The list you need depends on what your server uses and what permissions your role has.
This guide gives you a practical, 2024-ready commands reference: where to find built-in commands, which moderation actions are typically available via bot commands, and the exact command patterns most servers use for music and utilities.

What counts as a Discord command in 2024?
In 2024, the most common command format is slash commands (for example: /nick, /ban, /timeout). These appear in the message composer and usually require specific permissions.
Some servers still use prefix commands (like !play), but many bots have moved to slash commands or hybrid support. Either way, you’ll only see commands that your server allows and that your role can access.

How to find Discord’s built-in commands in your server
You generally don’t need a “master list” for built-in commands—you can view what’s available directly in Discord.
Check slash commands from the composer
Open a text channel, type /, then browse the dropdown. Discord will show command names you have permission to use.
Open “Apps” for integrations and bot-provided commands
Not all commands are truly “built-in.” Bots and integrations register commands per server. Look for the bot or integration in the server’s Apps area.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open your server in Discord.
- Go to the server settings (server name → Server Settings).
- Find Integrations or Apps (wording varies by UI version).
- Locate the bot and note what command style it supports (slash, prefix, both).
Server and channel basics (built-in slash commands)
Built-in commands vary slightly by account permissions and UI rollout, but the core “quality of life” commands are consistent. Below are common built-in-style commands and what they typically do.
/help
Many bots and some integrations expose help via /help (or /commands). If a bot has a documentation command, it’s usually the fastest way to confirm naming and parameters.
/me
Displays an action-style message (traditional “emote” behavior). In many servers, it’s used for short roleplay or status updates.
/nick
Changes your nickname on that server (if you have the permission/role). You’ll typically pick a name string.
/report
Some servers (or safety-integrated setups) allow reporting. Availability depends on your server’s moderation configuration and your role.
/remind
Not always built-in; frequently provided by bots. If you see /remind, verify whether the bot is the source by checking its name in the command picker.

Moderation commands (built-in vs bot)
Discord’s native moderation capabilities mostly come through permissions and automated tools, while command-based moderation is usually handled by bots. Your server admin may have installed a mod bot such as Dyno, MEE6, Carl-bot, Dyno-like setups, or a custom moderation tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Timeout, mute, and communication limits
Most servers implement timeouts (or mutes) with a bot command that targets a user and a duration.
/timeoutor/mute- Often parameters: user, duration (e.g., 10m, 1h, 7d), reason
Kick and ban
Kicking removes a user from the server; banning prevents rejoin. These actions are permission-gated and bot-dependent.
/kick/banand/unban- Common parameters: user, reason
Message removal (purge / clear)
Deleting messages in bulk is a classic bot command category, because it requires elevated permissions and careful logging.
/clear,/purge, or/prune- Common parameters: amount (e.g., 10–100), optional channel scope, optional user filter
Roles: assign, remove, and manage permissions
Many servers use bots for role assignment (self-assign, mod-only changes, verification). Some are slash commands; some are reaction-based.
/roleor/roles(varies by bot)/addrole,/removerole,/giverole
Warnings and logs
If your server tracks discipline, you’ll typically see warning commands with a case ID or reason.
/warn,/warnings,/case,/modlog
Community and safety commands you’ll actually use
These aren’t always “global” Discord commands, but they’re common in many communities and often appear in the command dropdown immediately after the bot is installed.

Suggestion bots usually use /suggest or /submit plus voting controls.
/suggest,/idea,/feedback- Parameters: title, description, category
Ticketing / support queues
Ticket systems are often command-driven for moderators and staff, and sometimes for users too.
/ticket,/support,/open/close,/claim

Music bots almost always follow a recognizable pattern: connect to a voice channel, search/play, pause/resume, skip/stop, volume, and manage a queue. Exact command names vary, but these are the most common patterns.
Platform-agnostic music playback (voice required)
Most bots require you to be in a voice channel. If you run /play while you’re not connected, the bot will respond with an error.
- Join a voice channel.
- Run
/play(or/music play,/playis typical). - Provide a query: a song name, artist, or a URL.
- Use queue controls like
/skip,/pause,/stop.
Common music command names
If your bot is slash-command ready, you’ll often see these exact names.
/play(or/music play)/queue(or/list)/skip/stop/pauseand/resume/volume(often 0–200)/repeat(toggle modes like off/one/all depending on the bot)/shuffle/seek(some bots support timestamp seek)
Utility commands (common bot categories)
Utility bots are the reason many servers feel “complete.” Below are the most common categories and the command names you’ll typically find in 2024.

