To uninstall Avast Antivirus, first use Windows’ normal app-removal flow and complete the prompts in Avast Setup; restart when asked. If that process fails or Setup is stuck, use Avast’s official Uninstall Tool in Safe Mode. Removing Avast also removes its protection, and uninstalling a paid Avast app does not cancel its subscription.
Before you uninstall Avast
If you are removing Avast to fix a problem, Avast suggests trying an update, repair, or relevant settings change first. If you intend to remove it, proceed with the steps below.

After Avast Free Antivirus is uninstalled, the PC is no longer protected by it. Check that another protection option is active. Avast’s uninstall instructions explain the protection change.
If you have a paid Avast Premium Security or Avast One subscription, uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Handle cancellation separately through your Avast account or billing channel. See Avast’s Uninstall Tool guidance.

Uninstall Avast through Windows first
The exact app label and menu wording may vary by Avast edition and version. Select the Avast product shown on your PC. Windows offers more than one route to its uninstall controls; Microsoft recommends using Settings or Control Panel, and notes that Control Panel is an option if an app is not listed in Settings. Microsoft’s Windows uninstall guidance covers these paths.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and open the app list. You can also go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus (or the installed Avast product), open its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Confirm Uninstall again if prompted.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
- In Avast Setup, select Uninstall, confirm removal, and optionally skip the customer survey.
- Wait for Setup to finish. When Avast displays the completion message or prompts you, restart the PC.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, or open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Avast Free Antivirus (or the Avast product installed) and choose Uninstall.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if shown. In Avast Setup, choose Uninstall and confirm removal.
- Wait for the uninstall to complete, then restart when Avast prompts you.
Microsoft also lists Start > All apps as a route to uninstalling apps in Windows 10 and 11. If an uninstall error occurs, its Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter may help.

If the normal uninstall fails: use Avast’s Safe Mode tool
Use this fallback if removal from Start or the app list fails, or Avast Setup says the process is already running. Avast’s Uninstall Tool is intended to remove Avast files while Windows runs in Safe Mode. Its guidance covers Avast Free Antivirus, Avast Premium Security, and Avast One; the download name or wizard labels can differ by product.
- Download Avast’s official Uninstall Tool, commonly named
avastclear.exe, from Avast Support and save it locally. - Right-click the downloaded tool and choose Run as administrator. Approve User Account Control if prompted.
- Choose Reboot to safe mode in the tool and confirm the restart.
- In Safe Mode, choose Remove only, then confirm Uninstall.
- Let the tool finish removing Avast files, then restart Windows.
The tool also provides a remove-and-reinstall route if your goal is to reinstall Avast rather than leave it removed.

How to confirm removal is complete
Finish the restart requested by Avast Setup or the Safe Mode tool. Then check the Windows app list or Control Panel’s Programs and Features to see whether the Avast product is still listed. Confirm separately that another protection option is active; removing the app does not leave Avast protection running.
