Unraveling Port Mapping and Port Forwarding: Differences and Similarities

Port forwarding is a manually configured inbound NAT rule, while port mapping is the broader term for the translation relationship. Here is how they differ, overlap, and fail.

Port forwarding is a manually configured inbound rule on a NAT gateway. Traffic sent to the gateway’s external IP address and a chosen port is translated and delivered to a specific internal address and port. Port mapping is the broader term for the translation relationship between internal and external endpoints. In practice it can mean the same inbound rule, an automatically created NAT translation, or a mapping requested by a device through NAT-PMP or PCP. The two terms overlap heavily, so the useful question is which meaning a given document or router menu intends.

What a NAT mapping actually is

The clearest definition comes from the IETF’s Port Control Protocol specification, RFC 6887 (April 2013). It states: “A NAT mapping creates a relationship between an internal IP address, protocol, and port, and an external IP address, protocol, and port.” The same document uses “mapping,” “port mapping,” and “port forwarding” as labels for this NAT translation rule. Each side of a mapping therefore has three parts: an address, a transport protocol, and a port. Changing any one of them produces a different mapping.

The terminology, in context

Router setup pages usually use “port forwarding” for a rule that a person creates by hand. “Port mapping” is less consistent. It can refer to that same rule, to the endpoint translation a NAT performs for every session, or to the automatic requests made by NAT-PMP and PCP. Vendors do not use these labels identically, so the reliable way to read them is by context.

The table below separates the three common meanings.

#1 Best Overall
TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Term in use What it describes Who creates it Illustrative example
Port forwarding A user-configured inbound rule that sends traffic arriving on an external port to a chosen internal host and port The administrator, in the gateway’s settings External TCP 8443 to 192.168.1.20 port 443
Port mapping (general NAT sense) The translation relationship between an internal and an external endpoint, including ones created automatically The gateway, when an internal device starts an outbound session An outbound TCP connection leaves a translation entry that lets replies return
Port mapping (protocol sense) A mapping requested by a host through NAT-PMP or PCP and granted, possibly with a different external port, by the gateway The application or device, with the gateway’s approval A client asks for external UDP 51820 and the gateway assigns UDP 51821 instead
Vendor label Whatever the manufacturer calls the feature Varies Check the device’s own manual before assuming a meaning

The term also appears outside consumer routers. RFC 6296 (June 2011), which covers IPv6-to-IPv6 prefix translation, uses “port mapping” for the rewriting of transport ports that NAPT44 performs. That usage matches the general sense above.

How traffic moves

Outbound connections create state automatically

When a device on your local network opens a connection outward, the gateway creates or reuses a mapping for that session and matches the returning packets to it. This is why a laptop can browse the web without anyone configuring a forwarding rule. Nothing about this process makes the laptop reachable from the internet.

Unsolicited inbound traffic needs a mapping

An inbound connection that nobody initiated has no existing state to match. RFC 6886 (NAT-PMP, April 2013) explains that, without a matching mapping, the NAT generally does not know which internal device should receive the packet, and the packet will most likely be dropped. A manually configured, permanent mapping supplies that missing answer for the ports you choose.

  1. Confirm the service is listening. On Linux, run ss -tlnp for TCP or ss -ulnp for UDP and find the port. On Windows, run netstat -ano in Command Prompt and look for the port in LISTENING state. A service bound only to 127.0.0.1 will not answer traffic from the network, even with a correct rule.
  2. Fix the device’s LAN address. Use a DHCP reservation or a static address so the rule keeps pointing at the same machine after a reboot or lease renewal.
  3. Log in to the gateway’s administration page. The address is usually printed on the device or in its manual.
  4. Create the rule. Enter the protocol (TCP, UDP, or a separate rule for each), the external port, the internal LAN address, and the internal port. The internal and external ports can differ.
  5. Save, then test from outside your network. A test from inside the LAN may reach the device through a different path and prove nothing. A phone on mobile data is a simple outside test.

External and internal ports do not have to match

A forwarding rule can map external port 2222 to internal port 22, for example, so that SSH is reached on a non-standard public port. Automatic requests work differently. RFC 6886 describes a gateway that cannot grant the requested external port returning another available port if one exists. The application must then read the assigned port from the gateway’s response; it cannot assume the one it asked for.

Automatic mapping with NAT-PMP and PCP

NAT-PMP, described in RFC 6886, lets a host ask a compatible gateway for a mapping. RFC 6886 classifies it as Informational and identifies PCP as its successor. PCP, specified in RFC 6887, is an IETF Standards Track protocol that builds on NAT-PMP and adds enhancements. Both protocols are protocol-specific: a TCP mapping and a UDP mapping are requested and granted separately. Automatic mapping works only when the gateway supports the protocol and it is enabled, and only for the applications that request it.

Translation is not permission

A mapping changes where packets are delivered. It does not decide whether they should be delivered. RFC 5382 (NAT behavioral requirements for TCP, October 2008) states that NAT security policy is independent of mapping behavior. Companion requirements for UDP appear in RFC 4787 (January 2007). Practically, a working mapping does not guarantee that:

When a forwarded service is unreachable

  • The service is not listening, or listens on a different port or only on the loopback address. Re-run the listening check above.
  • The rule points at an old address. If the device received a new LAN address, the rule now targets another machine or nothing.
  • Protocol mismatch. A TCP service needs a TCP rule. A UDP rule does not carry TCP traffic, and the reverse is also true.
  • The device’s own firewall blocks the port. Allow the port there as well.
  • The gateway’s WAN address is not public. If the address your router shows is not the one the internet sees, your provider may be running another NAT upstream. In that case a rule on your router alone cannot make the service reachable. Ask your provider whether it shares public addresses.
  • The external port was assigned differently. For automatic requests, check the port the gateway actually granted.

Forwarding opens a path, not a protection

A forwarding rule changes how selected inbound packets are delivered. It does not authenticate the people who connect, and it does not patch the service behind it. Expose only the port the application needs, keep that application updated, and rely on its own login and access controls. Port forwarding should never be counted as a security feature.