Moderation utility
In addition to punishment commands, servers often use utilities for formatting and auditing.
/slowmode(rate limiting per channel)/lockand/unlock(channel control)/mute,/timeout(user control)
Search and links
Some bots provide quick lookups: wiki pages, urban definitions, game info, and URL previews.
/wiki(or/search)/urban(urban dictionary style)/movie,/game(varies widely)
Economy and leveling
Economy bots often include shop, balance, daily rewards, and currency sinks.
/balance/daily/shop/inventory/workand/rob(rules vary)
Games and mini-apps
Many servers use lightweight games that happen entirely via messages.
/roll(dice)/rps(rock-paper-scissors)/triviaor/quiz
Webhooks and announcements
Some admin setups use announcement bots that repost content from feeds. You may see commands like /subscribe or /feed.
Bot permissions and why commands fail
Even if the command exists, Discord will block it if the bot lacks permission (or your role lacks permission). This is the #1 reason people claim “commands don’t work.”
Permissions bots commonly need
- Manage Messages (for clear/purge)
- Moderate Members (for kick/ban/timeout)
- View Audit Log (for moderation transparency)
- Connect and Speak (for music)
- Read Message History (for queue and logs, depending on bot)
Role hierarchy gotcha
For moderation actions, a bot’s highest role must sit above the target user’s highest role. If it’s below, bans/timeouts/kicks can fail silently or throw a permission error.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Step 2: Verify the bot is installed and active in that server
- Ask a server admin if the bot is installed (or check server settings → Apps/Integrations).
- Check whether the bot is enabled in the specific channel (some bots require channel opt-in).
- Confirm the bot isn’t disabled by the server’s moderation rules or automod.
Step 3: Check permissions (yours and the bot’s)
- If you can’t run it, your role may not have the required permission (for example, mod-only moderation actions).
- If the bot can’t act, it may lack Moderate Members, Manage Messages, or voice permissions.
Step 4: Reproduce with the smallest valid input
For example, run /play with a direct YouTube URL (if your bot supports it) instead of a complicated search term. If it works with a URL, your issue is likely parsing/search.
Step 5: Test in a different channel
Some communities restrict bot usage to #commands or specific channels. Try a known-allowed text channel.
Common error messages and what to try
| Error text you might see | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Missing Permissions | Bot role can’t perform the action | Enable required permissions for the bot; ensure role hierarchy |
| Command not found | Wrong command style or wrong bot | Try slash-command picker / and confirm bot name |
| Not in a voice channel | Music command requires voice | Join a voice channel, then run play |
| Bot is offline / not responding | Bot restart or outage | Wait a few minutes, then check if the bot is still online in Apps |
| Missing arguments | You skipped a required parameter | Use the command UI fields or rerun with explicit inputs |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every server has the same commands. Commands differ by bots, enabled modules, and channel rules.
- Using the wrong format. Prefix commands won’t work if the bot only supports slash commands.
- Trying moderation actions without role authority. Your role and the bot’s role hierarchy both matter.
- Running music commands from a text channel workflow. Music bots require you to be in voice.
- Ignoring cooldowns and spam protection. Many bots throttle commands to prevent abuse.

FAQs
What is the most universal command to learn first?
Try /help. If your bot supports it, it usually lists all commands and shows required parameters. If it’s not there, check the bot’s documentation or its command picker entries.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why do I see commands in one server but not another?
Because commands are registered per server by the bot or integration, and permissions differ by role. Even the same bot can have different modules enabled across servers.
Are there official Discord command lists for every bot?
No. Bots are third-party software. The reliable method is always: type / and use the command dropdown, then confirm with /help if available.
Do I need to use slash commands?
If a bot offers slash commands, it’s usually the easiest and most reliable option because Discord validates parameters. Prefix commands may still work on some servers, but slash commands are more consistent in 2024.
Why won’t moderation commands work even if I’m a moderator?
Common causes are missing Moderate Members (or equivalent) permission, bot role hierarchy issues, or the bot not having the required permissions in that channel.
