Microsoft Sync Framework is a developer platform for building synchronization between data stores—not a single end-user app that syncs everything automatically. It provides a runtime and metadata model, while providers connect particular stores such as databases, file systems, and RSS or Atom feeds. Version 2.1 support ended on January 13, 2021, so it is best approached as a legacy platform whose compatibility and lifecycle need checking before use.

What Microsoft Sync Framework is

Microsoft described Sync Framework as a platform for collaboration and offline access across applications, services, and devices. The framework supplies synchronization infrastructure; an application uses providers to connect that infrastructure to the data stores it needs to synchronize. It is therefore a toolkit for developers, not a consumer cloud-sync service or a complete synchronization application.

The platform’s documented scope includes database synchronization through ADO.NET, file-system synchronization, and feed synchronization. Developers could also create custom providers for stores without a packaged provider. Microsoft’s documentation download page describes the product as “a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline access for applications, services, and devices.” Microsoft Sync Framework documentation

How synchronization works

The architecture has four connected parts: a synchronization runtime, metadata services, providers, and participants. Each participating data store is treated as a replica or endpoint. Its provider retrieves local changes, applies incoming changes, and takes part in change detection and conflict handling. Metadata—potentially including versions, anchors, and change information—helps determine what has changed and what another replica has already received. Microsoft’s archived provider overview

A typical synchronization session

  1. Connect providers. The application connects the provider for each participating store through the framework.
  2. Choose the flow. The application can request upload, download, or both directions. Microsoft’s archived implementation article describes SyncOrchestrator as managing data flow.
  3. Compare knowledge and transfer changes. Providers exchange information about changes, using metadata to avoid reapplying changes a replica already knows about.
  4. Apply changes and address conflicts. The destination provider applies incoming changes; provider and application behavior determine how conflicts are handled.

For two-way synchronization, changes flow in both directions. Sync Framework provides mechanisms and provider interfaces, but the application still needs a deliberate policy for conflicts, deletion, and what happens when replicas have been disconnected. Microsoft’s archived implementation article

Documented provider families and use cases

Provider family What it connects Relevant considerations
ADO.NET database synchronization ADO.NET-enabled database sources, including disconnected or collaborative database scenarios. Microsoft’s 2.1 SDK materials describe direct two-tier connections and N-tier arrangements using a hosted provider and local proxy. Check metadata-format compatibility before changing provider versions.
File-system synchronization File and folder replicas in local or network contexts. The archived FileSyncProvider API reference says metadata is stored by default in a Metadata Storage Service database file in the replica root. Options include whether deleted files go to the recycle bin or are permanently deleted.
Web/FeedSync RSS and Atom feed scenarios. FeedSync adds synchronization capabilities to feeds; it does not replace the RSS or Atom formats.
Custom providers Stores not covered by a packaged provider. The implementer must provide and maintain store-specific change retrieval, change application, metadata, and conflict behavior.

Is Microsoft Sync Framework still supported?

No: Microsoft Lifecycle lists the extended support end date for Sync Framework 2.1 as January 13, 2021. For version 1.0, Microsoft lists mainstream support through January 15, 2014, and extended support through January 9, 2019. Microsoft Lifecycle: Sync Framework 2.1 and Microsoft Lifecycle: Sync Framework 1.0

Microsoft’s 1.0 lifecycle page separately notes that Sync Framework 1.0 SP1 support ended January 8, 2019, except when distributed as a component of SharePoint Server 2013, 2016, or 2019; in those cases, the components receive the support of the parent platform. That exception does not establish support for a standalone installation, and the embedded SharePoint product’s lifecycle must be checked separately.

Microsoft still lists historical documentation and redistributable downloads, including separate packages for the runtime, provider services, and database providers. Their availability as downloads does not establish that installers work on every current Windows release or that the framework has current support. What to check before maintaining or upgrading it

Database metadata can make an upgrade irreversible

The Sync Framework 2.1 SDK warns that the database providers’ newer metadata format is incompatible with earlier provider versions and that upgrading metadata to the newer format cannot be undone. The 2.1 SqlSyncProvider can detect 2.0 metadata and use backward-compatibility behavior, but that is not a substitute for checking every participant and its version. Microsoft Sync Framework 2.1 SDK

  • Inventory the provider and framework versions used by every client, server, and intermediary.
  • Back up synchronization metadata and the underlying data before changing provider versions or formats.
  • Verify that all participants can interoperate with the intended metadata format before upgrading any replica.

Confirm the platform and synchronization policy

  • Verify operating-system and runtime requirements against the actual deployment target; the historical package listing alone does not confirm compatibility with current Windows versions.
  • Decide whether synchronization is one-way or bidirectional and whether data flows directly or through an intermediary.
  • Establish who owns change tracking and metadata, and define conflict and deletion behavior for the chosen provider.
  • For a custom provider, account for ongoing responsibility for change retrieval, application, metadata, and conflict handling.

These checks matter because the framework coordinates providers but does not eliminate application-specific decisions. There is no universal performance winner among its approaches; suitability depends on the stores, topology, change patterns, and policies involved.

Is it a sensible choice for new software?

Given that Sync Framework 2.1 support ended in 2021, it should not be treated as a current default for a new system. It may remain relevant when maintaining an existing application or when compatibility with an established deployment is essential. For a new project, first verify that the required provider, runtime, operating-system compatibility, and support commitments meet the project’s needs; the historical documentation and downloads do not answer those current-platform questions.
