Choose a USB external drive if you mainly need portable storage plugged directly into one computer or a straightforward extra copy of files. Choose a UGREEN NAS if you want a shared, network-accessible home for files used by multiple devices or people—and are prepared to buy the drives separately and maintain a networked device.
The right comparison is the full cost and upkeep of a NAS with its drives against the external drive, plus whether either option fits into a separate backup plan. A NAS is not automatically a backup.
How the two setups work
USB external drive: storage attached to a host
A USB drive connects directly to a computer or another compatible host. That makes it a natural fit for carrying files, adding space to one computer, or keeping a separate copy that you can disconnect when it is not in use. Access generally depends on having the drive physically connected to a device that can read it.
NAS: storage reached over a network
A network-attached storage device connects to your network, so supported devices can reach shared files without plugging the storage directly into each one. UGREEN describes its NASync DXP4800 as offering centralized storage, automatic backups, and remote access; those are manufacturer-described features, and what you can use depends on the product’s software and your setup. See UGREEN’s DXP4800 listing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the UGREEN NASync DXP4800 includes—and what it does not
The DXP4800 is a diskless, four-bay NAS: storage drives are a separate purchase. UGREEN’s listing states, “Storage hard drives are not included and need to be purchased separately.” It names Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba among compatible third-party drive makers and directs buyers to its model-specific compatibility list, so check that list before purchasing drives.
UGREEN’s DXP4800 manual, published April 12, 2025 and updated April 13, 2025, specifies four 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drive bays and two M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD slots. It lists JBOD, Basic, and RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 storage modes. These are DXP4800 specifications, not features that should be assumed for every UGREEN NAS. The manual also identifies ext4 and Btrfs for internal storage. See the UGREEN DXP4800 manual and downloads.

The product listing advertises “up to 136TB” and a 1GB transfer in under two seconds. These are UGREEN’s claims for this model, not independent capacity or speed comparisons; actual usable capacity and transfer time depend on the chosen drives, configuration, network, and client equipment.
Compare the setups against your needs
| What matters | USB external drive | UGREEN NASync DXP4800 |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Buy the drive; current prices are not established here. | Buy the enclosure and compatible drives separately; current prices are not established here. |
| Access | Direct connection to a host device. | Network access for supported devices and users. |
| Portability | Designed to be physically unplugged and carried. | Typically stays connected to the network where files are shared. |
| Capacity and expansion | Depends on the drive you buy; adding capacity may mean adding or replacing drives. | Four SATA bays and two M.2 NVMe slots on this model; total capacity depends on compatible drives and storage configuration. |
| Setup and upkeep | Usually a simpler plug-in workflow; host and file-system compatibility still matter. | Requires drive selection, network setup, configuration, and ongoing device and backup upkeep. |
| Transfer path | USB connection between drive and host. | Network connection, with speed limited by the NAS, drives, network, and client. |
| Backup protection | Can serve as a separate copy if files are actually copied and the drive is kept safe. | Can centralize files and support storage redundancy, but does not replace a separate backup. |
What speeds and capacity claims mean in practice
The DXP4800 manual lists two 2.5GbE network ports. It also lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports with theoretical interface rates up to 10Gbps, USB 3.2 Gen 1 up to 5Gbps, and USB 2.0 up to 480Mbps. These figures describe interfaces, not guaranteed sustained file-copy speeds. The drive, network wiring and equipment, connected computer, file sizes, and workload all affect the result.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Likewise, a USB drive’s interface rating does not by itself tell you how quickly a particular file transfer will finish. For a NAS, a fast interface cannot overcome a slower link elsewhere in the path. UGREEN’s “1GB in less than two seconds” statement is a vendor claim, not a promise that every user will see that result.
RAID is not a backup
RAID can help an array continue operating through certain drive failures, depending on the RAID mode and the number and type of failures. It does not protect files from accidental deletion, ransomware, theft, fire, or other events that affect the whole system. UGREEN’s FAQ for a different product, the DH4300 Plus, puts the limitation plainly: “RAID protects against drive failure only. Accidental deletion, ransomware, and disasters affect all drives simultaneously. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, 2 media types, 1 off-site.” That principle applies when planning storage protection; the DH4300 Plus FAQ should not be read as a specification for the DXP4800. See UGREEN’s DH4300 Plus FAQ.

If you choose a NAS, plan for a separate, tested backup—for example, an external drive disconnected when not in use and/or an off-site copy. If you choose a USB drive, do not treat the only copy of important files as protected just because it is on an external device.
