Unlock Your Vizio TV’s Full Potential: Which HDMI Port Should You Use?

The best HDMI port on a Vizio TV depends on the device and feature you need. Use ARC/eARC for audio, a documented 4K/120Hz input for high-refresh gaming, and any compatible enhanced input for ordinary 4K sources.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

There is no single “best” HDMI port on every Vizio TV. Use the port whose documented features match the device: HDMI ARC/eARC for a soundbar or receiver, the model’s 4K/120Hz or high-bandwidth input for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or a gaming PC, and any equivalent compatible input for ordinary streaming or Blu-ray playback. Read the labels on your exact TV and verify its model specifications before connecting anything.

The short answer: match the port to the job

What you are connecting Recommended HDMI connection Important qualification
Soundbar or AV receiver TV port labeled ARC or eARC The audio device must support the same ARC/eARC standard.
PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or gaming PC targeting 4K/120Hz Port documented for 4K 120Hz, HDMI 2.1 high bandwidth, VRR, or equivalent The TV panel, source, game, cable, and any intermediary must all support the signal.
Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, cable box, Blu-ray player, or Nintendo Switch Any input that supports the device’s maximum output Use an enhanced or full-bandwidth mode if your model requires one for 4K HDR.
Older Vizio labeled “HDMI 1 ARC” and “HDMI 2/3/4 Best” ARC for audio equipment; a “Best” or “4K UHD Color” input for video sources “Best” is a label for that model’s preferred digital connection, not a universal HDMI ranking.

On newer televisions with identical HDMI 2.1 inputs, the picture may be the same from each ordinary video input. The exception is a port reserved for ARC/eARC, which has an audio-return role. Vizio’s M-Series QX M50QXM-K01, for example, lists four HDMI 2.1 inputs, 4K at 120Hz, VRR and ARC; its specifications do not say that one ordinary video input produces a superior picture. Vizio’s M50QXM-K01 specifications were accessed August 18, 2026.

By contrast, Vizio’s V4K50M-0807 lists HDMI 2.1-type inputs and HDMI VRR but a 60Hz refresh rate. The HDMI label alone therefore does not establish 4K/120Hz capability. Vizio’s V4K50M-0807 specifications were accessed August 18, 2026.

What “HDMI Best” means on a Vizio TV

Older Vizio sets sometimes mark an input “Best” to distinguish HDMI from composite, component or coaxial connections. In Vizio’s legacy E-Series documentation, HDMI is described as the best digital audio/video connection for a source. The E421VA manual explains that terminology.

Best HDMI port for a soundbar or receiver

Connect the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC socket to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI ARC/eARC socket:

Vizio TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar or receiver HDMI ARC/eARC

Enable HDMI-CEC if your model requires it, select HDMI ARC/eARC as the TV’s audio output, and set the soundbar or receiver to its TV/ARC input. Menu names vary by Vizio generation and software.

ARC versus eARC

  • ARC can return compressed surround formats, commonly Dolby Digital and DTS.
  • eARC provides substantially more audio bandwidth and is preferable for compatible lossless and advanced surround formats.
  • Both the television and audio device must support the required standard and format. eARC alone does not guarantee Dolby Atmos.

If the soundbar has only optical input, use the TV’s optical output instead; HDMI ARC cannot work unless both devices have ARC-compatible HDMI ports. Independent testing of the 2022 Vizio V Series found model-specific ARC/eARC capabilities, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X passthrough on the tested series. Do not apply that result to every Vizio TV. RTINGS’ Vizio V Series (2022) testing provides the tested details.

When the soundbar should not sit between a console and TV

Routing a console through a soundbar or receiver simplifies switching, but the intermediary must pass every required video feature: 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision, VRR and 120Hz. If it does not, connect the console directly to the TV and return audio over ARC/eARC.

Best HDMI port for PS5, Xbox and PC gaming

Choose the input that your model documents for 4K/120Hz, high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1, VRR or ALLM. A 4K/120Hz console connected to an input limited to 4K/60Hz cannot produce 4K/120Hz.

Keep three different capabilities separate

  1. Connector: the physical HDMI socket.
  2. Input features: bandwidth, VRR, ALLM, HDR and eARC support.
  3. Panel capability: the TV’s native resolution and refresh rate.

A television can carry an HDMI 2.1-type label while using a 60Hz panel. The V4K50M-0807 is one example: its specifications list HDMI 2.1-type inputs and VRR but a 60Hz refresh rate. Conversely, independent testing of the 2022 Vizio V Series found HDMI 2.0-level bandwidth and no 4K/120Hz support despite HDMI 2.1 advertising. See the RTINGS test results. Confirm the exact model rather than relying on a retailer’s “HDMI 2.1” wording.

Gaming checks

  • Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120Hz and VRR.
  • Set the console or PC to the desired resolution and refresh rate.
  • Check that the game itself supports 120 frames per second; a 120Hz link does not make every game run at 120fps.
  • For PC text clarity, verify 4:4:4 chroma support at the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
  • Connect directly to the TV while testing, bypassing switches, capture devices, soundbars and receivers.

Best HDMI port for streaming devices, Blu-ray and cable boxes

Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, cable boxes, Blu-ray players and Nintendo Switch systems generally work from any input that supports their maximum output. If the device outputs 4K HDR or Dolby Vision, use an enhanced/full-bandwidth input mode when your Vizio requires one.

The port itself does not improve picture quality when all inputs accept the same signal. Preserve the ARC/eARC socket for your soundbar when possible, and connect the streaming device to another compatible input unless your TV specifically supports video pass-through through the audio device.

