Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most small shops that mainly receive bank-account UPI payments, start with a merchant QR and no extra hardware. Add a soundbox only when staff regularly miss or cannot hear payment alerts. Choose a card POS terminal when customers actually need to pay by debit, credit or other cards. The right answer depends on your customers, counter workflow, settlement account and the provider’s complete fee schedule—not on a universal “cheapest” device.
Quick answer: match the device to the payment your customers request
| Setup | Best fit | What it adds | Main cost questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant UPI QR | A shop whose customers mostly pay from bank accounts through UPI | A printed or displayed QR for scanning; no separate confirmation device is required | Onboarding or QR-issuance fee, account or provider charges, GST, settlement and reconciliation features |
| QR plus soundbox | A busy counter where staff cannot reliably watch a phone or hear app notifications | Spoken confirmation of incoming transactions; it does not create a new payment rail by itself | Installation, monthly rental, GST, lock-in, connectivity, supported QR types, replacement and cancellation |
| Card POS machine | A shop where customers ask to pay by card or card acceptance is important to sales | Card acceptance through contactless, chip or magnetic-stripe methods, depending on the terminal | Setup and rental, transaction charges by card type, GST, settlement, minimums, chargebacks and termination |
A QR is the leanest UPI path to investigate first, but “QR” does not automatically mean zero total cost. A soundbox is a workflow aid, not a replacement for checking the transaction record. A POS terminal can broaden acceptance, but its economics are acquirer-specific and should be accepted only after you receive an itemized quote.

What a merchant UPI QR actually does
A merchant QR encodes the information needed for a customer’s UPI app to identify your business and initiate a payment. The customer scans it, verifies the merchant details shown in the payment screen, enters an amount when required, and authenticates in their banking or UPI app. The money is settled to the merchant account designated during onboarding.

A static QR can be reused for many transactions; the customer generally enters the amount. A dynamic QR can be generated for a particular bill, so the amount and order reference can be carried into the payment request. The exact options depend on the provider and the account configuration.

Questions to settle before accepting QR payments
- Where does the money settle? Confirm the exact bank or merchant account, settlement timing and whether weekends or holidays alter the schedule.
- What name does the customer see? Ask the provider to show the legal or trading name you expect. NPCI’s UPI FAQ search result says the payer sees merchant information on the QR payment page, so check the live display before putting the code on your counter.
- Which instruments are supported? Do not assume that every QR accepts every credit-linked or wallet-like instrument. Confirm the payment types and any instrument-specific charges in writing.
- How can you reconcile payments? Check whether the provider offers transaction history, downloadable statements, references or a dashboard that matches your cash register.
- What is charged besides MDR? Ask about onboarding, account maintenance, SMS or notification fees, device or replacement charges, GST and any minimum activity requirement.
Keep the QR physically protected. A sticker pasted over the original code can redirect customers to an impostor account. Replace damaged or faded prints and make sure the displayed merchant name matches your shop before accepting payment.
When a soundbox is worth adding
A soundbox links to your merchant payment setup and announces an incoming transaction aloud. It is useful when the cashier is serving several people, handling goods, standing away from the phone or working in a noisy environment where a visual notification can be missed. It does not, by itself, make a QR accept a payment type that the underlying merchant account does not support.
Benefits at the counter
- Immediate audio cue: Staff can hear a confirmation while weighing goods, packing an order or serving the next customer.
- Less phone handling: The cashier need not keep unlocking a phone just to look for each notification.
- Shared awareness: A small team can hear the same announcement instead of relying on one person’s handset.
Audio is not proof that an order is fully settled if the announcement is ambiguous or the device is offline. For high-value orders, unusual amounts or disputes, verify the transaction in the provider’s app or statement and match the reference to the sale.
Published example: Central Bank of India soundbox pricing
One official schedule illustrates why a soundbox quote must be read as a complete product, not a single headline price. The Central Bank of India lists ₹300 installation and monthly rental of ₹100 for a static-QR variant, ₹250 for a dynamic-QR variant and ₹500 for a tap-and-pay variant. Those amounts are exclusive of GST. The schedule also lists a three-month lock-in and says a depreciated device charge may apply when damage is attributable to the merchant.
| Documented variant | Installation | Monthly rental | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static QR soundbox | ₹300 | ₹100 | Central Bank of India schedule; GST extra |
| Dynamic QR soundbox | ₹300 | ₹250 | Central Bank of India schedule; GST extra |
| Tap-and-pay soundbox | ₹300 | ₹500 | Central Bank of India schedule; GST extra |
These are that bank’s published terms, not a market average or a promise that another provider will charge the same. Ask whether the rental continues during suspension, whether the device needs a separate data connection, which languages it speaks, how long the battery lasts, what happens after a missed announcement and how replacement or cancellation works.

