The UMIDIGI S5 Pro is a genuine 2020 Android phone built around features that were unusual at its price: a notch-free 6.39-inch AMOLED display, motorized 16MP selfie camera, 256GB storage, NFC and the gaming-focused Helio G90T chip. Those strengths remain interesting, but in 2026 its Android 10 starting point, limited documented update history, LTE-only modem and uncertain U.S. carrier activation make it a risky primary phone.
Consider one only when it is very inexpensive, returnable and intended for secondary use, Wi-Fi media, older games or collecting. Verify network service and the condition of the battery and pop-up mechanism before keeping it.
Quick verdict
- Best feature: AMOLED screen combined with 256GB internal storage and a full-screen design.
- Biggest risk: obsolete software and carrier compatibility that cannot be proven from LTE bands alone.
- Consider buying if: you want an inexpensive secondary device and can test it during a return period.
- Avoid if: you need dependable emergency calling, current security patches, 5G or guaranteed U.S. activation.
What the UMIDIGI S5 Pro is
UMIDIGI announced the S5 Pro in April 2020 and planned global sales for May, positioning it as an affordable “flagship.” That is marketing language rather than a claim that it matched contemporary premium phones. Its target was the performance-oriented midrange, alongside phones such as the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Realme 6 Pro. Cosmic Black and Ocean Blue were the listed colors. The official announcement is available at UMIDIGI’s launch notice.
The design priorities were clear: maximize uninterrupted display area with a pop-up camera, provide unusually generous storage, and use a gaming-oriented MediaTek processor. The global and EEA versions have separate firmware histories, so regional identity matters when buying or flashing one.

Display and design
Why the AMOLED panel still stands out
AMOLED provides deeper blacks and stronger contrast than the LCD panels common in similarly priced 2020 phones. FHD+ resolution is appropriate for 6.39 inches, and the pop-up camera leaves the viewing area free of a notch or punch-hole. UMIDIGI lists dark mode and color-temperature adjustment.
There is no verified official basis for calling this a 90Hz or 120Hz display; treat it as a conventional high-resolution panel. The curved-glass rear and 202g weight make it feel substantial, but also increase breakage concerns. No water-resistance certification is listed, and a moving camera makes water protection especially implausible.
Performance and gaming
The 12nm Helio G90T was competitive midrange silicon in 2020. Six gigabytes of LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 storage remain adequate for ordinary Android use, older games and emulation when the software is healthy. UMIDIGI advertises liquid cooling and reports an AnTuTu v8.0.5-OB score of 283,333 versus 225,754 for a Snapdragon 730. That is a manufacturer-supplied result under its stated conditions, not an independent 2026 benchmark; it does not establish current frame rates, sustained temperatures or battery endurance.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Cameras and the pop-up mechanism
Hardware on paper
The main camera is listed as 48MP with a 1/2-inch sensor, f/1.79 aperture, six-element lens and four-in-one pixel binning. A 16MP, 120-degree ultrawide, 5MP depth sensor and 5MP macro camera complete the rear array; the macro camera is advertised for 2cm focusing. The 16MP f/2.0 pop-up camera handles selfies. Night, portrait, panorama, HDR, macro and AI-scene modes are included, and rear video reaches 4K at 30fps.
These specifications do not prove dynamic range, autofocus consistency, stabilization, skin tones, low-light detail or reliable video. Those qualities require testing of the individual handset.
What to inspect on a used phone
- Deploy and retract the selfie camera repeatedly; listen for grinding or hesitation.
- Switch between front and rear cameras and check for freezes, focus errors and exposure problems.
- Inspect for dust around the opening. Cases or screen protectors can obstruct it.
- UMIDIGI claims drop and downward-pressure protection and testing to 300,000 pop-ups. These are factory test claims, not a durability guarantee after years of use.
Moving parts can wear, and replacement mechanisms or repair expertise may be difficult to find. Retraction during a fall does not make the phone impact-proof.
Battery and charging
The 4,680mAh battery is large for a 2020 phone, while the supplied charger is rated at 18W. No standardized test in the available material supports a precise hours or “two-day” claim, and 18W is modest by 2026 standards. Used units are the larger concern: a four-to-six-year-old battery may have substantially less capacity than its label.

