For URL2PNG API v6, an authentication error usually calls for checking three things: the API key and secret from the same account, the token calculated from the exact encoded query string being sent, and (for an integrated app returning HTTP 401) the account’s URL2PNG portal permissions. URL2PNG documents the token as the MD5 hash of the entire query string followed directly by the secret key. Rebuild and compare the signed string before changing unrelated settings.
How URL2PNG v6 authentication works
A v6 request uses an API key, a token, and a target URL. The key is assigned to your account and URL2PNG says it begins with “P”; the secret is a separate credential. The token is request-specific: URL2PNG says to generate one for each unique request. Its Quickstart Guide defines the token as the MD5 hash of the entire query string concatenated with your secret key.

That makes request serialization part of authentication. If the parameters or their encoding differ between the string you hash and the query string you transmit, the token may not match the request. This follows from the documented formula; URL2PNG does not publish a full authentication-specific error-code table in the reviewed documentation.

- Verify the account credentials. Confirm that the API key and secret are both from the intended URL2PNG account. Keep the secret private; redact it from logs, screenshots, and support requests.
- Build the query string once. Use the same parameter values and URL-encoding method for signing and transmission. Encode the target URL and other values consistently; do not hash one representation and send another.
- Calculate the token from that exact string. Concatenate the complete query string directly with the secret, then take the lowercase hexadecimal MD5 digest. Do not add an extra separator unless the official implementation for your request format specifies one.
- Compare the signed and transmitted values. Check that no parameter was omitted, altered after signing, reordered or serialized differently. Parameter names, values, escaping, and spelling must be consistent.
- Check the v6 endpoint shape. The quickstart shows a path of the form
/v6/{apikey}/{token}/png/?{query_string}and also includes a shell example using a service-root form. Follow the current official sample for your language and endpoint rather than combining path formats. - For HTTP 401, check portal permissions. The D3 URL2PNG integration guide advises checking permission settings in the URL2PNG portal when its integration returns 401. This is D3’s integration guidance, not a URL2PNG-wide error-code specification. HTTP 401 generally indicates that a request lacks valid authentication credentials; see MDN’s HTTP 401 reference.
- If the request still fails, preserve evidence safely. Record the status, response body, and a redacted request URL, then contact URL2PNG support. Its legal page lists [email protected]. Never include the secret in an unredacted ticket or public issue.
Generate a v6 token in Python
URL2PNG’s official Python example builds an options dictionary, encodes the query with urllib.parse.urlencode, hashes the resulting query string plus the secret with MD5, and places the key and token in the request path. This compact example shows that signing sequence; match its endpoint and parameter names to the current v6 quickstart for the options you use.

URL2PNG says to generate a token for each unique request, so calculate it again when the query string changes.
