A slide switch is a manually operated switch whose sliding actuator moves internal contacts to open, close, or redirect a circuit connection. Most slide switches stay in the position you set until you move them again. Choosing one correctly takes two steps: first confirm the circuit function (how many paths and destinations you need), then check the exact part number’s datasheet for voltage, current, mounting, and environmental limits. A switch that physically fits the panel or board is not thereby suitable for the load.
How a slide switch works
The user moves a linear actuator along a track. Inside the housing, a conductive contact assembly moves with it, and at each end of travel the assembly makes or breaks connections to fixed terminals. Depending on the design, the switch can simply interrupt one connection, or it can take a common connection and route it to one of two contacts.

The key behavior is that the switch is maintained-contact. TE Connectivity describes it this way: a slide switch is a maintained-contact switch that stays in one state until it is actuated into a new state, where it remains until it is actuated again. In practical terms, the switch does not spring back when released, unlike a momentary pushbutton. That makes slide switches suited to choices that should persist, such as power on or off, or which of two modes a device is in.
Pin layout is not standardized across all slide switches. Two parts with the same overall shape can wire their terminals differently, so use the manufacturer’s circuit diagram or terminal numbering for the exact model before soldering or wiring.

Reading pole and throw labels
Switch catalogs describe configuration with two terms. A pole is an independently switched circuit path. A throw is a contact position that a pole can connect to. Combining these gives the standard designations:
| Designation | What it switches | Typical function |
|---|---|---|
| SPST (single pole, single throw) | One path, one destination | Simple on/off control of a single connection |
| SPDT (single pole, double throw) | One common connection that can go to either of two contacts | Selecting between two paths, such as two modes or two signal routes |
| DPST (double pole, single throw) | Two independent paths, each with one destination | Opening or closing two separate connections together |
| DPDT (double pole, double throw) | Two independent paths, each able to go to one of two destinations | Switching two circuits between two destinations at once |
TE Connectivity lists SPDT, DPST, and DPDT slide switch options in its product material and explains the pole and throw terms in its configuration guide. These labels tell you how the circuit is routed. They say nothing about how much current or voltage the switch can carry. A DPDT switch and an SPST switch can have very different load ratings, and a DPDT part may be built for signal-level switching only.

Where slide switches are used
Slide switches appear in consumer electronics, test equipment, hobby and prototype projects, and internal control panels. Their common roles are:
Recommended Free Tools
- Power on/off: a maintained switch on a low-voltage supply or control circuit.
- Mode or range selection: choosing between operating modes, input sources, or signal paths.
- Signal routing: directing a connection to one of two destinations on a board.
Those uses describe the typical role of small slide switches, not a guarantee of suitability. Using a small signal or low-power slide switch to switch mains voltage, a motor, or another demanding load requires checking the exact rating and the applicable electrical safety requirements for that design. If the rating is not published for your application, do not use the part for it.

How to choose a slide switch
- Define the circuit function. Decide whether you need simple on/off control, selection between two paths, or several independently switched paths. Match that to SPST, SPDT, DPST, or DPDT, and confirm the number of positions against the circuit diagram.
- Check the electrical rating for your actual load. Find the rated voltage and current for the exact model and compare them to your load, noting whether it is AC or DC and what kind of load it is. Treat the datasheet as the authority. Do not carry over a rating from a different series, and do not estimate a safe load from the switch’s size or appearance.
- Confirm contact behavior. Verify that the part is maintained-contact or momentary/self-return, as required by your circuit, and whether switching timing matters.
- Match mounting and termination. Choose PCB through-hole or surface-mount, panel mount, solder lug, or wire termination to suit the assembly. Check actuator orientation, height, travel, pin pitch, and package dimensions against the enclosure or board layout.
- Review the environment and durability. Look at sealing and IP protection, operating temperature, contact material, and mechanical or electrical life where they matter for your use. DigiKey’s technical guide on switches lists the IP rating as a selection parameter, but any protection claim has to be verified on the chosen part.
Why ratings must come from the exact part
Manufacturer listings show how much ratings can differ within one product line. Nidec Components publishes the following family-level specifications. The publication dates are not stated on the product listings.
| Nidec Components family | Published electrical specification | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| CUS | 4 VDC, 300 mA | Nidec Components product listing; publication year not stated |
| 8SS | 125 VAC, 6 A; 30 VDC, 4 A | Nidec Components product listing; publication year not stated |
The 8SS figures show that one family can carry a higher current at AC than at DC, so a rating must always be read with its voltage type attached. These are specifications for those families only. They are not a general rating for slide switches, and they do not transfer to any other series. Confirm the figures against the exact part number’s current datasheet before designing around them.

Comparing two candidate parts
When you narrow down two or more parts, compare them on the same axes: circuit configuration and positions, voltage and current rating for your load type, contact behavior, mounting and termination, package dimensions and actuator fit, sealing and environment, and published mechanical and electrical life. Do not compare on a single “power rating,” because the numbers depend on AC or DC conditions and the type of load.
