Replacing an HP desktop power supply is a model-specific fit decision, not a simple wattage upgrade. A higher-wattage unit can still be the wrong part if its case dimensions, motherboard connector, or GPU power leads do not match your computer. Start with your exact HP product number and the current PSU part number, then check the physical and electrical fit before you order anything.
Start with your exact HP model and PSU part number
A family name such as Pavilion, ENVY, or OMEN does not identify a replacement part. HP sells several chassis designs under each family, and the power supply inside can differ from one to the next.

- Record the full HP product number from the system label on the computer. Write it down exactly as printed.
- Look up the current PSU part number. If the rated output and HP spare part number are printed on the unit’s label, note them. Read the label from the outside only; do not open the PSU enclosure to find these numbers.
- Search HP’s parts store by product number. HP’s parts store offers product, part, and serial-number search, and it points to PartSurfer as its advanced part search. Compare the results against your product number, not just the product family.
- Check HP’s service documentation for your product. If HP lists a replacement for your exact model, that is the strongest confirmation available. If it lists none, treat any other unit as unverified until you have checked the points below.
A parts search tells you what HP associates with your product number. It does not confirm that a given part is in stock or will fit a particular computer, so the checks in the next section still apply.

Five checks decide whether a replacement will install and run safely. Wattage is only one of them.

- Physical dimensions and form factor. Measure the bay your current unit occupies and compare it with the replacement’s measured dimensions. Nominal ATX sizing is not enough if the case is non-standard.
- Motherboard power connector. Some HP boards use a standard 24-pin ATX connector. Others use a proprietary connector, so a standard ATX cable may not plug in at all.
- Auxiliary CPU connector. Confirm that the replacement provides the CPU power connector your board expects, and that the cable reaches it inside your case.
- GPU power leads. Confirm the connector type and number the graphics card requires, and whether the replacement supplies them. A PSU can have enough wattage and still lack the right connector.
- Whole-system power demand. Estimate the load from your actual CPU, GPU, and other components, not from the PSU’s label alone.
Two HP desktops, two different wiring approaches
HP’s own editorial guidance and its support community show why a blanket recommendation is unsafe. The two examples below are model-specific and should not be applied to other HP desktops.
OMEN 880-119na: a standard ATX path with checks still required
An accepted answer in HP’s Support Community describes the OMEN 880-119na as using a 500W ATX power supply. It describes an ATX replacement path, but that path still depends on dimensional and cable checks. A typical question from owners of this model reads: “What can I replace the power supply with that will fit with no problem in my desktop ?” That is an example of how owners phrase the question, not evidence of how often it is asked. The answer to it depends on measuring your own case and cable routing.

ENVY TE01-1144: a proprietary 4-pin motherboard connector
A separate accepted answer for the ENVY TE01-1144 says the motherboard uses a proprietary 4-pin motherboard power connector rather than a standard 24-pin ATX connector. The same answer lists possible HP part numbers for that case and recommends confirming fit with HP support before buying. For this model, a generic ATX unit is not a drop-in swap.
Sizing capacity: what HP’s reference figures show
HP’s OMEN upgrade article gives the following reference figures. They are examples for specific GPUs in HP’s own guidance, not requirements for every computer that uses those cards.

The same HP article lists a standard OMEN 25L power supply at 500W. Use that figure only for that chassis, and confirm it against your own product number.
For headroom, HP’s general OMEN hybrid-upgrade article suggests calculating total system needs and adding 20–30%. This is broad editorial guidance, not a specification for each HP model. As an illustration, a calculated load of 700W with 20–30% headroom points to a unit in the 840W to 910W range. The same article lists example tiers of 650W, 850W, and 1000W-plus. Those are broad system categories, not an HP-approved list of compatible power supplies.

Efficiency and performance: what can and cannot be claimed
A PSU matters to an upgrade when the existing unit cannot supply the load a new component needs. In that case, the replacement removes a power limit. It does not, by itself, make the computer faster. Any performance gain comes from the component the new supply makes possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe sources cited for this guide contain no independent or controlled measurement of electricity savings from a PSU swap, and they do not establish a general efficiency loss as a PSU ages. Treat claims about lower power bills or restored efficiency as unproven for your system.

- 【STRICT QUALITY INSPECTION】 The upgrade of the chip ensures safe power supply without damaging the battery, effectively protecting electric energy from over current, short circuit, releasing excessive stable voltage, and preventing overcharging.
Safety and service limits
- Disconnect the power cord before opening the computer. HP’s general servicing guide states: “Never open the cover while the power cord is attached. You might damage your computer or be injured by the spinning fan blades.”
- Do not repair the PSU fan yourself. HP Support’s fan-noise document states: “To avoid the risk of fire and electrical shock, do not try to replace the fan inside the power supply by yourself.” If fan noise persists, contact HP support.
- Follow your model’s own service guide. If you are unsure about connectors, physical fit, or handling, ask HP support or a qualified technician before you proceed.
Genuine HP part or third-party ATX unit
Choose the option that your product number supports. The table shows what each option has and has not been shown to provide.
| Option | Fit confirmation | Connector risk | Other checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genuine HP replacement identified through HP’s parts lookup | Listed by HP for the product number searched | Lowest, because the part is matched to the chassis | Stock and current price not verified; check availability separately |
| Third-party ATX unit | Not confirmed by HP unless HP documentation names it for your model | Higher on proprietary-connector models such as the ENVY TE01-1144 example | Measure dimensions, confirm GPU leads, and confirm rated capacity |
| Efficiency certification, warranty, noise level, and modular cabling | Not stated for the candidate models in the sources cited | Not applicable | Verify on the product listing of the exact model before buying |
Decision path
- If HP lists a replacement for your exact product number, buy that part first.
- If your motherboard uses a proprietary connector and HP does not confirm a replacement, contact HP support before purchase.
- If you are considering a standard ATX unit, buy it only after you have confirmed the case dimensions, the motherboard and auxiliary connectors, the GPU leads, and the rated capacity against your system’s measured load.
The upgrade is worth doing when the current supply cannot carry the load and a verified replacement fits. Wattage alone does not settle either question.
