There is no reliable published figure for how long a Google Nest thermostat typically lasts. Owner reports range from a suspected failure after about four years to first-generation units still working close to ten years. Those accounts show that experiences vary; they do not establish an average lifespan or predict how long any one thermostat will work.
What owners report about Nest thermostat lifespan
In one Reddit discussion, the person who started the thread said their thermostat stopped sending a cooling signal after four years, and that support suspected a hardware failure. Other commenters in the same discussion said their first-generation thermostats were still working after nearly ten years; another described a third-generation unit in service since around 2015.
These are individual, self-selected accounts—not a representative survey or a controlled reliability study. They cannot tell you the odds of failure at a particular age, so averaging them would be misleading. The evidence available here does not establish a typical Nest thermostat service life.
What “lasts” can mean for a smart thermostat
It helps to separate three questions that can be mistaken for one another:

- Does it still control heating and cooling? A thermostat may continue working at the wall even if another function has a problem.
- Does it still connect? Wi-Fi or app access can fail independently of local control. One owner account about an early-generation unit described it as still operating locally but inaccessible through apps; that is an anecdote, not confirmation of a general Google support policy. - Can it be repaired or replaced under applicable coverage? That depends on the exact model, purchase location, warranty terms, diagnosis and repair options.
A connectivity problem alone does not prove the thermostat has reached the end of its physical life. Conversely, a device that still appears online may have a power, wiring or HVAC-control fault.
Warranty coverage is not a lifespan estimate
Nest’s limited warranty states one year of coverage for Nest Thermostat E and two years for other products covered by that page. It describes additional time for certain eligible Nest Pro installations: an extra two years for Nest Thermostat E or three years for a Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Protect, subject to the stated conditions. These are coverage periods, not predictions that a device will fail when coverage expires or will necessarily last for that many years. Terms can vary by product and country, so check the warranty that applies to your purchase.

The warranty page says batteries are generally consumable parts outside warranty coverage unless a qualifying materials or workmanship defect caused the damage. For safety and repair guidance, consult Google’s Safety & Regulatory Guide for Nest Thermostat. It specifies battery-handling rules for Nest Thermostat, advises using the specified battery and replacing batteries at the same time, and says repairs should be handled by Google or an authorized service provider. It warns that unauthorized repairs or modifications may damage the device or affect warranty coverage.
Low-battery or Wi-Fi trouble does not identify the cause
Some owners of third-generation thermostats have described low-battery alerts and Wi-Fi trouble after roughly five to seven years in a Google Nest Community thread. Those reports involve particular devices and circumstances; they do not show that batteries normally fail at that age or that one cause explains every symptom.

If a thermostat is acting up, first note what is actually affected: local heating or cooling control, app access, Wi-Fi, a battery alert, or visible damage. For symptoms involving wiring, power or HVAC operation, seek diagnosis from an appropriately qualified professional or Google-authorized service provider. Do not assume an age-related failure based on a single alert or connection problem.

- Identify the exact model and generation. Find the model information in the thermostat or its app, then check the warranty terms for your purchase location.
- Separate control from connectivity. Establish whether heating and cooling control still works at the thermostat, and whether the issue is limited to Wi-Fi or app access.
- Check coverage and service options. Review the applicable warranty terms and use Google or an authorized provider for repair guidance where appropriate.
- Compare the full cost of repair and replacement. Include diagnosis and installation if needed; the anecdotes above do not establish whether replacement parts are available or what a repair will cost.
- Check compatibility before choosing a replacement. Confirm that the model suits your HVAC system and installation preferences. Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat product information sheet describes the fourth-generation model, but the evidence here does not compare its reliability with other thermostats or establish that it will last longer.
Age alone is not a reason to replace a thermostat that is working reliably. If you have already decided that replacement is necessary, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat is one model to compare, after checking current availability, compatibility, warranty and installation requirements.