When a card POS machine makes sense
A POS terminal is justified when card acceptance is a real customer or sales requirement. Examples include customers who routinely present debit or credit cards, corporate buyers whose expense policy requires cards, tourists who may not use an Indian bank-account UPI flow, or transactions where a card receipt is part of the customer’s process. If almost every buyer already pays by UPI and no one asks for cards, a POS can become an idle monthly cost.
Get a written, itemized POS quote
There is no single current national POS tariff established by the available official material. Charges vary by acquiring institution, card network, domestic or international card, debit or credit classification, contactless method and the merchant’s risk profile. Before signing, ask for these lines separately:
- One-time installation or activation fee.
- Monthly rental, minimum monthly billing or minimum transaction volume.
- Per-transaction charge by card type and payment method.
- GST and any other taxes.
- Settlement timing, settlement account and deductions shown on the settlement report.
- Connectivity or SIM charges, paper-roll charges and replacement fees.
- Chargeback handling, dispute fees and the period for retaining receipts or evidence.
- Contract term, early-termination fee and the process for returning the terminal.
- Support hours, outage escalation and a loaner or replacement policy.
Confirm that the terminal supports the networks and methods your customers use, including contactless and chip where relevant. Ask whether receipts can be printed, sent by SMS or email, or retrieved later. A terminal that accepts cards but settles slowly may be less useful than a slightly dearer option with predictable next-day settlement.
Fee and policy context in India
What the 8 August 2026 government statement says
A Ministry of Finance release posted on 8 August 2026 says consumers making UPI payments will not face transaction charges. It also says merchant MDR, “if introduced,” would be threshold-based rather than blanketly levied to all merchants, with a committee and legislative process described for any such change. That is a dated government statement, not a universal new merchant tariff currently payable by every shop.
The same release reports 2,366 crore UPI transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore in July 2026 and states: “The truth is simple: UPI is India’s own innovation, and the government remains committed to keeping it free for citizens while ensuring its sustainability for decades to come.” Treat the volume figure as the government’s reported national total for that month, not a forecast of your shop’s sales.

What one provider’s schedule shows
India Post Payments Bank’s merchant MDR schedule lists UPI at 0% for both “small merchants” and “other merchants.” It describes a small merchant as having turnover up to ₹20 lakh in the previous financial year and says GST is applicable on payment instruments. That schedule applies to its own offering; it does not establish that every provider has the same onboarding, account, rental or service charges.
Why older MDR figures can mislead
A 19 March 2025 government release describes a FY 2024–25 incentive scheme, covering 1 April 2024 through 31 March 2025, with an estimated outlay of ₹1,500 crore for low-value BHIM-UPI person-to-merchant transactions up to ₹2,000 for small merchants. Its background says UPI and RuPay debit-card MDR had been made zero from January 2020, while citing historical ceilings of up to 0.90% for debit cards and up to 0.30% for NPCI UPI P2M in the policy context. Those figures are historical policy references, not a current POS quote or a guarantee of what your provider deducts today.
The Department of Financial Services lists an FAQ titled “FAQs on Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on Select UPI (P2M) Transactions,” dated 15 September 2026. The detailed answers were not available in the accessible page result, so check the current official FAQ and your provider’s written terms before relying on any select-transaction rule.
A practical decision process for a small shop
- Record actual demand for two to four weeks. Mark each sale as UPI, card, cash or another method. Note customers who asked for a card but could not use one, and note whether staff missed payment alerts.
- Define the minimum workflow. If a QR on the counter lets staff confirm payments in the merchant app and reconcile them at closing, do not add hardware merely because it is available.
- Compare QR onboarding and settlement. Obtain the provider’s written charges, supported instruments, settlement account, settlement timing, transaction-history access and support process.
- Test the physical counter. Check whether the QR is visible from the queue, whether mobile data or Wi-Fi works where customers stand and whether glare, distance or crowding makes the code difficult to scan.
- Add a soundbox only for a measurable problem. If missed or hard-to-hear alerts cause repeated interruptions or disputes, compare soundbox variants and total recurring cost. If the phone is already audible and easy to check, rental may not improve the process.
- Request a POS quote when cards are demanded. Ask for card-type rates, settlement, rental, minimums, GST, connectivity, chargebacks and exit terms in one document. Compare the monthly cost with the card sales you would otherwise lose.
- Recheck terms before signing. Government policy and provider schedules can change. Save the version and date of the quote, and ask how future fee changes will be communicated.
Setup checklists
Merchant QR checklist
- Complete business and bank-account verification with the provider.
- Confirm the displayed merchant name and settlement account with a small test payment.
- Print or display the QR where it cannot be swapped or covered.
- Train every cashier to check amount, payer-facing merchant name and transaction reference.
- Set a closing routine that matches the provider statement to the till.
Soundbox checklist
- Confirm whether the device is for static QR, dynamic QR, tap-and-pay or a combination.
- Write down installation, rental, GST, lock-in, damage, replacement and cancellation terms.
- Test volume, language, battery, charging location and mobile connectivity at the busiest counter.
- Decide when staff must verify the app or statement instead of relying on audio alone.
- Keep the provider’s support number and device identifier with the daily cash-up records.
Card POS checklist
- List the card networks and methods your customers use most.
- Obtain an itemized quote, including transaction rates, rental, GST and minimums.
- Confirm settlement timing and how refunds, reversals and chargebacks appear.
- Test contactless and chip transactions, receipt delivery and end-of-day settlement reports.
- Document outage procedures: alternate payment method, manual contact details and support escalation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing on the advertised MDR alone
A 0% MDR line does not answer whether there is an account fee, rental, installation charge, GST, replacement cost or minimum activity requirement. Compare the complete monthly and per-transaction cost for your expected volume.
Assuming every QR accepts every payment
Merchant QR capabilities can differ by provider and instrument. Confirm whether customers can use the specific UPI-linked method they ask for, rather than inferring acceptance from the printed logo.

