find a better deal or avoid an unnecessary purchase. Nor does the report establish that consumers are replacing online or other digital activity with mail.

The distinction matters: noticing an offer, keeping a mail piece for reference and reporting that mail influenced an action are different from demonstrating household savings. The survey also includes a prompt about why people delay purchases, but its published page text does not provide exact response values for those reasons.
Mail habits and digital follow-up
Lob’s respondents reported regular engagement with their mail: 82% said they collect it daily or nearly every day, and 87% said they read it the same day. Those figures describe survey responses, not independently observed household routines.

Mail and digital are not necessarily competing choices. In Lob’s survey, 79% said they had taken a digital action after receiving direct mail, and 65% said they had purchased, signed up or become a customer as a result. These self-reports point to cross-channel behavior; they do not establish that mail caused the digital action or purchase.
Separately, 34% said direct mail feels more trustworthy than digital communication—nine percentage points above the prior-year result reported by Lob. This is a change in survey responses, not independent evidence of a national shift in trust. Lob’s 2025 and 2026 reports each used 2,000 U.S. adult respondents, but changes should not be read as a causal trend unless the questions and methods are confirmed comparable. See Lob’s 2025 report and 2026 report.

How this fits the broader mail picture
The survey offers a narrow view of consumer attention to offers; postal data and industry analysis answer different questions. USPS says nearly 3 billion Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) pieces were sent in fiscal year 2025, generating $617,161,072 in revenue. USPS reported those figures on May 15, 2026. They measure use of a business mailing service, not consumer choices, response or savings. USPS explains EDDM’s service and provider resources on its EDDM page.
Longer-term advertising figures show why the survey should not be framed as a wholesale return to physical mail. The USPS Office of Inspector General reported in 2025 that direct mail’s share of total advertising media spending fell by roughly half between 2013 and 2023. The OIG cites digital diversion as one factor in mail-volume pressure and notes that digital campaigns may cost less, be easier to set up and offer more detailed analytics. That historical trend does not contradict a 2026 survey finding that some consumers pay closer attention to offers arriving by mail. See the OIG’s report on projected mail volume and future trends.

What official household mail data can—and cannot—confirm yet
USPS’s Household Mail Survey is a separate source. The Postal Service says it surveys approximately 5,200 households annually on a government fiscal-year basis, collecting a one-week account of mail sent and received alongside attitudes and demographic information. Its 2026 data collection is ongoing, and USPS schedules the report for March 2027. It therefore cannot yet confirm Lob’s reported 2026 consumer attitudes. Details are on the USPS Household Mail Survey page.

What businesses should take from the findings
For marketers, the results suggest that relevant, useful offers may earn attention when consumers are scrutinizing spending. They do not establish that direct mail is more cost-effective than digital for a particular campaign. A fair comparison would need to account for the cost per household reached, targeting precision, production and delivery lead time, attribution and measurement, and coordination with digital follow-up. The cited sources do not provide a head-to-head test of equivalent campaigns.

USPS describes Every Door Direct Mail as a service for businesses distributing mail to selected neighborhoods, with provider resources available through its service page. Its scale is evidence that businesses use the service, not that it will outperform digital advertising or reduce consumer costs.
