Updated to iOS 18.5? Change These 6 iPhone Settings

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

iOS 18.5 may look familiar after installation, but an update can still change defaults, introduce new options, or make old settings worth revisiting. A quick pass through your iPhone’s privacy, security, battery, and notification controls can help you avoid unnecessary tracking, reduce interruptions, and keep the phone feeling smooth day to day.

The best settings to check are the ones that affect how often apps can reach you, what data they can access, how your iPhone protects your accounts, and how easily you can use common tools from the Lock Screen or Control Center. These six areas are worth reviewing right after updating so your iPhone works the way you want, not just the way it was left before the upgrade.

Check Privacy and App Tracking Permissions

After installing iOS 18.5, start with the privacy controls that decide how apps follow your activity and access personal data. Open Settings > Privacy & Security and spend a few minutes reviewing the permissions listed there. Updates can be a good time to catch apps that were granted access months ago but no longer need it, especially social media, shopping, travel, and free utility apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, check app tracking. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. If you want the strongest privacy setting, turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. With this disabled, apps cannot show the pop-up asking to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites, and existing tracking requests are limited. If you prefer to decide app by app, leave the main switch on and review the list below it. Turn off tracking for any app that does not clearly need cross-app activity data to function.

Samsung Galaxy A16 4G LTE (128GB + 4GB) International Model SM-A165F/DS Factory Unlocked, 6.7", Dual SIM, 50MP Triple Camera (Case Bundle), Black
  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.

Next, review sensitive permission categories under Privacy & Security, especially Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, and Camera. Tap each category to see which apps have access. For Photos, consider using Limited Access instead of allowing an app to see your entire library. For example, a printing app may only need the pictures you choose, not every image and video stored on your iPhone. For Contacts, remove access from apps that only needed it for a one-time friend-finding feature.

Permissions worth checking closely

  • Photos: Use limited access for apps that only need selected images.
  • Microphone and Camera: Keep access enabled only for apps you actively use for calls, recording, scanning, or posting.
  • Bluetooth: Disable it for apps that do not connect to accessories, speakers, trackers, or nearby devices.
  • Contacts: Remove access from games, shopping apps, and social apps if contact syncing is not needed.
  • Local Network: Allow only apps that connect to devices on your Wi-Fi network, such as smart home, printer, or media apps.

Also visit Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising. Turning off Personalized Ads reduces Apple’s use of your App Store, Apple News, and Stocks activity for ad targeting. This does not remove ads, but it can make them less tied to your behavior. While you are there, open Analytics & Improvements and disable sharing options you do not want, such as iPhone analytics or app developer analytics.

Finally, use the built-in privacy reports to spot unusual behavior. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. If it is not already enabled, turn it on and check back after a day or two. The report shows which apps accessed sensors, data, websites, and network domains. If a simple flashlight, wallpaper, or coupon app frequently reaches your location, contacts, or microphone, that is a strong sign to revoke permissions or delete the app entirely.

Review Location Services for Apps and System Features

After installing iOS 18.5, it is worth taking a fresh look at which apps can use your location and when. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. If Location Services is turned on, you will see a list of apps that have requested access, along with their current permission level. For most apps, While Using the App is the safest practical choice because it allows location access only when the app is open or actively in use.

Tap each app and check whether it really needs your precise location. Navigation, ride-hailing, weather, delivery, and fitness apps often work best with Precise Location enabled. Social media apps, shopping apps, photo editors, and many games usually do not need that level of detail. For those, consider turning off Precise Location while leaving a general location option enabled if the app still needs your city or region. If an app has no clear need for location data, set it to Never.

Recommended location settings to review

  • Maps and navigation apps: Use While Using the App with Precise Location on.
  • Weather apps: Use While Using the App or a widget-friendly option if available, with Precise Location only if you want hyperlocal forecasts.
  • Camera: Turn location access on only if you want photos and videos tagged with where they were taken.
  • Social media apps: Consider Never or While Using the App, and turn off Precise Location.
  • Retail, food, and rewards apps: Use While Using the App or Never unless store pickup, delivery, or nearby offers depend on it.

