Unusual Windows 10 Behavior? How to Check for Malware and Respond Safely

Slowdowns, pop-ups, redirects, and crashes can have causes besides malware. Use a careful Windows 10 triage process, protect exposed accounts, and plan for support ending.

Unusual behavior on a Windows 10 PC can be a malware warning, but it is not proof: a failing drive, bad driver, Windows problem, recent update, or unwanted-but-not-malicious app can cause similar symptoms. Look for several independent signs together, scan in stages, and protect accounts from a separate trusted device if credentials may be exposed. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so ordinary installations no longer receive routine security fixes; Microsoft says eligible consumers can use Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support guidance explains the available options.

Which signs make malware more likely?

One symptom—such as a slow PC, high disk activity, a crash, or a pop-up—has many possible causes. Concern rises when unrelated changes appear together, recur after a restart, or persist after removing a recently installed app.

  • Browser changes: search engine, homepage, extensions, proxy, or DNS settings change without your permission; redirects continue across sites.
  • Security changes: Windows Security will not open, protection is disabled or keeps switching off, or the same detection returns after removal.
  • Unfamiliar activity: unknown programs, scheduled tasks, administrator accounts, or remote-access tools appear or launch at sign-in.
  • Files or network: files are encrypted, renamed, or inaccessible, or the PC makes unexplained connections or sends unusual amounts of data.
  • Persistent interruptions: pop-ups continue outside the browser, or a removed file or process returns.

Potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) complicate the picture. They may show ads, slow a PC, install extra software, or behave intrusively without meeting the stricter definition of malware. Microsoft explains how potentially unwanted software differs and how Windows handles it.

An unfamiliar process or startup entry is not a diagnosis, and “rootkit” should not be inferred from a strange filename or high CPU use. Microsoft describes layered boot protections, including Secure Boot and Trusted Boot, but their availability and effect depend on system configuration; they reduce some risks, not all of them. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 boot-process guidance.

What should you do first if compromise is plausible?

  1. Contain the PC: turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet if there are signs of active compromise. Stop entering passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information on that computer.
  2. Preserve useful details: note what changed and when; record alert names, filenames, paths, and timestamps. Avoid reopening suspicious files or deleting everything before recording what you saw.
  3. Back up selectively: if you need to preserve irreplaceable files, favor documents and photos over installers, scripts, executable files, and unknown archives. Do not restore a backup created after the suspicious behavior began until it has been scanned and its history is understood. Microsoft recommends using a backup from before infection when possible; see its malware detection and removal guidance.
  4. Escalate serious cases: if files are being encrypted, data may be stolen, or a work device is affected, seek professional IT or security help before making extensive changes.

How do you scan with Windows Security?

In Windows 10, open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection. Labels can vary by build, language, edition, and whether another antivirus product is installed.

  1. Select Protection updates and check for updates.
  2. Review whether real-time protection is enabled, and check cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission. Another antivirus may be the primary protection provider.
  3. Run a Full scan. It can take considerable time, particularly on a large drive or when archives are present. Scanning after a restart and before opening other apps may reduce interference and resource contention.
  4. Review Protection history and follow Windows Security’s recommendation for confirmed detections. Restart and scan again if a threat returns.

If Windows Security will not open, closes immediately, or settings revert after you change them, treat that as a stronger warning—not conclusive proof of malware. Corruption or policy restrictions can also interfere. Do not download a random “cleaner” or disable protection to work around the problem; seek trusted technical help if you cannot restore access.

When to run Microsoft Defender Offline

Use the Offline scan if a threat returns after reboot, a process cannot be removed while Windows is running, or a normal scan finds something it cannot clean. Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Windows Defender Offline scan → Scan now. Save your work first: the PC restarts into a recovery environment to scan outside the normal Windows session, then restarts again. Check Windows Security → Protection history for results. Microsoft documents the Offline scan and threat-protection options.

A clean Offline scan lowers the likelihood of a common persistent infection; it cannot prove the PC is safe in every possible sense. Microsoft’s additional guidance covers recurring detections and scan problems.

How can you investigate browser and startup changes?

Check recent software and browser settings

Review recently installed apps and browser extensions, especially anything added shortly before the behavior began. Remove extensions you recognize as unwanted, check notification permissions, and inspect proxy or DNS settings if searches redirect. A browser problem limited to one browser points toward its extensions or settings, though it does not rule out a broader issue.

Review ordinary startup apps

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Startup and note unfamiliar entries. Do not disable or delete an item solely because its name is unfamiliar: drivers, hardware utilities, accessibility tools, updaters, and security products may be legitimate.

Use Autoruns only if you can assess its entries

Microsoft’s free Sysinternals Autoruns utility shows many auto-start locations, including startup folders, registry Run keys, services, scheduled tasks, drivers, Explorer extensions, Winlogon, and WMI entries. It is more comprehensive than Task Manager, but easier to misuse.

