UDOW targets three times the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s return for a single trading day, before fees and expenses—not three times the Dow’s return over October. Its daily reset makes any multi-day result dependent on both the index’s path and its volatility. The October watchlist framing is not a forecast or a recommendation to trade.
What UDOW is
ProShares UltraPro Dow30 (NYSE Arca: UDOW) is a leveraged exchange-traded fund that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, corresponding to three times the daily performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The objective applies from one fund net asset value (NAV) calculation to the next. ProShares describes UDOW’s daily objective on its fund page.
UDOW is not simply a basket of Dow shares with each holding tripled. The fund uses financial instruments, including swap agreements and futures contracts, and rebalances daily toward its target. Its benchmark is the DJIA, an index of 30 large U.S. companies that excludes transportation-industry and utility companies. The index’s selected constituents are weighted by share price; S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC maintains it, and constituents can change.
What “3× daily” means—and what it does not
The 3× target applies to one day only. The ProShares summary prospectus says the fund does not seek three times the index’s daily performance “for any period other than a day.” It does not promise three times the Dow’s weekly, monthly, or October return.

For more than one day, returns compound. The sequence of gains and losses matters, not just where the index starts and ends. As a result, UDOW’s cumulative return can be materially higher or lower than three times the DJIA’s cumulative return. Smaller index moves and higher volatility tend to make the result worse relative to the simple 3× cumulative figure; larger moves and lower volatility can improve it. Neither direction is guaranteed.
A simplified daily-rebalancing example
Daily rebalancing changes the fund’s exposure as its net assets change. Direxion illustrates the mechanics using a hypothetical daily 3× bull fund—not UDOW’s actual positions. Starting with $100 million in net assets and $300 million of exposure, a 1% index gain raises net assets to $103 million and exposure to $303 million; restoring 300% exposure requires adding $6 million. After a 1% index decline, net assets would be $97 million and exposure $297 million; restoring the target requires removing $6 million. Direxion explains the daily-target mechanics.

Why an October watchlist needs a daily lens
A watchlist can help keep a product’s mechanics and risks in view, but the calendar month does not change UDOW’s one-day objective. To assess a holding period, a reader needs current index and fund data and a clear view of how long the position may be held. This article does not establish October 2026 market conditions, UDOW’s October performance, or a bullish or bearish case.
For context rather than a forecast, ProShares reported that the DJIA’s annualized historical volatility was 14.79% for the five-year period ended May 31, 2026; its highest May-to-May volatility rate in that period was 17.52%, for the year ended May 31, 2023. The index’s annualized total return over the five-year period ended May 31, 2026 was 10.18%. These historical figures do not predict future volatility or returns.

The prospectus also includes a hypothetical one-year illustration: with a 0% index return and 50% annualized volatility, the estimated fund return is -52.8%. This is an illustration, not actual performance or a forecast; it assumes no dividends, expenses, or borrowing costs.
Risks to understand before considering UDOW
- Leverage can magnify losses. The prospectus warns that if the index approaches a 33% loss at any point during a day, an investor could lose the entire investment.
- Multi-day results can disappoint even when the index is flat or rising. Volatility and daily compounding can erode returns; the prospectus says an investor can lose money even when the index rises.
- Derivatives add risks and costs. Swaps and futures involve risks such as counterparty and correlation risk, and derivative-related costs reduce returns.
- Market price can differ from NAV. UDOW shares trade on an exchange and can be priced above or below NAV. Intraday market-price performance can also differ from the fund’s NAV-to-NAV daily target.
- It is not a complete investment program. The prospectus says the fund may not be suitable for all investors.
Fund expenses and what the expense ratio leaves out
UDOW’s summary prospectus lists a 0.75% management fee, 0.19% in other expenses, and 0.94% in total annual operating expenses. It also describes an agreement to waive fees or reimburse expenses to keep specified expenses at or below 0.95% through September 30, 2027, subject to the agreement’s terms. Transaction and financing costs associated with securities and derivatives are not included in the expense table. Check the latest prospectus for current terms before comparing costs.

What to verify on an October watchlist
Before drawing conclusions about UDOW for a particular October, check current fund and market information rather than inferring performance from the daily target. Relevant items include NAV and market-price performance, holdings, trading volume, and any premium or discount to NAV. Also review the latest prospectus and consider the intended holding period, daily monitoring needs, and the fund’s compounding behavior in volatile markets.
