Understand NFT Smart Contracts, Token Ownership, and Metadata

An NFT smart contract is blockchain code that manages token rules and records. The token, its associated media, and the contract are distinct.

An NFT smart contract is a program deployed on a blockchain that applies rules to non-fungible tokens and records their state, such as which address owns a token. It is not the artwork or other digital item associated with the token. In Ethereum’s ERC-721 standard, a specific token is identified by its contract address and token ID; its media and descriptive details may be referenced separately through metadata.

How the contract, NFT, and digital asset differ

  • Smart contract: The deployed program that implements token rules and maintains token records.
  • NFT: An individually identified token managed by the contract. Under ERC-721, the token ID is unique within that contract.
  • Associated asset or metadata: Information such as a name, description, or image that may be referenced by a URI rather than stored in the contract itself.

On Ethereum, the contract address paired with the token ID forms a fully qualified identifier for a particular token. ERC-721’s specification describes its purpose as “A standard interface for non-fungible tokens, also known as deeds.” The standard defines a common interface, not the artwork or the legal terms attached to it. How an NFT smart contract works

  1. Minting: A creator or other authorized caller invokes the contract’s minting functionality, if provided, to create a token and assign it to an address. The standard interface does not make every project’s minting permissions or process identical.
  2. Ownership checks: Applications can query ERC-721 contracts with functions such as ownerOf and balanceOf to check a token’s recorded owner or an address’s token balance.
  3. Approvals and transfers: The owner can transfer a token or authorize an operator to act on their behalf. ERC-721 includes transferFrom and safeTransferFrom; safe transfers check whether a recipient contract can accept the token.
  4. Events: The contract emits standard events, including Transfer, to report ownership changes. Under ERC-721 event rules, transfers include minting and burning.

ERC-721 specifies core functions, events, and interfaces, but projects can add implementation-specific behavior. A contract’s exact minting controls, fees, restrictions, or other features cannot be inferred just from the fact that it uses ERC-721. Ethereum.org provides an introductory explanation of NFTs.

Where NFT images and descriptions are stored

An ERC-721 contract does not necessarily contain the image or full descriptive record associated with a token. The standard’s metadata extension is optional. When implemented, the tokenURI function can return a URI pointing to a JSON document with fields such as a name, description, and image. The URI is a reference to metadata; it does not mean that the referenced media is embedded in the contract. ERC-721 metadata specification

ERC-721 and ERC-1155: two Ethereum token standards

Feature ERC-721 ERC-1155
What it is designed to manage Individually identified non-fungible tokens Multiple token types, including fungible, non-fungible, or semi-fungible configurations
Can one contract manage multiple token types? Focused on individually tracked NFTs Yes
Batch operations Not the defining multi-token feature described for this standard Supports batch operations

In ERC-1155, a token type with a supply of one is essentially an NFT. Its ability to manage different token types and perform batch operations can suit projects that need a mix of items or grouped transfers. The standards have different interfaces and are not interchangeable in every detail. ERC-1155 specification

What owning an NFT does—and does not—establish

The contract records token state, including ownership as defined by its rules. That technical record alone does not establish that the holder owns copyright or legal title to an associated image, song, or other work. Those rights depend on separate terms and applicable law, not simply on the token standard.

These standards describe Ethereum contracts. Other blockchain ecosystems may use different token standards and interfaces, so ERC-721 or ERC-1155 behavior should not be assumed for every NFT.
