The British Retail Consortium (BRC) and NIQ reported annual UK shop price inflation of 1.4% in September 2026, down from 1.5% in August. That is slower annual inflation, not a fall in shop prices overall: the BRC’s measure shows prices rose 0.1% from August to September.
What the September figures show
The BRC-NIQ Shop Price Monitor covers the period 1–7 September 2026. Its annual rate compares prices with the same period a year earlier; its monthly figures track changes in price levels from the previous month.
| Measure | September 2026 annual change | August 2026 annual change | Three-month average |
|---|---|---|---|
| All shop prices | 1.4% | 1.5% | 1.3% |
| Food | 2.5% | 2.8% | 2.5% |
| Non-food | 0.8% | 0.9% | 0.6% |
These figures are from the BRC’s September release. The overall annual rate was slightly above its three-month average, while food matched its average and non-food was above it.
Did UK shop prices go down in September?
No, not overall. The annual inflation rate eased because prices were rising more slowly than a year earlier, but the BRC’s month-on-month figures show the overall price level increased by 0.1% in September. Food prices fell 0.2% from August, while non-food prices rose 0.2%.

| Category | September change from August |
|---|---|
| All shop prices | +0.1% |
| Food | −0.2% |
| Non-food | +0.2% |
The annual and monthly numbers answer different questions: 1.4% is the change against a year earlier, while +0.1% is the change in the price level against the previous month.
Food inflation remains higher than non-food inflation
Annual food inflation slowed from 2.8% in August to 2.5% in September. Within food, fresh food inflation eased to 2.6% from 3.0%, and ambient food inflation eased to 2.2% from 2.5%. The BRC said fresh food was below its three-month average, while ambient food was above its average.

Annual non-food inflation edged down from 0.9% to 0.8%. The BRC attributed lower prices for back-to-school essentials—including books, stationery, footwear and electricals—to strong discounting. These are explanations offered by the retailer trade body, not separately measured causal findings.
Why did shop price inflation ease?
The BRC pointed to retailer competition and promotions. It said promotions helped reduce meat and dairy prices, while poor harvests across Europe pushed fruit prices up. High global commodity prices kept chocolate and confectionery prices elevated. In non-food, discounting on back-to-school items contributed to lower prices.

Helen Dickinson, the BRC’s chief executive, said competition and promotions were helping deliver value, while harvest and commodity pressures affected some food prices. Mike Watkins, NIQ’s head of retailer and business insight, said promotions and some price cuts were helping keep inflation lower than a year earlier. His comments about tighter household budgeting in the fourth quarter and retailers absorbing costs are expectations, not established outcomes.

It does not mean every shopper’s bill rose by exactly 1.4%. It is an annual change in a selected index of shop prices, not a calculation of any one household’s spending. A household’s own change depends on what it buys, where it shops, how much it buys and the prices available to it.

The BRC says its monitor covers 500 frequently purchased food and non-food items, sold online and in stores. NIQ compiles the data. The methodology describes monthly collection in the same stores across five large urban areas, with around 6,500–7,000 price points per period; product classes are weighted using household expenditure data. Those figures describe the index design, not the September inflation result.
The BRC presents the monitor as an indicator of the direction of selected shop-price changes, published ahead of official ONS statistics. It is not the ONS Consumer Prices Index (CPI), does not cover all household costs such as housing and services, and cannot establish how a complete household budget changed. See the BRC’s Shop Price Monitor methodology for the scope and approach.
