Android Auto for a car display is built into compatible Android phones, so you usually do not need to install a separate app. If setup asks for an update, follow the prompt. For routine maintenance, check Google Play for app updates and your phone’s Settings for Android system updates—these are separate processes. Before troubleshooting, confirm that your phone and exact car or stereo support the connection method you want.

What “updating Android Auto” means

Google describes Android Auto as built into compatible phones for use on a car display. If you cannot find a standalone Android Auto app, that does not necessarily mean it is missing. During setup, your phone may prompt you to update Android Auto; follow the on-screen instructions to continue. For routine maintenance, check for app updates in Google Play and Android system updates in Settings.

Check app updates in Google Play

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Choose Manage apps & device, then inspect Updates available.
  3. Update the relevant app or choose Update all. You can manage automatic updates in Play Store settings and network preferences.

Some updates may require you to accept permissions or restart the phone. Menu labels can vary by software version.

Check for an Android system update

  1. Open Settings and look under About phone or About tablet for the Android version and update information.
  2. In Settings, look for System > Software update or a similarly named option, then follow the displayed steps.

Google notes that older devices may not support newer Android versions, and update timing varies by manufacturer and carrier. An unavailable system update does not by itself indicate an Android Auto fault. See Google’s instructions for checking and updating your Android version.

Check phone and vehicle compatibility before setup

Android Auto requires a compatible phone and a compatible car or stereo. A USB port alone does not mean a vehicle supports Android Auto. Google’s current Android Auto compatibility and requirements page lists the supported connection requirements; check it before relying on version thresholds, which may change.

  • Wired connection: Google lists Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, a compatible car or stereo, and a high-quality USB cable as requirements.
  • Wireless connection: Google lists Android 11 or later generally, with specified Google and Samsung exceptions, a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and a compatible car or stereo.

For a particular vehicle, confirm support for the exact model and trim with its manufacturer. A stereo’s compatibility can also depend on the specific receiver.

Set up Android Auto while parked

Connect with USB

  1. Put the vehicle in Park and turn on its infotainment system.
  2. Connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port with a cable that supports data transfer.
  3. Follow the prompts on the phone and car display.

Connect wirelessly

  1. Confirm that both the phone and car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
  2. Pair the phone and car over Bluetooth for the first connection, following the vehicle maker’s instructions for its pairing controls.
  3. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup, then follow the on-screen prompts.

Complete setup before driving. Google advises drivers to pay attention to the road and driving conditions and obey applicable laws. See Google’s Android Auto setup steps.

Fix an Android Auto connection that stopped working

1. Recheck compatibility

Verify Android Auto support for the exact car or stereo and confirm the phone’s Android version meets the current requirements. If the vehicle’s support is unclear, ask its manufacturer rather than assuming its USB port is compatible.

  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching

2. Check the USB cable and ports

For a wired connection, Google recommends a high-quality cable shorter than one metre where possible and advises against USB hubs and extensions. Check that the cable fits both ports and supports data, then try another compatible cable. Google says replacing the cable will likely fix a previously working wired connection that has stopped connecting. These are troubleshooting recommendations, not a guarantee that the cable is the cause.

3. Check the car’s infotainment settings

Make sure Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings, then restart the infotainment system. If you use an aftermarket Pioneer or Kenwood receiver, check its maker’s website for firmware updates. Google’s Android Auto connection troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.

4. Revisit wireless pairing

For wireless setup, confirm that the first Bluetooth pairing completed and that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are on during setup. If connection still fails, follow the vehicle maker’s pairing instructions and verify that wireless projection is supported by both devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check phone software separately

If the phone is out of date, check Google Play app updates and Android system updates using the steps above. Settings paths vary by manufacturer. Avoid jumping straight to clearing Google Play services data or factory-resetting the phone: Google’s Android Auto setup guidance does not require those destructive steps as a first response.

Choose wired or wireless based on your setup

Connection What setup involves What to check
Wired Connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port with a data-capable cable. Confirm the car supports Android Auto; check cable length, data capability, and port fit. Avoid hubs and extensions.
Wireless Pair the phone and car over Bluetooth for the first connection; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup. Confirm wireless support for the exact phone and car or stereo, including the phone’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability.

The right choice depends on device compatibility and whether you prefer a cable-free setup or a direct wired connection. The cited guidance does not establish comparative battery life, sound quality, or reliability figures.

Use compatible apps and navigation features

Android Auto supports compatible apps for navigation, messaging, music, news, and other uses. Google’s navigation help describes voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance through Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. You may need to be parked to type a destination on the car display. Available apps and features vary by phone, region, car, and app; consult Google’s Android Auto navigation guidance for current details.

Google’s help pages also describe a transition from Google Assistant to Gemini on many mobile devices during 2026. Availability and supported commands can change, so check Google’s current instructions for your device rather than assuming that every voice feature is available in Android Auto.

Should you join the Android Auto beta?

Google offers an optional Android Auto beta for early access to features and updates. Beta software may be less stable, and some features may not work properly; Google also asks testers to provide feedback. Use the Android Auto beta enrollment information if you are comfortable with those trade-offs. Beta enrollment is not required for ordinary updates or setup.