How to enable Full UHD Color, Enhanced or HDMI Mode

Vizio has changed these labels and menus across generations. They may be automatic, unavailable on a particular input, or located under gaming settings. Treat the following as examples, not universal paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the connected source and select the exact HDMI input in use.
  2. Open the input-specific picture or HDMI settings.
  3. Try Settings → All Settings → Picture → Input Picture Settings → Full UHD Color on older models.
  4. On newer software, try Settings → All Settings → HDMI & Gaming → HDMI Settings → HDMI Mode, then choose Enhanced where offered.
  5. Recheck the source’s resolution, HDR status and refresh rate.
  6. If the signal remains wrong, restart both the TV and source after changing the mode.

Turning on this option does not universally “improve” every picture. It enables the bandwidth or format the selected source may require, and some models manage it automatically.

How to verify the signal you are actually receiving

4K, HDR and Dolby Vision

  • Confirm the source reports 3840×2160 output.
  • Play a title or game known to support HDR or Dolby Vision.
  • Check the TV’s information panel or picture-mode indicator for HDR/Dolby Vision.
  • Do not treat an HDR badge as proof of 4K; resolution and dynamic range are separate.

4K/120Hz and VRR

  • On Xbox, open the television-details screen and check 4K UHD, 120Hz, HDR10, VRR and ALLM compatibility.
  • On PS5, open Screen and Video information and test 120Hz output.
  • On a PC, confirm the active refresh rate in the operating system or GPU control panel.
  • Verify that the game supports 120fps and that VRR is enabled compatibly.

Surround and Atmos audio

  • Confirm that the soundbar or receiver displays the expected format.
  • Set TV audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC where required.
  • Test known surround or Atmos content.
  • If audio drops out, temporarily select PCM or Dolby Digital to distinguish a basic ARC issue from an advanced-format passthrough problem.

Fixes when the picture or sound is wrong

Only 1080p appears

  • Set the source to 4K or Auto.
  • Enable the input’s Full UHD Color, Enhanced or equivalent mode.
  • Use a cable rated for the signal.
  • Test the source directly on the TV, bypassing the AVR or soundbar.
  • Check HDCP compatibility and power-cycle every device.

HDR or Dolby Vision is missing

  • Confirm that the title or game actually supports the format.
  • Set the source to automatic HDR output.
  • Check the selected HDMI mode, cable and HDCP path.
  • Temporarily remove switches, receivers and soundbars from the video path.

120Hz is unavailable

  • Verify that the TV has a genuine 120Hz-or-faster panel and a documented 4K/120Hz input.
  • Set the console or PC to 120Hz.
  • Check the game’s frame-rate mode.
  • Bypass bandwidth-limited intermediaries and capture hardware.

No sound through ARC/eARC

  1. Confirm TV ARC/eARC is connected to soundbar/receiver ARC/eARC.
  2. Enable HDMI-CEC if required.
  3. Set TV audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC and the soundbar to TV/ARC.
  4. Try another certified high-speed HDMI cable.
  5. Power off both devices, unplug them briefly, reconnect the TV first, then the soundbar.
  6. Test PCM or Dolby Digital to isolate an advanced-format passthrough issue.

The HDMI option is greyed out

  • Select the correct HDMI input and turn on the source.
  • Check whether that input supports the feature.
  • Some models enable the feature automatically.
  • A 60Hz panel or limited-bandwidth input may not expose 120Hz controls.
  • Update firmware and repeat a direct-connection test if the handshake is failing.

Does HDMI 2.1 always mean 4K/120Hz?

No. “HDMI 2.1” can describe an input implementation without proving 48Gbps bandwidth, a 120Hz panel or 4K/120Hz support. Vizio’s own model pages demonstrate the distinction: the M50QXM-K01 lists 4K/120Hz and VRR, while the V4K50M-0807 lists HDMI 2.1-type inputs but a 60Hz panel. Multi-model manuals also show why model identification matters. Consult the exact manual or Vizio support listing for your set, such as the 2024 Vizio 4K manual and the 2022 V-Series manual.

Which HDMI cable do you need?

For PS5, Xbox Series X, a gaming PC, 4K/120Hz or VRR, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with explicit 48Gbps support. Belkin, Monoprice and Cable Matters publish Ultra High Speed HDMI options at their official sites: Belkin, Monoprice and Cable Matters.

  • A short, well-built cable is preferable to an unnecessarily long one.
  • For a TV limited to 4K/60Hz, an expensive 48Gbps cable is not required unless it solves a reliability problem.
  • A cable can resolve bandwidth or handshake errors, but it cannot upgrade an unsupported panel, input, firmware or defective port.

Final port-selection checklist

  1. Find the TV’s exact model number.
  2. Read the labels beside every HDMI socket.
  3. Reserve ARC/eARC for the soundbar or receiver unless the port also meets the console’s video requirements.
  4. Use the documented 4K/120Hz or high-bandwidth input for high-refresh gaming.
  5. Use any equivalent compatible input for ordinary 4K streaming and playback.
  6. Enable the input-specific Full UHD Color, Enhanced or HDMI Mode setting when available.
  7. Verify resolution, HDR/Dolby Vision, refresh rate, VRR and audio format at the source and TV.
  8. For failures, test directly from source to TV, then add the soundbar, receiver or switch back one device at a time.

For model-specific port assignments and feature limits, use Vizio’s support portal and the manual for your exact model.
