If it is confirmed failed, raise a complaint in the app and with the bank linked to the debited account.
The formal reversal deadline depends on what you were paying for: the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sets a T+1-day deadline for certain failed UPI transfers and T+5 days for certain failed merchant payments. If the applicable deadline is missed, compensation of ₹100 per day may be due. Keep your transaction details and complaint reference so you can track the case.

First, check whether the payment is pending or failed
A debit alert alone does not tell you whether a UPI payment has finally failed. Open the transaction in your app’s history, refresh its status, and note the exact wording. A transaction marked pending may still complete: the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) says a transfer can reach the beneficiary within 48 hours when the beneficiary’s bank is delayed.
Before trying again, check with the recipient or merchant and recheck the transaction status. Sending a second payment while the first is pending could result in paying twice. If the app shows a successful payment but the other person says it has not arrived, treat it as a credit or confirmation dispute rather than assuming the payment failed. Ask the recipient to check their account or merchant records too; the debit notification on your phone does not, by itself, establish whether their side received the payment.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Once a payment has been initiated, NPCI says it cannot be stopped. That makes checking the original transaction before retrying especially important. If a second payment is needed after you have confirmed the first did not reach the recipient, keep the records for both attempts so you can distinguish them in any complaint.
What to record
- UPI transaction ID or RRN (reference number)
- Amount, date and time
- Recipient or merchant details
- The exact status shown in the app
- A screenshot of the transaction and any bank debit alert
Use the reference number for the specific transaction, not just the bank account debit entry. Record the name or UPI details of the payee or merchant and preserve any messages or confirmation screens that help show what happened. If you contact support, note when you did so and the complaint number you were given. These details help the app or bank locate the transaction and give you a record for follow-up.
NPCI advises contacting bank support if a failed-transaction refund has not arrived within one hour. That is practical support guidance, not a guarantee that every debit will be reversed within an hour; RBI’s formal deadlines for the covered failure types are longer and differ by transaction type. See the NPCI UPI FAQ.

Know the applicable reversal deadline
RBI’s turnaround-time framework distinguishes a UPI funds transfer from a merchant payment. Here, T means the transaction date. The framework described below applies to domestic transactions where both the originator and beneficiary are in India.
| Transaction situation | RBI reversal deadline | Delay compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Your account was debited for a UPI funds transfer, but the beneficiary was not credited | T+1 day, where the beneficiary credit cannot be made | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Your account was debited for a UPI merchant payment, but confirmation did not reach the merchant | T+5 days | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
These are not interchangeable windows: do not apply the merchant-payment T+5 deadline to a person-to-person transfer. For example, if you sent money to another person and their account was not credited, the specified funds-transfer timeline is T+1. If you paid a merchant, your account was debited, and confirmation did not reach the merchant location, the specified timeline is T+5. The transaction type matters even though both payments used UPI.
The table describes the reversal deadline for the stated failure scenarios, not a promise that all disputes will fit those categories. A payment marked successful, a payment still pending, and a merchant payment whose confirmation was delayed are not automatically the same case. First establish the status and type of transaction, then compare it with the relevant RBI category. The RBI circular sets out the timelines and compensation rules: RBI circular on harmonisation of turnaround time.

Compensation is relevant when the transaction fits the specified failure category and the reversal deadline is exceeded. RBI says applicable compensation should be credited automatically, without waiting for the customer to make a claim. If the deadline has passed and the credit has not appeared, include the compensation in your follow-up with the bank. The rate in the specified cases is ₹100 for each day of delay beyond the applicable deadline.

