Did natural gas storage surpass forecasts?
That claim is not established by the official report. EIA reported the actual weekly change—an injection of 64 Bcf—but did not provide a market-consensus estimate for the same report week. Without a contemporaneous estimate to compare against, the result cannot be called a verified forecast beat.
In market commentary, an injection larger than expected can be described as a bearish surprise because it means more gas entered storage than traders anticipated. That interpretation depends on a comparable forecast; the reported actual alone cannot establish whether a surprise occurred.
How much natural gas is in storage?
EIA’s report, released October 1, 2026, put Lower 48 working-gas inventories at 3,415 Bcf for the week ending September 25. “Working gas” is the portion of underground stocks available for withdrawal, rather than the full physical capacity of storage facilities. The figures below distinguish the observed weekly report from a later seasonal projection.

Is storage above the five-year average?
Yes, nationally: AGA’s October 1 summary reported total stocks 2.4% above the five-year average, while also noting that stocks were nearly 4% below year-ago levels. Those comparisons use different reference points, so they are not contradictory.
The national total also masks regional and storage-type variation. AGA reported that South Central salt storage was 15.5% below its five-year average and 27.3% below year-ago levels. Those figures are AGA’s regional comparison, not a national EIA percentage. EIA’s weekly report includes estimates by region, which help show where the aggregate cushion is concentrated.

AGA also said weekly injections had been below the five-year average build for seven consecutive weeks. That describes the pace of recent additions, not the total inventory level: stocks can remain above an average even when recent weekly builds are smaller than usual.
What does storage mean for natural gas prices going into winter?
Storage is one input into the winter supply picture, not a price forecast. Larger inventories can provide a cushion when heating demand rises, but the national balance does not show how easily gas can reach every region. Local storage conditions, production, consumption, weather, and pipeline constraints also matter; the figures in this report do not quantify their effect on prices.

The latest EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook, published in September 2026, projected 3,969 Bcf in storage on October 31. EIA said that forecast was 5% above the 2021–2025 average and 1% above October 2025. This is a dated end-of-injection-season projection, not the September 25 observed inventory, and it should not be treated as a guarantee of winter supply or prices.
The national projection and the South Central salt-storage deficit describe different things: one is a forecast for total Lower 48 stocks at a future date; the other is a regional, storage-type comparison reported by AGA. A national surplus can coexist with tighter conditions in a particular region or type of facility.

Why the outlook changed from August
EIA’s August 2026 outlook had projected 3,985 Bcf for October, higher than the September projection. In its August 11 press release, EIA attributed that earlier higher-stock outlook to increased production and reduced LNG feedgas demand associated with facility maintenance. Those were EIA’s stated drivers for the August forecast; they should not be read as a demonstrated explanation for every weekly inventory movement or as the current September forecast.
In that same release, EIA Administrator Tristan Abbey said, “More natural gas in inventories in the fall season provides a cushion for increased heating-related consumption during the winter.”

What to watch in the next storage update
The EIA report listed October 8, 2026, as the next scheduled release after its October 1 report; release schedules can change. To interpret that update, compare the new national total with both the year-ago level and five-year average, check regional balances, and distinguish the measured injection from any separately attributed market-consensus estimate.
