A UK homeowner says water flow at most indoor taps fell after a new hot-water cylinder was installed, affecting hot and cold alike. That timing makes the recent pipework and supply worth checking, but the account alone cannot identify a fault or show that a booster is needed. Ask for measured flow and pressure checks before approving equipment.
What the homeowner reported
In a post to r/ukplumbing, a homeowner said a boiler and radiators were removed, space heating and cooling switched to air conditioning, and a 180-litre hot-water cylinder installed in the loft. They reported that flow had been usable before the work but fell noticeably at most indoor taps immediately afterward, including the kitchen and an upstairs bathroom basin. They said both hot and cold were affected about equally, two outdoor taps seemed unchanged, and hot water continued to heat normally. The Cool Down summarized the account, but neither source documents an independent inspection. The Cool Down’s report and the original subreddit post are accounts, not verified measurements.
The homeowner asked: “Could something in the new pipework or valve arrangement explain the drop on both hot and cold?” They also wrote: “Before spending money on that, I’d like to understand why things became noticeably worse straight after the installation.” Those are reasonable questions, but the reported pattern does not establish the cause.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
A change beginning immediately after work is a good reason to have the changed installation and supply path reviewed. Since the reported drop involves several indoor outlets and both temperature sides, it makes sense to document the pattern rather than assume one tap is at fault. But similar changes in hot and cold flow do not, by themselves, prove that the cylinder is faulty or point to any single cause.

Restrictions in valves, filters, or changed pipework are possibilities mentioned in coverage of the case, not confirmed findings. The sources do not provide comparable flow measurements, pressure readings, an inspection, or details of the cylinder arrangement. They also do not establish how often this kind of problem follows installation work.
What to ask the installer to measure and inspect
Before buying a booster or replacing a tap, ask the installer to explain the findings behind their recommendation. A useful check should record the affected outlets and compare measurements under comparable conditions, rather than rely only on the impression that flow feels weaker.

- List which indoor taps changed and which did not, including whether the symptom occurs on hot, cold, or both.
- Ask for measured flow at representative affected outlets and an explanation of how the readings were taken and compared.
- Ask whether static and dynamic pressure were checked, and what the readings indicate.
- Ask the installer to inspect stopcocks, valves, filters, and any shared supply path or pipework altered during the work.
- Request the reason a booster is being proposed, including how the measured supply condition and the system’s suitability support that choice.
These are diagnostic requests, not a diagnosis of this homeowner’s installation. If the explanation is unclear, consider a qualified local plumbing inspection or independent second opinion; check credentials and any referral arrangement before engaging a service.
Rules to check if the cylinder is unvented
The homeowner’s account does not say whether the cylinder is an unvented hot-water system. That detail matters for compliance. In England, the current Approved Document G, 2024 amended edition, covers hot-water safety and systems. It treats installation of an unvented hot-water system as notifiable building work. Prior notification is not necessary when the installer is registered with a competent-person scheme for unvented systems; in that case the installer self-certifies, and the owner or occupier is to receive a building-regulations certificate of compliance.

If the system is unvented, ask whether the installer was registered for this work and request the compliance certificate. If you are unsure whether approval or notification was needed, government guidance on building-regulations approval advises contacting the relevant building-control body. The precise requirements depend on the work and jurisdiction. Approved Document G is England guidance, with the scope for excepted energy buildings in Wales specified on its page; do not assume its rules cover every UK jurisdiction.

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require fittings to be suitable in quality and standard, appropriate to their circumstances, and installed in a workmanlike manner. Their notification provisions list certain pumps or boosters drawing more than 12 litres per minute. No proposed pump or flow rate is identified in this case, so that threshold alone cannot establish whether a particular booster would need notification.

A recommendation to install a booster is not evidence that one is the right fix. Have the supply condition, system suitability, pump’s rated flow, and applicable notification or compliance requirements explained before agreeing to equipment. The reported account supplies no product recommendation or measurements on which to choose one.
