Google’s Gboard help documents themes, sound, vibration, and emoji-size controls—not this kind of per-key output mapping—so the difference is customization granularity, not an absence of Gboard customization.
What Unexpected Keyboard lets you customize
Unexpected Keyboard is an Android virtual keyboard, not a physical keyboard. Its distinctive interaction is reaching extra characters by swiping from a key toward one of its corners. The project says it was originally designed for programmers using Termux, while also being intended for everyday use. See the project README and Google Play listing.

For a custom layout, you can define rows and key positions, choose the action a key performs on tap, and assign actions to directional swipes. The layout format also supports key width, spacing, and modifier-key behavior. In the XML, c specifies a key’s tap action; compass properties such as n, se, and sw specify swipe actions. That makes the app useful when you want a particular character or action on a particular key or swipe direction, rather than only a different visual theme.

- Open Unexpected Keyboard’s settings and select an existing layout or add an alternate layout.
- Choose “Custom layout” to edit the layout’s XML. The project’s custom-layout guide explains the format for defining the keyboard name and writing system, rows, key positions, tap actions, swipe actions, widths, spacing, and modifier mapping.
- Save a separate copy of your XML. The project warns that edits kept only in the app can be lost if you install a build from a different source with a different signature.
If you prefer not to write the XML directly, the project documents a web-based editor: create the layout there, copy the generated XML, and paste it into the app. The editor is an optional workflow.

How it differs from Gboard
Google’s Gboard personalization help describes controls for themes, key-tap sound and volume, keyboard vibration, and emoji size. It does not describe editing the output assigned to each key or its directional swipes. The supported distinction is therefore that Unexpected Keyboard’s documented custom layouts expose per-key behavior mapping, while the cited Gboard help covers appearance and feedback controls. This is not a complete feature comparison.

Which keyboard should you choose?
Choose Unexpected Keyboard if
- You want specific keys or swipe directions to produce actions you choose.
- You are comfortable editing XML or using a web editor and maintaining a separate backup of your layout.
- Your priority is control over key behavior and layout rather than relying only on the settings documented in Gboard’s personalization help.
Choose based on your everyday typing needs, too
The documentation cited here does not establish which keyboard is faster or more accurate, or compare predictive text, correction quality, language coverage, and accessibility. If those matter to your choice, assess them for your own languages and typing habits rather than inferring an advantage from layout customization alone. Gboard’s cited controls may be enough if your goal is to change themes or typing feedback without authoring a custom layout.

Compatibility and availability
