What undervolting changes—and what the warranty question means
Undervolting means lowering the voltage supplied to a CPU or GPU through a control provided by firmware, a system maker, or supported software. Users may pursue it to reduce power use or heat, but the cited manufacturer material does not establish a typical saving, temperature reduction, performance effect, or extension of hardware life.

Warranty wording matters. A warning that a change may void coverage is not the same as a rule that every undervolt cancels all coverage. Some terms address altering voltage itself; others exclude a defect only when the manufacturer determines it was caused by out-of-specification operation. Warranty language can also differ between a standalone component and the complete computer it is installed in.
What the cited manufacturers say
Intel: voltage changes carry an explicit warning
Intel’s boxed-processor warranty page says: “Altering clock frequency or voltage may void any product warranties and reduce stability, security, performance, and life of the processor and other components.” Intel reviewed the page on May 13, 2026. AMD: focus on out-of-spec operation and causation
AMD’s Ryzen Master user guide warns that damage caused by using an AMD processor outside official specifications or factory settings is not covered under an AMD product warranty and may not be covered by the board or system manufacturer. AMD’s processor limited warranty separately excludes certain defects or non-conformances when AMD determines they were caused by improper use, operation, or modification outside AMD specifications; it also names overclocking. The causation qualification matters: the cited warranty describes an exclusion tied to the cause AMD determines, rather than stating that any change automatically voids coverage. NVIDIA’s cited US GeForce graphics-card warranty covers manufacturing defects or hardware component failures and excludes problems unrelated to those conditions, including abuse, misuse, negligence, misapplication of service, and software. The page does not specifically address undervolting, so its silence cannot establish either that undervolting voids coverage or that it is always permitted. NVIDIA’s EU warranty page says its written warranty does not affect legal rights, including rights to make a claim under legal guarantees for the product. Why the exact computer and warranty issuer matter
A CPU or GPU can be covered by a component maker, while a laptop or prebuilt desktop may be covered by the system manufacturer or seller. Intel says OEM-system processors are generally handled by the OEM. AMD’s warning likewise says out-of-specification damage may not be covered by the board or system manufacturer. The component brand alone therefore may not identify the party that decides a claim.

The settings available also vary. Intel describes Undervolt Protection as limiting voltage below a minimum set in BIOS or the processor default. Intel says the feature is available on 12th Gen Intel Core processors and newer, while OEMs determine which menu options users can access. - Identify the product. Record the processor or graphics-card model and, for a laptop or prebuilt PC, the complete system model.
- Find the warranty that applies. Use the warranty document for the product, selling region, and purchase date. For an OEM system, check the system maker’s terms as well as any component warranty information.
- Check how the setting is provided. Confirm whether the BIOS or software control is supported by the system or component maker, and compare the intended setting with published specifications and factory settings.
- Read the relevant exclusion closely. Look for whether it addresses voltage or modification itself, or instead excludes damage a manufacturer determines was caused by out-of-specification use.
- Ask the warranty issuer in writing if the stakes are high. Request clarification for your exact model, setting, and region; do not assume a policy for another product or country applies to yours.
Returning settings to default may restore default operation, but the cited terms do not establish that doing so erases logs or guarantees warranty coverage.

What to expect from the trade-off
Undervolting may be pursued to reduce power or heat, but the available manufacturer material does not quantify those benefits or establish a typical result. Intel explicitly warns that changing voltage can reduce stability, security, performance, and component life; this is Intel’s stated risk warning, not evidence that every undervolt causes those outcomes. Whether a particular change is supported, stable, or covered depends on the hardware, system configuration, and applicable warranty terms.
