Unlocking the Secrets of Screen Mirroring: Understanding Resolution and Its Impact

A 4K TV does not make a mirrored picture 4K. Here is how the source, receiver, display, cable, and settings each cap resolution, with the Google, Windows, and Apple checks to run.

A 4K TV does not turn a mirrored phone or computer picture into 4K. Every link in the chain has its own limit: the sending device, the receiver or adapter, the display, the cable or wireless link, the app or content, and the settings you choose. The lowest limit sets the result. Google and Microsoft publish requirements for their own devices, but neither publishes one universal screen-mirroring resolution rule, so the guidance below is organized by platform and product.

Where the resolution limit actually comes from

Resolution is the number of pixels the image is built from, counted across and down. A mirrored picture reaches your TV only after passing through several stages, and each can reduce it:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Source device. The phone, tablet, or computer may render the mirrored screen at a lower resolution than the TV can show.
  2. Receiver or adapter. A streaming device or Miracast adapter has its own maximum output.
  3. Display. The connected TV or monitor determines what the receiver can offer. Microsoft’s adapter documentation describes exactly this relationship.
  4. Cable or HDMI version. For Google’s 4K devices, the cable specification is part of the requirement (see the table below).
  5. App and content. Streaming apps may deliver a lower-resolution stream than the device can display.
  6. Selected settings. Output resolution, scaling, and frame rate can each cap the picture.

Scaling then resizes whatever arrives. Scaling can fill a larger panel, but it cannot add detail the source never sent. That is general explanatory framing, not a measured result from the sources cited here.

Why does my Google Chromecast or Google TV Streamer picture not reach 4K?

Google’s requirements page says 4K is supported only on Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and Chromecast Ultra. For 4K content, it requires a 4K-capable display, HDCP 2.2, and high-speed internet of at least 20 Mbps. Google also notes that app, device, network, geographic availability, and content length can affect performance. Google’s requirements page is undated; the figures apply to Google’s own devices.

Why does my iPhone, iPad, or Mac mirror to the TV at the wrong size?

Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting page, dated September 23, 2025, recommends that compatible devices be turned on, nearby, updated, and on the same Wi-Fi network. It also calls out enabling AirPlay receiving on the receiving device and restarting devices. If mirroring never starts, work through those checks before changing picture settings.

Why does the picture not fill the TV, or why are the edges cropped?

That symptom is usually scaling or overscan, not resolution. Apple’s overscan and underscan guidance suggests using the Mac’s Underscan setting where that option exists, or the TV’s picture controls. TV menus may label these controls underscan, zoom, aspect ratio, presentation mode, computer mode, screen fit, screen fill, or format. On Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, check the AirPlay Display Underscan control.

Is it a resolution problem or a connection problem?

Use the symptom to choose the first check:

  1. Mirroring never starts. Treat it as a connection problem. On Windows, check Miracast support, receiver setup, Wi-Fi, drivers, and firmware. On Apple devices, check AirPlay receiving, proximity, software, and the shared network.
  2. It connects but looks soft. Check the chain in the first section: the source’s output resolution, the receiver’s maximum, the cable, and the app’s stream quality.
  3. It connects but is the wrong size or cropped. Change the TV’s picture mode or scaling options, or the Windows display or adapter Fit to Display setting. Changing the source resolution alone rarely fixes this.
  4. Google 4K content stutters or drops. Check the device’s internet connection against the 20 Mbps minimum, the display’s HDCP 2.2 support, and the app itself.

Do I need a Miracast adapter or a new HDMI cable?

  • Windows device, TV without Miracast: a Miracast adapter that plugs into HDMI may be needed, per Microsoft’s guidance.
  • Windows device, need 4K through an adapter: only the Microsoft 4K Wireless Display Adapter is documented as 4K-capable, and it needs a 3840 × 2160 or higher second display.
  • Google 4K device: buy the HDMI specification the device maker and your display require, not a generic “best” cable.
  • Adapters add a receiving path only. The sending device, the display, and the content still set the ceiling.

What these sources do and do not establish

  • Google’s requirements and video-quality pages are undated, and the 4K and HDMI figures apply only to the Google devices named.
  • Microsoft’s adapter article is undated and applies to the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter.
  • Apple’s AirPlay page is dated September 23, 2025.
  • The cited sources do not cover built-in mirroring on most Android phones, smart-TV receivers, or third-party dongles. Check the maker’s documentation for those devices.
  • The sources do not support a complete ranking of AirPlay, Google Cast, and Miracast devices by picture quality.
