UFO means an unidentified flying object; UAP is NASA’s current term, expanded as “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena.” Both labels describe something that has not been identified. Neither says what caused it, and neither is evidence of extraterrestrial life.
What do UFO and UAP mean?
UFO
UFO is the familiar abbreviation for “unidentified flying object.” It describes an observation whose identity is unknown; it does not establish that the object is a craft, much less identify its origin. NASA’s published materials cited here do not set out a separate formal NASA definition of “UFO.”

UAP
NASA uses UAP for “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena,” the broader wording aligned with the National Defense Authorization Act. The term is not limited to things already understood to be aerial. In practice, NASA’s independent study was largely focused on phenomena observed in the sky.

“Unidentified aerial phenomena” is the older expansion of UAP and remains apt when discussing reports or studies specifically about observations in the sky. NASA describes UAP as observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena. These usages reflect the NASA and U.S. government sources cited here; organizations may use the terms differently. NASA’s UAP FAQs and its 2023 independent study report explain the terminology and its history.

What is the difference between UFO and UAP?
The main difference is usage and scope, not what the label proves. UFO is the familiar public phrase. UAP is the term NASA currently uses, with “anomalous phenomena” broadening the older “aerial phenomena” wording. A report called a UFO or UAP is still an observation awaiting identification; the name does not explain its cause.
| Term | Meaning or usage | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| UFO | Unidentified flying object; familiar public wording. | Origin, nature, or whether it is extraterrestrial. |
| UAP | NASA’s current expansion: Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. | That the observation is alien, technological, or beyond known science. |
| Unidentified aerial phenomena | Older expansion of UAP; useful for observations in the sky. | A confirmed explanation for the observation. |
Does “unidentified” mean extraterrestrial?
No. “Unidentified” means the available information has not established what was observed. NASA says it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and that there is no evidence UAP are extraterrestrial, as stated in its UAP FAQs. An unresolved report should be described as unresolved, not as evidence of alien technology.

Why can a sighting or video remain unidentified?
Many reports are incidental observations rather than measurements collected for scientific analysis. NASA’s study report notes that investigators may lack sensor calibration, instrument details, and other metadata. Without such context, it can be difficult to determine an object’s size, motion, or nature. A photograph or video alone does not necessarily answer those questions.

- Calibration and sensor details: Analysts need to know how an instrument recorded the event and whether its measurements can be trusted.
- Camera or platform motion: Movement of the camera, aircraft, or other sensor platform can affect apparent motion.
- Context and corroboration: Environmental data and independent observations can help test an interpretation.
- Reproducibility: A proposed explanation is stronger when others can examine the evidence and check it independently.
The NASA study report puts the scientific standard this way: “In science, data need to be reproducible, and hypotheses falsifiable—the scientific method works by systematically analyzing data with the intent to falsify a hypothesis.” NASA UAP Independent Study Team Final Report.

What does NASA’s GoFast analysis show?
NASA’s 2023 report analyzed the GoFast video as an example of why apparent movement can mislead. The sensor platform’s motion affects how the object appears to move. For the interval analyzed, the report estimates an average object speed of about 40 mph, consistent with wind at the estimated altitude. It says the object could be drifting with the wind, while noting that more data would be needed for a firmer conclusion. This is an analysis of one recording, not a universal explanation for UAP footage. Read the report’s GoFast analysis.

NASA’s independent study team published its final report on September 14, 2023. NASA describes it as a roadmap for possible future data collection and scientific study, not a review of past UAP incidents. NASA’s FAQ says 16 individuals participated and the study took nine months; those figures describe that study, not UAP generally. NASA’s UAP page provides the study context.
