“Unique crypto name” is not a standard technical term. If you mean a way to distinguish one crypto token from another, the relevant standard is the Digital Token Identifier (DTI), defined by ISO 24165. A token’s display name or ticker is not a globally unique identifier. If you mean a readable blockchain name such as alice.eth, that is a different system: it can point to addresses and other records.
What does “unique crypto name” mean?
The phrase is ambiguous. It may refer to a token’s name or ticker, a technical identifier assigned to a token, or a human-readable blockchain name. These are not interchangeable. The established technical concept for identifying a digital token is the Digital Token Identifier (DTI), not a “unique crypto name.”

No—not by itself. A display name or ticker is a human-facing label, not a standardized global identifier. In a February 13, 2025 submission to the SEC Crypto Task Force, the DTI Foundation said crypto-asset names are not standardized or unique across exchanges. That statement does not establish the exact naming practice of every exchange, but it illustrates why a label alone may not reliably distinguish assets. When checking which asset a listing refers to, do not treat a familiar name or ticker as proof of identity. Look for an identifier tied to the token and verify the relevant network and asset details through an authoritative source.
What is a Digital Token Identifier?
A Digital Token Identifier, or DTI, is an identifier assigned to a digital token under ISO 24165. ISO 24165-1:2025, the standard’s second edition published in May 2025, defines how a random, unique, fixed-length identifier is generated and assigned following a registration request. ISO 24165-1:2025
The DTI Foundation describes a DTI as eight characters plus a checksum and emphasizes that “The identifier is assigned to the token, not registered to the applicant.” Assignment identifies the token; it does not certify its features, purpose, regulatory compliance, or value. A DTI is not necessarily present for every crypto-asset. EU Delegated Regulation 2025/421 includes a DTI field for identifying crypto-assets related to a white paper where available; that is a data-field use, not a statement that every token has one. Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/421

How is a DTI different from an ENS name?
An ENS name is designed to be readable and resolvable, rather than to serve as a standardized identifier for a token. Ethereum Name Service describes ENS as a naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. A name such as alice.eth can resolve to an Ethereum address, another cryptocurrency address, a content hash, metadata, or another record. ENS also distinguishes the name from its node: a cryptographic hash that uniquely identifies that name within ENS. ENS documentation ENS terminology
| Question | Digital Token Identifier (DTI) | ENS name |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Identify a digital token. | Provide a human-readable name that resolves to records. |
| Form | Fixed-length assigned identifier; the DTI Foundation describes eight characters plus a checksum. | A name such as alice.eth; ENS also derives a node hash from the name. |
| What it identifies or resolves | A registered digital token. | Addresses, content hashes, metadata, and other records. |
| What it does not establish | Token quality, value, purpose, or regulatory compliance. | It is not a standardized token identifier. |
| Allocation context | Registration and assignment under ISO 24165. | ENS registrars set allocation rules for names under a top-level domain. |
Does a unique identifier prove that a crypto project is legitimate?
No. A DTI distinguishes a token within an identification system; it does not verify that the token is safe, valuable, legally compliant, or likely to perform well. Likewise, a readable blockchain name does not establish the project’s legitimacy or give its owner trademark rights.
Technical identification, brand distinctiveness, trademark clearance, and domain availability are separate questions. The cited standards and ENS materials explain token identification and name resolution, not whether a proposed project name is legally available.

Which kind of name or identifier do you need?
- To distinguish a token: look for its DTI, where available, and confirm the asset and network using reliable records.
- To make an address easier to read or share: an ENS name can resolve to blockchain records, subject to the name’s configured records and ENS allocation rules.
- To name a crypto project or brand: treat that as a separate naming and legal-clearance task; a DTI or ENS name does not settle trademark or domain questions.