Next, scroll to the bottom of the Location Services screen and tap System Services. This area controls how iOS itself uses your location for features such as emergency calls, Find My iPhone, HomeKit, networking, location-based alerts, and significant places. Keep essential safety and device-recovery features enabled, especially Emergency Calls & SOS and Find My iPhone. If you use smart home automations, keep HomeKit enabled as well.

Some system location options are more about personalization and analytics than core functionality. You can usually disable items such as Location-Based Apple Ads, iPhone Analytics, and other analytics-related toggles without affecting everyday use. Also review Significant Locations, which lets your iPhone remember places you frequently visit to support personalized services. If you prefer to limit stored location history, open it with Face ID or your passcode and clear or disable it. These changes can reduce background location activity, improve privacy, and in some cases help battery life after the update.

Tune Notification Settings to Reduce Distractions

After installing iOS 18.5, it is worth taking a few minutes to clean up notifications. Apps often regain your attention slowly over time: shopping apps send sale alerts, games push reminders, news apps stack breaking stories, and social apps light up the Lock Screen all day. To review them, open Settings > Notifications. This screen shows every app that can send alerts, plus how those alerts appear on your iPhone.

Start with the apps that interrupt you most. Tap an app, then decide whether it deserves notification access at all. If it does not, turn off Allow Notifications. For apps you still need, reduce how aggressively they appear. You can disable Lock Screen alerts for apps that are useful but not urgent, turn off Banners for apps that break your focus, or remove Sounds so the notification arrives silently. For many apps, leaving only Notification Center enabled is a good compromise: the alert is available when you swipe down, but it does not demand attention the moment it arrives.

Use Scheduled Summary for lower-priority apps

If you want fewer interruptions without turning notifications off completely, go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled . Turn it on, choose delivery times, then add apps that can wait. This works well for retail, entertainment, newsletters, food delivery offers, and non-urgent social updates. Instead of arriving throughout the day, these alerts are grouped into a digest at the times you choose. Keep time-sensitive apps out of the summary, such as banking, calendar, ride-sharing, smart home security, medication reminders, and work communication apps you actively rely on.

Review previews, badges, and time-sensitive alerts

On the main Notifications page, tap Show Previews. For better privacy, choose When Unlocked so message content and app details are hidden until Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode unlocks the phone. This is especially useful if your iPhone sits on a desk, nightstand, or shared counter. You should also review badge counts app by app. In each app’s notification settings, turn off Badges for apps where the red number causes unnecessary checking, such as social media, shopping, or media apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some apps can send Time Sensitive Notifications, which may break through Focus modes and appear more prominently. In an app’s notification settings, leave this enabled only for services where timing truly matters. A delivery arriving at your door, a calendar event starting soon, or a security alert may qualify. A discount, content recommendation, or engagement prompt usually does not. If an app abuses this category, turn off its time-sensitive access or disable its notifications entirely.

  • Messages and Phone: keep alerts visible, but consider filtering unknown senders or using Focus modes.
  • Mail: enable alerts only for VIPs or key accounts if you receive a high volume of email.
  • News and social apps: remove sounds and banners, or move them into Scheduled Summary.
  • Finance and security apps: keep urgent alerts enabled, especially for transactions and account access.

Finally, check your Focus settings under Settings > Focus. Review modes like Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, and Sleep. Choose which people and apps can notify you during each mode, and set schedules if you want Focus to turn on automatically. A well-tuned notification setup makes iOS 18.5 feel calmer without causing you to miss alerts that genuinely need your attention.

Adjust Battery and Charging Options

After installing iOS 18.5, spend a few minutes checking your battery settings, especially if your iPhone feels warmer than usual, drains faster for a day or two, or charges differently overnight. Some temporary drain can happen after an update while iOS reindexes files, analyzes photos, and refreshes app data, but the settings below can help you spot real battery problems and make charging less stressful on the battery over time.

Open Settings > Battery and start with the Battery Usage charts. Switch between Last 24 Hours and Last 10 Days to see which apps are using the most power. Tap a bar in the chart to narrow the list to a specific time period, then look for apps showing heavy Background Activity or unexpectedly high usage. If an app you barely opened is near the top, consider changing its background behavior in Settings > General > Background App Refresh, or check the app’s own settings for sync, location, or upload options.

  • PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
  • BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.

Next, review Low Power Mode in Settings > Battery. Turning it on reduces background activity, mail fetching, some visual effects, and automatic downloads, which can be useful on long days away from a charger. If you use it often, add it to Control Center by going to Settings > Control Center and adding Low Power Mode. That makes it easier to toggle when your battery drops below 30% or before travel, without digging through Settings.

Check charging limits and battery health

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to review the long-term health of your iPhone’s battery. Look at Maximum Capacity and any service messages. A lower percentage does not automatically mean something is wrong, but if your iPhone shuts down early, charges inconsistently, or shows a service recommendation, it may be time to schedule a battery check with Apple or an authorized provider.

On supported models, check Charging Optimization or Charge Limit options in the same menu. Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and delays charging past 80% until you usually need the phone, which can reduce battery aging if you charge overnight. Newer iPhones may also let you set a fixed charge limit such as 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%. If you mostly work near a charger, a lower limit can help preserve battery health. If you travel frequently or need maximum runtime, choose 100% or disable the limit temporarily before a long day.

  • Use Optimized Battery Charging if you charge overnight and follow a regular schedule.
  • Use an 80–90% charge limit if your iPhone is often plugged in during the day.
  • Allow full charging before flights, road trips, events, or days with heavy camera and hotspot use.

If battery drain continues several days after updating to iOS 18.5, revisit the top apps in Settings > Battery, install any available app updates from the App Store, and restart your iPhone. Persistent heat, rapid drops while idle, or charging that pauses repeatedly with temperature warnings may point to a case, cable, power adapter, or battery issue rather than the update itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Face ID, Passcode, and Stolen Device Protection

After installing iOS 18.5, spend a few minutes reviewing the security settings that protect your iPhone if it is lost, stolen, or accessed by someone else. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, then enter your current passcode. This screen controls how you unlock your iPhone, what can be accessed while the device is locked, and whether extra protections are enabled for sensitive changes.

Start with Face ID. If unlocking has felt slower or less reliable after the update, tap Reset Face ID and set it up again in good lighting, holding the phone at the distance you normally use it. If you often wear glasses, a hat, or other regular accessories, use Set Up an Alternate Appearance if available. Also review the switches under Use Face ID For, including iPhone Unlock, iTunes & App Store, Wallet & Apple Pay, Password AutoFill, and any supported apps. Keep Face ID enabled for password autofill and payments if you want fewer passcode prompts without lowering security.

Next, check the passcode itself. In Settings > Face ID & Passcode, tap Change Passcode if your current code is short, reused, or easy to guess. A six-digit code is better than four digits, but an alphanumeric passcode is stronger if you are comfortable typing it. To choose a different format, tap Passcode Options during the change process and select Custom Alphanumeric Code or Custom Numeric Code. Avoid birthdays, repeated numbers, phone-number fragments, or anything someone could learn from your social media profiles.

While you are on this page, review what is allowed from the Lock Screen. Under Allow Access When Locked, consider turning off items such as Wallet, Reply with Message, Home Control, Accessories, and USB Accessories if you want a tighter setup. Leaving Notification Center or Control Center available can be convenient, but it may also expose information or give someone quick access to toggles before the phone is unlocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For stronger theft protection: open Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection and turn it on.
  • For stricter behavior everywhere: choose Always under Require Security Delay, if the option appears on your iPhone.
  • For a balanced setup: use the setting that requires delays only when you are away from familiar locations.

Stolen Device Protection adds friction when someone has your iPhone and knows your passcode. It can require Face ID or Touch ID for actions such as viewing saved passwords, using stored payment methods, or changing certain Apple Account settings. For especially sensitive changes, it may also add a security delay, making it harder for a thief to immediately lock you out of your account. If your iPhone is used for banking, work email, travel, or password storage, this is one of the most valuable settings to confirm after updating.

