umux FAQ: Sessions, Reattachment, and Safe Shutdown

CrystalPlatforms’ umux restores documented workspace state, but its reviewed docs do not guarantee that active commands survive app closure or a restart.

Short answer: CrystalPlatforms’ umux documentation says it saves and restores workspace state, but it does not establish that running commands survive closing the app or restarting your computer. Restoring a terminal workspace is not the same as keeping its processes alive.

What does umux restore when you reopen it?

CrystalPlatforms describes umux as a desktop terminal workspace manager. Its repository says reopening the app restores workspaces, panels, layout, working directories, and shells. The README also identifies per-platform configuration files for workspace definitions. See the CrystalPlatforms umux repository.

That describes saved workspace configuration and arrangement. It does not confirm that a command that was running before closure is still running afterward, or that its terminal output and scrollback return.

Do umux sessions survive closing the app or a restart?

The reviewed CrystalPlatforms documentation does not clearly say whether an in-flight command survives an ordinary app close, quitting umux, an app crash, operating-system shutdown, or reboot. It therefore does not support promising that a running process will remain alive. A workspace may reopen with its panels and shell settings without the previous process being preserved.

If a command is important, save its output and work through that command’s own recovery or checkpoint options before closing umux or shutting down the computer. Do not treat workspace restoration as a backup of active process state.

How do I reattach to a session?

The reviewed primary documentation does not provide a verified, step-by-step reattachment procedure for CrystalPlatforms’ umux. It also does not document a daemon-managed handshake, what happens if reattachment races with a process, or how to recover from a failed attachment. Avoid relying on instructions for a similarly named product unless you have confirmed they apply to your umux project and version.

Is it safe to shut down umux while a command is running?

No general safety guarantee is established in the reviewed documentation. It does not distinguish the effects of closing a window, quitting the app, stopping a daemon, force-quitting, or shutting down the machine. Because those actions can affect a running command differently, do not assume that work will continue or be recoverable after any of them.

For work that must finish, first determine whether the command can be interrupted and whether it has its own resume mechanism. If you cannot verify that the process is independently managed and will remain available, leave umux and the machine running until the work is complete.

Does remote SSH change session persistence?

The README documents SSH panels for remote machines using the local SSH agent and keys on Linux and macOS; it described Windows SSH support as planned for v2.0. That remote-connection feature does not establish that a local umux session daemon exists or that a remote command survives disconnecting umux. See the README and project documentation for the stated platform details.

Which umux does this guidance cover?

It covers the CrystalPlatforms terminal workspace manager described in the linked repository. A separate report dated October 3, 2026 describes a umux 1.7 series with a Storestation daemon and reattachment behavior, but those details are not confirmed by the CrystalPlatforms repository or README. The names alone are not enough to establish that the report describes the same project. Verify the product identity and consult its official release notes before applying those lifecycle claims.