Android software and update record
The S5 Pro launched with near-stock Android 10. Official forum material documents Android 10-era firmware through early 2021:
- V1.1: July 2, 2020 software.
- EEA V1.2: November 30, 2020 build with a November 5, 2020 security patch.
- V1.3: January 7, 2021, with fingerprint optimization, APN changes, security updates, bug fixes and system optimization.
See the V1.1 thread, EEA V1.2 thread and V1.3 thread. The documented material reaches early 2021; no current support commitment or modern Android-version upgrade was verified. FOTA was intended for normal updates. SP Flash Tool was for repair or recovery, not a beginner routine: UMIDIGI warns against formatting the flash chip, which can cause serious damage.
U.S. network compatibility
The official list includes LTE bands B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B13, B17, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28A/B, B66, B71 and TDD B34, B38, B39, B40 and B41. UMIDIGI also claims dual-4G VoLTE, qualified for select carriers. The phone has no 5G modem or 5G bands.

Band coverage is not the same as activation. Carrier certification, IMEI databases, VoLTE provisioning, Wi-Fi calling and firmware region can all determine whether calls work. Before buying, obtain the exact model and region, ask the carrier to check the IMEI, and confirm that imported devices are accepted. A marketplace “unlocked” label is not enough.
Use the return period as a network test
- Insert the intended SIM and place an outgoing call.
- Receive a call, then send and receive SMS and MMS.
- Test mobile data in more than one location.
- Check IMS/VoLTE registration where the software exposes it, and test Wi-Fi calling if you need it.
- Verify NFC and Google Wallet, Play Protect certification, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-C, speakers and microphones.
Owner reports include both successful U.S. use and failures involving VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and activation; they are anecdotal, not carrier guarantees. See UMIDIGI community reports and user carrier discussion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage, NFC and box contents
There is 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage and manufacturer-listed microSD support up to 256GB. The 3-choose-2 tray means two Nano-SIMs or one Nano-SIM plus a card, not both dual-SIM and microSD simultaneously.
NFC and Google Pay support are claimed, but current contactless payments also depend on Play Protect certification, region, bank policy and unmodified software. Original box contents were the phone, applied film, case, USB-C cable, USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter, power adapter, SIM tool and quick-start guide. Used listings may omit any of them.

Buying one in 2026
New old stock
UMIDIGI’s product page displays US$269.99, but that is a manufacturer-page price signal, not proof of live inventory, seller fulfillment or warranty. Paying near the original under-$300 positioning is difficult to justify for an Android 10 LTE phone. Check the official product page and insist on a return policy.
Used or refurbished
Condition matters more than the original specification sheet. Confirm exact model/region, battery behavior, pop-up operation, fingerprint enrollment, Play Protect status and carrier activation before the return window closes. Refurbishment should identify what was replaced; “tested” alone does not prove battery health or VoLTE support.
Regional firmware
Global and EEA builds are separate. Do not flash a ROM for the wrong region. If recovery is necessary, follow the model-specific instructions and avoid flash-chip formatting.
Who should consider it—and who should not
Reasonable uses
- Secondary Wi-Fi phone or media player.
- Older games or emulator projects.
- Collector or enthusiast interest in pop-up cameras.
- A very cheap, fully returnable purchase after compatibility testing.
Reasons to pass
- Primary or emergency phone use.
- Mobile banking or security-sensitive work needing current patches.
- Guaranteed U.S. activation, Wi-Fi calling or 5G.
- Modern computational photography or fast charging.
- Any price close to its launch level.
Better modern directions
A current Google Pixel A-series phone generally offers newer software, stronger camera processing and more predictable U.S. support; see the Google Store. Samsung Galaxy A models provide a broader carrier and repair ecosystem through Samsung’s Galaxy A range. Motorola Moto G phones are widely available unlocked via Motorola, though NFC, displays and update policies vary by model. Newer UMIDIGI devices may add newer Android versions or 5G, but verify their carrier certification and support record at UMIDIGI and its download portal.