Treating a soundbox announcement as final proof
Noise, a wrong amount or a spoofed voice can create a dispute. For expensive orders, match the app or statement reference before handing over goods.
Signing a POS contract without an exit plan
Ask about lock-in, minimums, damaged-device charges and early termination before installation. A terminal that is rarely used can cost more through recurring rental than through transaction fees.
Ignoring reconciliation
Separate business and personal payment accounts where possible, record refunds promptly and reconcile the provider’s statement with the till every day. This catches duplicate entries, failed reversals and payments sent to the wrong account sooner.

Single-counter grocery or convenience shop
Start with a clearly displayed merchant QR if most customers already use UPI. A soundbox becomes reasonable when one cashier serves a queue and repeatedly has to stop to inspect a phone. A POS is optional until customers request cards often enough to justify its fixed and transaction costs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Busy food stall or takeaway counter
Fast audio confirmation can reduce the need to handle a phone while packing orders, but use a dynamic QR if the provider’s workflow reduces amount-entry mistakes. If office workers or travelers regularly present cards, obtain a POS quote alongside the QR rather than assuming one device must replace the other.

Repair shop or higher-value retailer
Use whichever methods customers demand, but make verification and reconciliation stricter. Confirm the amount and reference in the app or statement for every large payment, and read chargeback and refund terms before accepting cards.
Mobile or temporary stall
Prioritize portability, battery life and connectivity. A printed QR may be the simplest starting point; a soundbox is useful only if it remains connected and audible in the actual location. Ask whether the provider permits a change of address or settlement account when the stall moves.
Bottom line
Investigate a merchant UPI QR first when UPI covers your customers and you want the least hardware. Add a soundbox to solve a specific confirmation problem, after comparing installation, rental, GST, lock-in and support. Choose a card POS when card acceptance protects sales or serves a defined customer group, and insist on written total-cost and settlement terms. Recheck the provider schedule and official UPI policy at the time you sign, because neither a single bank’s 0% MDR listing nor a government statement about possible future rules establishes the price of every merchant setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a merchant UPI QR always free for a small shop?
No. One India Post Payments Bank schedule lists UPI MDR at 0% for both its small and other merchant categories, but that does not establish zero onboarding, account, rental, GST or other charges at every provider. Request the complete written schedule for the account you will use.
Does a soundbox replace a merchant QR?
No. A soundbox adds spoken confirmation to an underlying merchant payment setup. Confirm which QR types and payment instruments the particular device and account support.
Should a shop buy a POS machine just in case?
Usually not. Obtain a POS when customers actually request card payment or card acceptance is tied to your sales. Compare rental, transaction charges, settlement, minimums, GST and exit terms against the card sales you expect.
Are customers currently charged for UPI payments?
The Ministry of Finance statement posted 8 August 2026 says consumers making UPI payments will not face transaction charges. It leaves open the possibility of limited, threshold-based merchant MDR if introduced, so merchants should check current official and provider terms.