  1. Download Autoruns only from Microsoft Sysinternals and run it as administrator.
  2. Choose Options → Hide Microsoft Entries; verifying signatures can also help focus the review.
  3. Inspect entries with an unknown publisher, missing file, recent timestamp, random-looking name, unusual file location, or invalid signature. None of these clues alone confirms malware.
  4. Research the exact file path and publisher before acting. If you need to test an entry, uncheck it to disable it temporarily rather than deleting it.
  5. Restart and observe. Re-enable the entry if it proves legitimate or disabling it causes a problem.

What can symptoms tell you—and what else should you check?

Symptom Could be malware? Other possibilities and useful checks
Slow startup Possible, not diagnostic Too many startup apps, a failing drive, updates, or low storage; inspect Task Manager and drive health.
High CPU use Possible Browser tabs, indexing, updates, a driver, or a runaway app; check the process name and file path.
High disk use Possible Search indexing, Windows Update, paging, or a failing disk; inspect disk health, Event Viewer, and process activity.
Pop-ups Possible Browser notifications, adware, a malicious extension, or a rogue website; inspect extensions and notification permissions.
Browser redirects Possible An extension, proxy or DNS change, sync issue, or ad-supported software; check browser settings and extensions.
Blue screens Sometimes Driver, memory, storage, overheating, or Windows corruption; check the crash code and hardware.
Changed settings Possible Group policy, an update, sync, accidental changes, or an OEM utility; review recent software and account activity.
Encrypted or inaccessible files Serious warning Ransomware is possible; disconnect the PC and seek expert help before extensive changes.
Defender alert returns Possible Reinfection from the same download, email, or website; a persistent threat, bundled PUA, or false positive are also possible. Review the file path and run an Offline scan.
Unknown process Not necessarily A legitimate updater, driver, or OEM tool; check its publisher, signature, and path.

For troubleshooting, write down what changed, when it started, whether it followed a download, attachment, extension, driver, or Windows update, whether it affects one app or Windows generally, and whether it recurs after a restart. In Task Manager, inspect CPU, memory, disk, and network use. Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer can reveal repeated application, driver, disk, or service failures. Check Device Manager, Windows Update history, free storage, and drive health—especially if the drive reports errors or makes clicking sounds.

To repair Windows component corruption, open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. These repair Windows files and components; they are not malware scans. If active compromise is plausible, contain the PC and scan before relying on repair commands.

Would Safe Mode help?

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the problem disappears, a third-party startup app, driver, service, or shell extension may be involved; that result does not prove malware is responsible. Microsoft explains Safe Mode’s use for troubleshooting startup programs, services, and drivers.

To enter it, use Shift + Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode. You can use it to uninstall recently added software, remove a known unwanted extension, disable a suspicious startup item, or run a second-opinion scanner. Avoid Safe Mode with Networking unless internet access is necessary; keep a suspected infection isolated where practical.

  1. Change the password for your email or Microsoft account first.
  2. Change passwords for banking, shopping, work, cloud storage, and password-manager accounts.
  3. Enable multifactor authentication, review recent sign-ins and active sessions, and check recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and app authorizations.
  4. Contact financial institutions promptly if payment details may have been exposed.

Changing passwords on a compromised PC could expose the new credentials too.

When should you reset or reinstall Windows?

Consider Reset this PC or a clean Windows installation if detections keep returning after scans, security tools cannot be trusted, a rootkit, bootkit, ransomware, or unauthorized remote access is suspected, or unexplained system changes persist after removing third-party software. A professional can help when the device holds sensitive data or the consequences of a mistaken cleanup are high.

  • Back up only necessary personal files; avoid carrying over unknown programs, scripts, installers, or suspicious archives.
  • Confirm backups are not encrypted or infected and, where possible, prefer a backup from before the suspected incident.
  • Record product keys, recovery codes, account details, and applications you will need to reinstall. Secure accounts from another device first.

System Restore is not a dependable malware-removal method: it returns monitored system state to an earlier restore point, but it does not restore personal documents or guarantee that an infection is gone. See Microsoft’s descriptions of System Restore’s scope and its restoration behavior. A clean installation is more thorough than uninstalling one suspicious app, but it can erase data if the backup is incomplete.

What does Windows 10’s end of support mean for security?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. An ordinary installation can still run, but no longer receives routine security fixes or standard technical support, increasing exposure over time. Microsoft says consumer Extended Security Updates can extend protection to October 12, 2027, subject to eligibility and enrollment conditions. A free Windows 11 upgrade applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs that meet Windows 11 hardware requirements. Check Microsoft’s current Windows 10 end-of-support options before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a supported operating system or an eligible ESU option for the device’s longer-term security. Upgrading Windows does not itself remove an existing infection: handle suspected compromise, data, and accounts separately.

Quick decision checklist

  • Lower concern: one app has a problem, Windows Security works normally, scans find no threat, and there are no unexplained browser, account, or file changes. Investigate the app, driver, update, or hardware cause.
  • Needs closer checking: browser or startup changes persist, a PUA is detected, or symptoms recur. Review extensions and startup entries carefully, run a full scan, and consider Defender Offline or expert help.
  • Urgent: files are encrypted, credentials may have been stolen, security tools are disabled, malware detections recur, or an unknown remote-access tool or administrator account appears. Disconnect the PC, use a trusted device for account protection, and get qualified help before extensive cleanup.
