Uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) collect marine survey data without onboard crew. XOCEAN’s model combines those vessels with remote fleet operations and cloud processing, aiming to make useful offshore data available near real time. The key is not vessel size alone: it is the system connecting data acquisition, operations and processing.
What an uncrewed surface vessel does
A USV is a vessel that operates on the water without crew aboard. In XOCEAN’s commercial survey model, vessels go offshore to acquire data used in marine projects. The interview with CEO James Ives describes work in areas including offshore energy, fishing and bathymetry—the measurement and mapping of underwater depth and terrain. It does not identify a particular vessel model or specify a standard sensor payload.

Marine surveys can use methods such as sonar, echosounding and magnetometry. The data can help characterize seabed geology and structural stability, map ocean conditions, or inform work involving offshore wind farms and subsea cables. These are examples of marine-data needs, not evidence that XOCEAN performs every kind of survey for every application.

How data moves from the vessel to the client
- Acquire survey data offshore. USVs collect information while operating at sea. The interview does not specify a sensor configuration for each task.
- Send data toward the processing environment. XOCEAN CEO James Ives says the system streams data from offshore into a cloud-based environment. Offshore connectivity is constrained, and the interview gives no communications hardware, bandwidth or latency figures.
- Prioritize and process data. The company describes cloud processing that determines what to process and scale. Its stated objective is near-real-time access to usable data, but no numeric delivery time or guarantee is provided.
- Make processed data available to clients. The intended outcome is faster access to information that can support marine project decisions. The interview does not publish service-level or uptime measures.
Ives describes the arrangement as an end-to-end system shaped by offshore conditions and connectivity limits. AWS infrastructure supports the distributed operating model alongside remote fleet operations and data processing, according to the interview. The source does not detail the architecture or establish performance benchmarks.

Why operate a fleet of smaller vessels?
XOCEAN’s stated rationale is that multiple smaller assets can offer flexibility when weather, permits or project scope change, while reducing reliance on a single asset. The company also presents the model as a way to reduce cost and offshore exposure compared with conventional crewed surveys. The interview provides no independently measured cost comparison, risk rate or proof that these benefits apply to every survey.
This is why evaluating only the vessel can miss the operating model. The work also depends on remote coordination, communications that function within offshore constraints, and processing that turns collected data into usable outputs. As Ives puts it, “XOCEAN has learned that scale comes from systems, not size.”

How to interpret XOCEAN’s offshore-wind figures
In a 2026 interview, Ives said XOCEAN had delivered data for projects representing approximately 48 gigawatts of offshore-wind capacity across development, construction and operations. That figure describes the capacity of projects the company says it has supported; it is not capacity installed or owned by XOCEAN.
Ives also described a forward-looking pipeline exceeding 100 gigawatts, based on projects and programs the company says it is actively supporting with clients. This is a view of prospective work, not a record of completed projects. Both figures are company statements from the interview, not independently audited performance measures.
