“Input mode” on a Samsung device can mean different things depending on where you see it: a phone’s Input Method indicator, a keyboard’s text-entry options, a Galaxy Watch message screen, or the drawing and typing tools in Samsung Notes. The right explanation depends on your device, app, and software version; there is no single Samsung setting or set of steps that applies to them all.
What “input mode” means on a Samsung device
Input mode describes how a particular screen or app accepts text or marks. Depending on the context, you may be typing with an on-screen or physical keyboard, writing by hand, speaking, or drawing with an S Pen. Those options are not necessarily grouped under one setting called “Input mode.”

First identify where the label or icon appears. A status-bar indicator on an older Galaxy phone, a text-entry screen on a watch, and a note opened with an S Pen refer to different controls and behaviors.

Samsung’s Galaxy Alpha support page describes an Input Method indicator that appears when the keyboard is on; touching it lets the user select a text-input mode. Samsung lists Voice Input and S Pen as separate indicators on that model. These descriptions are specific to the Galaxy Alpha and should not be treated as current instructions for every Galaxy phone. Samsung Keyboard on phones and tablets
Samsung Keyboard supports several ways to enter text, including its on-screen keyboard, voice input, handwriting recognition, and text entry from a hardware keyboard. Its available functions can vary by country and device, so the options shown on your screen may differ from another Samsung user’s. Samsung Keyboard on Galaxy Store.
For a physical keyboard, the practical question is whether your device and keyboard are compatible and what layout the current setup supports. Samsung Keyboard describes optimized layouts for keyboard covers and DeX, but that does not guarantee that every cover works with every tablet.

Galaxy Watch3 text entry
Samsung’s Watch3 instructions describe handwriting and keyboard entry for text. Language and layout availability is limited, and those instructions apply to Galaxy Watch3—not automatically to later or other Galaxy Watch models. Samsung Hong Kong: Enter text on Galaxy Watch3.

In a Samsung Members discussion, a moderator’s April 22, 2025 reply says that, in the described Galaxy S24 Ultra context, opening a note with the S Pen starts drawing mode by design; manually opening Notes typically starts a new note in text-input mode. A separate Samsung Community post mentions a “new default input mode” for Notes, but does not establish which devices receive it or exactly how it behaves. How to identify the setting you need
- Note the device and model. For example, distinguish a Galaxy phone, tablet, or Watch, and record the full model name if you can.
- Identify the app or screen. Is the control in the status bar, Samsung Keyboard, a watch messaging screen, or Samsung Notes?
- Record the exact label or icon. “Input Method,” handwriting, voice, and drawing mode do not necessarily refer to the same feature.
- Check your software and app versions. Features and menu labels may differ between devices and releases.
- Use the current manual or support page for that exact model. Do not apply Galaxy Alpha, Watch3, or Galaxy S24 Ultra steps to another device without confirming they match.
Why the available choices may differ
- Device and software: A phone, tablet, and watch can offer different controls, and updates may change app behavior.
- App and screen: Keyboard options, watch message-entry methods, and Notes drawing tools belong to different contexts.
- Language and region: Samsung says Samsung Keyboard functions can vary by country or device; Watch3 text-entry options also have language and regional restrictions.
- Accessories: Hardware-keyboard input depends on a compatible device and keyboard. Handwriting with an S Pen likewise depends on device compatibility; the cited guidance does not establish one pen that works with every Samsung device.
