The UEFA Nations League is a men’s national-team competition divided into leagues and groups. In 2026/27, teams play group matches for points and league movement; the top two teams in each League A group also qualify for two-legged quarter-finals, followed by a four-team finals tournament. Promotion and relegation depend on a team’s league and finish, and this edition has transitional rules that differ from a simple “top up, bottom down” system.
How the 2026/27 league phase works
The 2026/27 edition has four leagues. Leagues A, B and C each have four groups of four teams. League D has two groups of three or four. In each group, teams meet home and away, so each side plays the other teams in its group twice. A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat zero. UEFA’s regulations set out tie-break criteria, beginning with results among the teams level on points before moving to wider group criteria.

UEFA scheduled the league phase for September to November 2026. Matchdays 1–4 were set for 24 September–6 October, with matchdays 5–6 scheduled for 12–17 November. These are fixture windows, not results; standings change as matches are played. See UEFA’s 2026/27 overview and the competition regulations.
How promotion and relegation work in 2026/27
Movement between leagues is based on both group position and specified play-offs. The 2026/27 system is transitional: UEFA is preparing to move to three leagues of 18 teams from 2028/29, so it should not be treated as the rule for earlier editions or reduced to a universal rule that every group winner goes up and every last-place team goes down.
#1 Best Overall
- Promotion: League B and League C group winners move up one league. All League D teams are promoted to League C.
- League A relegation: The two lowest-ranked teams among the fourth-placed finishers go down automatically. Other specified League A finishers take part in League A/B play-offs against League B runners-up.
- League B/C movement: League C runners-up and League B fourth-placed teams contest League B/C play-offs. League B third-placed teams stay in League B; League C third- and fourth-placed teams stay in League C.
Because the system uses cross-group rankings and play-off routes to balance league sizes, a team’s group position alone may not tell the whole story. UEFA’s edition overview gives the exact positions and routes for 2026/27. The overview schedules League A/B and League B/C play-offs for 25–30 March 2027, and League C/D play-offs for 23–28 March 2028.
How a team reaches the Nations League final
The finals route begins in League A. The four group winners and four runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals. Group winners are seeded and drawn against runners-up from different groups. Each quarter-final is a two-leg tie, played home and away; the team with the higher aggregate score advances.
The semi-finals, third-place match and final are single-leg matches. A League A group win therefore earns a quarter-final place, not the title itself. A team must progress through the knockout rounds to become champion. UEFA scheduled the 2026/27 final tournament for 9–13 June 2027. Its overview, last updated 3 October 2026, said the host had not yet been confirmed.
What UEFA plans to change from 2028/29
UEFA announced a planned format with three leagues of 18 teams from 2028/29, generally divided into three groups of six in each league. Teams are planned to play six matches against five different opponents. With 55 participating teams, League C is to include one group of seven, and its calendar is to start one international window earlier. UEFA said details would be fine-tuned, so this is an announced plan rather than a guarantee that every implementation detail is final. UEFA says the Nations League was designed to reduce “meaningless friendlies” and give national teams competitive fixtures against similarly ranked opponents. That is the organizer’s stated purpose, not a measured finding about the results of the format. The leagues and groups also give teams a route to move between levels and provide a qualification path to the finals.