Customize Control Center and Lock Screen Shortcuts

After updating to iOS 18.5, it is worth checking the shortcuts you can reach without digging through the Settings app. Control Center and the Lock Screen are where many everyday actions happen: turning on the flashlight, starting a timer, scanning a QR code, enabling Low Power Mode, opening the camera, or toggling accessibility features. If these areas are cluttered with controls you rarely use, or missing the ones you need most, a quick cleanup can make your iPhone feel faster and more personal.

To edit Control Center, open Settings > Control Center. From here, review the controls currently included and remove anything you do not use often. Then add useful options such as Low Power Mode, Screen Recording, Shazam Music Recognition, Text Size, Hearing, Code Scanner, s, or Wallet. You can also open Control Center directly by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen, then press and hold or use the edit controls if your iPhone offers on-screen customization. Arrange the most-used buttons where your thumb naturally lands, especially on larger iPhone models.

  • Low Power Mode: helpful when you want a quick battery-saving toggle without opening Settings.
  • Screen Recording: useful for capturing app issues, tutorials, or short clips to share.
  • Text Size: lets you adjust readability quickly, including for supported individual apps.
  • Code Scanner: faster than opening Camera when you frequently scan QR codes.
  • Hearing: useful for Live Listen, background sounds, or headphone level checks if you use those features.

Next, review the Lock Screen shortcuts. Press and hold the Lock Screen, authenticate if prompted, tap Customize, then choose the Lock Screen. Tap the shortcut buttons at the bottom-left or bottom-right to replace the default options, such as Flashlight or Camera, with actions you use more often. Depending on your apps and setup, you may be able to add shortcuts for features like Calculator, Translate, Magnifier, Alarm, Home, or supported third-party app actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be selective with anything accessible from the Lock Screen. Shortcuts are convenient, but they can also expose actions to anyone holding your phone. If you keep smart home controls, Wallet access, or sensitive app actions on the Lock Screen, make sure they behave the way you expect while the iPhone is locked. You can review related access under Settings > Face ID & Passcode, then scroll to Allow Access When Locked. Turning off items you do not need from the locked state can improve privacy while still leaving your most practical shortcuts within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will iOS 18.5 reset my privacy or location settings?

Major iOS updates usually preserve your existing privacy settings, but it is still worth reviewing them because apps may request new permissions after the update. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security to check App Tracking, Location Services, Photos, Microphone, Camera, and Bluetooth access. If an app does not need a permission for daily use, change it to a more limited option or turn it off.

Which Location Services settings should I change after updating?

Start with Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and review apps set to Always. For most apps, While Using the App is enough, and you can turn off Precise Location for apps that only need a general area, such as weather or shopping apps. Also check System Services at the bottom of the Location Services page, especially options tied to location-based suggestions, alerts, and analytics.

Can changing notification settings really improve battery life?

Yes, especially if you have many apps sending frequent alerts that wake the screen, use sounds, or update constantly in the background. Go to Settings > Notifications and turn off alerts for apps you do not need, or move less urgent apps to Scheduled . Reducing Lock Screen notifications can also make your iPhone feel less distracting throughout the day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What battery settings should I check after installing iOS 18.5?

Open Settings > Battery to review Battery Health, charging behavior, and which apps are using the most power. If your iPhone supports it, check the charging limit options under Battery Health & Charging and consider using Optimized Battery Charging or a charge limit to reduce long-term battery wear. You can also look for apps with unusual background activity and adjust their notification or background refresh settings.

Should I update Face ID and Stolen Device Protection after an iOS update?

Yes, it is a good time to review both under Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Make sure your passcode is strong, add an alternate appearance if Face ID has become less reliable, and confirm Stolen Device Protection is turned on for extra security away from familiar locations. These settings help protect saved passwords, payment methods, and Apple Account changes if your iPhone is stolen.

Bottom Line

After updating to iOS 18.5, taking a few minutes to review key settings can make your iPhone feel more secure, less distracting, and better tuned to how you actually use it. Privacy permissions, battery options, notifications, security features, and everyday controls are all worth checking before you settle back into your routine.

Start with the settings that affect you most—like app permissions, notification noise, or battery drain—then work through the rest when you have time. A quick post-update tune-up now can prevent annoyances later and help you get the most from iOS 18.5.
