President Donald Trump said he had done “a very bad job” explaining how well he believes the U.S. economy is performing. In context, he was criticizing his own communication—not admitting that he had run the economy badly.
What Trump said—and what he meant
At a White House Hispanic Heritage Month event on September 30, 2026, Trump said: “I’m very proud of the job we’ve done. We’ve done a job, but I’ve done a very bad job of explaining. I saw Rachel talking about, I’ve done a very bad job of explaining how good the country is doing. We’re doing better than any country in the world economically.” Reuters’ transcript of the event also records him describing an “extremely poor job of promotion” alongside an “extremely great job of running the country.”
So the phrase “a very bad job” was about explaining and promoting his claimed economic record. Trump was not conceding that he had done a poor job managing the economy. His assertion that the country was doing better than any other, however, was his own characterization—not a conclusion established by the remarks themselves.
Why the remark drew attention
The comments came as Trump prepared for a 32-day campaign blitz ahead of the November 3, 2026 midterm elections. Reuters described the political backdrop as including high gasoline prices and weak economic approval. That context helps explain why economic messaging mattered during the campaign, but it does not establish that any single measure caused voters’ dissatisfaction. What the available economic indicators show
Two reported indicators offer different, limited views of conditions in September 2026. One concerns employment; the other reflects households’ expectations. Neither alone settles whether the economy was doing well overall.

Brendan Boyle, the ranking Democrat on the House Budget Committee, responded in the committee’s October 2 statement: “Families who can’t afford groceries or housing don’t need it explained to them.” That is a political critic’s comment about household costs, not an independent statistical finding.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The remarks establish what Trump meant by “a very bad job”: he said he had failed to communicate what he regarded as strong economic results. The two indicators provide context that complicates an unqualified claim that the economy was doing exceptionally well, but they do not amount to a comprehensive economic scorecard. They cover different things—employment and surveyed expectations—and neither alone establishes the overall state of the economy or explains why people felt dissatisfied.