What to do, step by step
- Check the transaction record. In your UPI app, open transaction history, select the payment and refresh or check its status. Save the transaction ID or RRN, amount, date and time, payee or merchant, status and a screenshot. Use the app’s status rather than relying only on a debit alert.
- If it is pending, wait and verify before retrying. Contact the recipient or merchant to ask whether they received the payment, then check the status again. NPCI says a pending transfer may be credited within 48 hours if the beneficiary bank is delayed. Do not send another payment until you have checked the first one. If the recipient confirms receipt, retain that confirmation and avoid making a duplicate payment.
- Raise a complaint in the UPI app. Use the transaction’s dispute, help or complaint option, if available. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance says a complaint for a debit transaction may be raised after five minutes. App labels and complaint availability can vary. NPCI’s FAQ directs customers to the participating bank’s UPI app for grievance handling and transaction status. Include the transaction details and state clearly whether the app shows failed, pending or successful.
- Contact the bank linked to the debited account. Report the debit and provide the transaction details. Ask for a complaint or reference number, and keep the bank’s response. The bank connected to the debited account is an important complaint route even if you first started with a third-party UPI app. NPCI’s complaint portal can facilitate status checks and complaint forwarding to member institutions; the relevant member institution is responsible for resolving the complaint. Check the live portal for current eligibility and transaction-detail requirements: NPCI UPI complaint portal.
- Follow up after the applicable RBI deadline. If the reversal deadline has passed, ask the bank to reverse the amount and credit any compensation due under the RBI framework. Refer to your earlier complaint number and retain the follow-up record. Explain whether it was a funds transfer or merchant payment so the bank can assess the correct timeline.
- Escalate if the bank does not resolve it. If the regulated entity has not replied within 30 days of your complaint, or you are dissatisfied with its response, you can escalate through RBI’s Complaint Management System under the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026. The scheme took effect on July 1, 2026. Start at RBI Complaint Management System and review the RBI Ombudsman Scheme FAQ for the current process.
The 30 days refer to the time after you complained to the regulated entity, such as the bank—not 30 days after the UPI transaction. Keep the date you lodged the bank complaint and its reference number. If the bank has already replied but you are not satisfied, the scheme also allows escalation on that basis; you do not have to treat silence as the only reason to approach RBI.
If you did not authorize the payment, report it immediately
An authorized payment that failed technically is different from a transaction you did not make. If you suspect fraud, or see an unidentified or unauthorized debit, contact your bank immediately through its official channel. Do not wait for a normal failed-payment reversal window. NPCI’s complaint guidance directs customers to raise fraudulent, unidentified and unauthorized transactions with the respective bank. Make clear that you did not authorize the payment, rather than describing it only as a failed UPI transaction.

What the complaint route can—and cannot—do
Start with the UPI app and the bank that holds the debited account. The app can show status and offer a dispute option; the bank can investigate the debit and reversal. NPCI’s portal is a route for checking or forwarding complaints to member institutions, not a substitute for the member’s resolution responsibility. Keep the bank complaint number even if you also submit a complaint through an NPCI route.
NPCI’s complaint portal may ask for transaction and eligibility details, and those fields can change. Check the live portal rather than assuming every transaction can be filed there. A portal submission or status check does not remove the need to follow up with the member institution handling the complaint. Keep copies of what you submit and any response you receive.

Common mistakes that can delay resolution
- Paying again while the first transaction is pending: verify with the recipient and check the original status first. NPCI says a pending transfer may still reach the beneficiary within 48 hours.
- Using the wrong deadline: a qualifying funds-transfer case has a T+1 timeline; the merchant-confirmation case has a T+5 timeline. Identify which type of payment you made before deciding that a deadline has passed.
- Relying only on the one-hour guidance: contact the bank if the refund has not arrived within that period, but use the relevant RBI timeline to assess the formal reversal deadline. One hour is support advice, not a blanket reversal guarantee.
- Assuming every debit qualifies for automatic compensation: the ₹100-per-day rule applies to the specified failure categories after their respective deadlines. Ask the bank to assess the case against the applicable category.
- Closing the case without a reference number: record the complaint ID and retain screenshots and bank responses in case you need to follow up or escalate.
- Waiting to report a suspected unauthorized debit: report it to the bank immediately through an official channel; do not treat it as an ordinary technical failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a UPI refund take if the payment failed?
NPCI advises contacting your bank if a failed-transaction refund has not arrived within one hour, but that is not a guarantee that every debit will be reversed by then. Under RBI’s specified failure categories, a funds transfer where the beneficiary was not credited has a T+1-day reversal timeline; a merchant payment where confirmation did not reach the merchant has a T+5-day timeline.
My UPI payment is pending and money has been deducted. Should I pay again?
Not until you check the status and confirm with the recipient or merchant whether the first payment arrived. NPCI says a pending transfer may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours if the beneficiary bank is delayed. Once initiated, a payment cannot be stopped.
Where do I complain about a failed UPI transaction?
Start with the transaction’s help or dispute option in your UPI app and contact the bank linked to the debited account. Keep the transaction ID or RRN and ask for a complaint number. NPCI’s portal can facilitate status checks and forwarding, while the relevant member institution is responsible for resolving the complaint.
Can I get compensation for a delayed UPI reversal?
RBI specifies compensation of ₹100 per day beyond the deadline for the covered cases: T+1 for a qualifying funds transfer and T+5 for a qualifying merchant payment. Applicable compensation is to be credited automatically, but if the relevant deadline passes without reversal or compensation, follow up with the bank.
When can I take a UPI complaint to the RBI Ombudsman?
Under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, you can escalate through RBI’s Complaint Management System if the regulated entity has not replied within 30 days of your complaint or if you are dissatisfied with its response. Keep the original complaint date, reference and transaction details.
The Bottom Line
Check the final status before retrying, save the transaction ID or RRN, and report an unresolved debit through your UPI app and the bank linked to the account. Use T+1 for the specified failed funds-transfer case and T+5 for the specified merchant-confirmation case; if the appropriate deadline is missed, ask about the ₹100-per-day compensation. Report any unauthorized debit to your bank immediately.
