If it was installed with --user, the command’s scripts directory may instead be missing from PATH. The urlwatch 2.29 installation guide recommends installing with python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatch and verifying with urlwatch --version (urlwatch installation documentation).
Start by checking the Python and pip in this shell
Run these commands in the same terminal where urlwatch fails:

python --version
python -m pip --versionpython -m pip runs pip through the Python interpreter named by python. If you installed urlwatch through a different interpreter—such as python3, Windows’ py launcher, or a virtual environment—then this shell may be looking in a different environment (pip User Guide).
The urlwatch 2.29 dependency documentation requires Python 3.8 or newer (urlwatch dependencies). If your selected interpreter is older, use a supported Python installation and bind pip to that interpreter.

Install urlwatch into the intended environment
Choose the command that names the Python you intend to use, and run it in that environment:
- Linux or macOS:
python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatch, orpython3 -m pip install --upgrade urlwatchif that is the intended interpreter. - Windows:
py -m pip install --upgrade urlwatchis the packaging guide’s common launcher form. If you use a specific Python version, select it with the launcher as appropriate. - Virtual environment: activate the environment first, then run
python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatchand later invokeurlwatchwhile that same environment is active.
These examples follow urlwatch’s documented install command while making the interpreter choice explicit (urlwatch installation documentation). Avoid mixing a system Python install with a different virtual environment or Python launcher when you verify the result.

Verify that the command is available
- In the same activated environment and terminal, run
urlwatch --version. - If it prints a version number, the command is available. This is urlwatch’s documented verification step (urlwatch installation documentation).
- If the shell still cannot find the command, check whether you installed with
--userand follow the PATH steps below.
If you used --user, check the scripts directory
A user-level install places command-line scripts in a per-user binary or scripts directory. That directory varies by platform and interpreter, and it may not be included in the shell’s PATH. The Python Packaging User Guide documents this behavior and notes that user installs have no effect inside a virtual environment (Python Packaging User Guide).

- Ask the selected Python for its user base:
python -m site --user-base. - The user scripts directory is typically the reported base followed by
/bin. Use the output from your own interpreter rather than guessing a home-directory path. - Check whether that directory is in
PATH. If it is not, add the exact directory to your shell’s PATH configuration. - Open a new terminal and run
urlwatch --versionagain.
Windows
- Run
py -m site --user-sitewith the launcher and interpreter used for installation. - Take the resulting path and replace its final
site-packagescomponent withScripts, as described by the packaging guide. - Add that resulting directory to the user’s
PATHif it is absent, open a new terminal, and retryurlwatch --version.
When pip itself is unavailable
If the error says pip is missing rather than urlwatch, that is a separate problem. Python’s pip installation guide lists ensurepip as an option; run it through the interpreter you plan to use:

python -m ensurepip --upgradeThis installs pip into that selected Python environment; it does not by itself correct a mismatch between the environment where urlwatch was installed and the shell PATH (pip installation guide).
