If you’re considering an UpCloud alternative, start with your workload rather than a provider ranking. DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode), Scaleway, OVHcloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud are all candidates—but they differ in regions, services, pricing, and how much infrastructure you manage yourself. No current, like-for-like benchmark establishes one as the best replacement for UpCloud.
What to compare before choosing an UpCloud alternative
UpCloud describes its platform as offering cloud compute, servers, databases, storage, and Kubernetes. Its homepage also advertises server deployment in under 45 seconds, API access, flat-rate pricing, and a 99.999% uptime SLA across 15 data centres. Those are UpCloud’s own published claims, not an independently verified comparison; check the current SLA terms and service scope before using them as a benchmark. UpCloud
For a fair comparison, define the deployment you need and compare providers against the same requirements:
- Locations and residency: Identify required regions, user latency needs, and any contractual data-location requirements. European data centres or sovereignty-focused marketing do not, by themselves, establish legal compliance for your workload.
- Total monthly cost: Match vCPU, RAM, and storage, then account for included transfer, egress, backups or snapshots, public IPs, support, taxes, and commitment discounts. An entry-level VM price is not a matched quote.
- Compute and storage: Compare the relevant performance class and persistent storage options. Without current, reproducible benchmarks, provider descriptions do not establish which will perform better for your application.
- Managed services: Check availability and pricing for databases, Kubernetes, load balancing, object storage, and application platforms. Managed services can reduce operational work, but offerings are not interchangeable.
- Reliability and recovery: Read each SLA’s definitions, exclusions, and remedies. Separately evaluate support response, backups, and disaster recovery; an SLA is not a measurement of observed uptime.
- Operational fit: Consider APIs, infrastructure-as-code support, control-panel workflows, team experience, migration effort, and dependence on provider-specific services.
- Compliance and support: Verify current certifications, contractual terms, regional availability, and the support tier needed for your particular workload.
DigitalOcean’s provider-published comparison guidance also emphasizes scalability, reliability, total cost of ownership—including egress—SLAs, support, and provider profile. It is useful as a checklist, but not an independent provider evaluation. DigitalOcean’s Hetzner alternatives guide

10 providers to consider
These are shortlist candidates, not a ranked list or a claim that each is a one-for-one UpCloud replacement. Select by the services and regions your workload actually needs.
1. DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean’s comparison material describes a developer-focused catalog including Droplets, managed databases, Kubernetes, App Platform, storage, and GPU offerings. Its AWS-alternatives article listed Droplets from $4 per month for a 512 MiB RAM, one-vCPU, 10 GiB SSD configuration. That is a dated, provider-published example—not a current matched quote—and the article says prices and features can vary by region and workload. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide
Rank #2
2. Vultr
Comparison material describes Vultr offerings in cloud compute, bare metal, and GPU infrastructure. The same DigitalOcean article listed an example entry VM at $5 per month with 1 GB RAM and one vCPU. Confirm the live plan, location, included transfer, and additional charges before comparing it with an UpCloud configuration. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide
3. Hetzner
Provider comparisons position Hetzner as a cost-conscious, self-managed compute option with European and North American offerings. DigitalOcean’s article gave a $4.09-per-month CX23 shared-vCPU example; verify current availability, region, setup charges, and traffic allowance. The figure alone does not establish that Hetzner will cost less for your workload. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide

4. Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode)
Comparison material lists virtual machines, Kubernetes, managed databases, and Akamai network integration. A $5-per-month Nanode starting figure appears in the cited provider comparison, but it is an indicative configuration, not a current quote matched to your needs. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide
5. Scaleway
Scaleway appears in comparisons as a European option, with compute, bare metal, and GPU offerings. Check the provider’s current regions and service catalog against your location and workload requirements; the comparison material does not establish a like-for-like price or performance advantage over UpCloud. Rank #4
6. OVHcloud
OVHcloud’s listed product areas include public cloud, dedicated servers, and private cloud. That breadth may matter if your deployment needs more than virtual machines, but the right comparison depends on the specific product, region, and operating model. DigitalOcean’s Hetzner alternatives guide
7. Amazon Web Services (AWS)
AWS is a candidate when a workload needs a broad service catalog or integration with an existing AWS environment. The comparison sources describe its breadth; that does not mean every service is necessary or that its total cost will be lower. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide

8. Google Cloud
Google Cloud is described in the comparisons as a possible fit for workloads emphasizing data, analytics, and AI tooling. Validate the exact services, regions, pricing, and integration requirements involved rather than relying on a broad “best for” label. Akamai’s Linode alternatives guide
9. Microsoft Azure
Azure is included as an option where Microsoft ecosystem integration matters. The comparison’s use-case description is an editorial characterization, not an independent evaluation; check the services and contractual terms relevant to your deployment. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide
10. Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, or Alibaba Cloud
These providers also appear in the comparison landscape, but they address distinct needs rather than forming one interchangeable option. The source comparisons associate Oracle Cloud with Oracle-centric or hybrid needs, IBM Cloud with regulated or hybrid needs, and Alibaba Cloud with Asia-Pacific or China-related needs. Treat those as starting points for investigation: confirm regional availability, applicable legal requirements, product fit, and current pricing with the provider. Published entry prices are configuration-specific and change over time. DigitalOcean’s provider-published comparison lists example starting figures of $4 per month for DigitalOcean Droplets, $5 for Vultr compute, $4.09 for a Hetzner CX23 shared-vCPU plan, and $5 for Linode/Akamai. These figures come from that article’s context and may vary by region and workload; they are not evidence of a cheapest-provider ranking. DigitalOcean’s AWS alternatives guide

To estimate your own cost, use the providers’ current official calculators or price pages and model the same monthly workload. Include transfer and egress, storage, backups, public IPs, support, taxes, and any discounts or commitments. Quick Recap
A practical way to narrow the shortlist
- Write down the deployment: Record required regions, expected traffic and data transfer, vCPU, RAM, persistent storage, managed services, recovery needs, and support expectations.
- Remove location mismatches: Confirm the actual service and feature availability in each required region, along with any contractual data-location conditions.
- Build comparable cost estimates: Price the same configuration and expected usage, including ancillary charges. Recheck commercial figures immediately before committing.
- Separate managed from self-managed options: Decide which operational tasks your team wants the provider to handle and compare those exact services and their costs.
- Plan reliability and migration: Review SLA scope and exclusions, test backups and recovery, and estimate the engineering work and provider-specific dependencies involved in moving.
- Verify the final candidates: Confirm certifications, terms, support coverage, and service limits with the provider for the region and workload you intend to run.
