Typing speed is usually reported in words per minute (WPM), but the number is only meaningful when you know how the test counts words, handles errors, and measures accuracy. Many tests use five keystrokes as one “word,” so WPM is a normalized text-entry rate—not a count of ordinary dictionary words.
How typing speed is calculated
Typing.com calculates WPM by dividing the number of characters typed by five, then dividing by the test time in minutes: WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Its five-keystroke convention includes letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces. The service describes the resulting figure as gross WPM: errors are not deducted. Typing.com explains its calculation and accuracy rules.

That is one provider’s method, not a universal formula. A different approach appears in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s typing-test document: gross WPM divides all words typed by minutes, while net WPM divides correctly typed words by minutes. The latter adjusts the speed score for errors. The CBSE document gives its formulas and examination criteria.

Why accuracy belongs beside WPM
Speed and accuracy are separate measures. Typing.com describes its own gross-WPM result with the phrase “WPM measures speed alone”: because errors are not deducted from that WPM calculation, the speed figure does not tell you how much of the prompt was typed correctly. Its accuracy figure is calculated separately by estimating an error rate, rounding it to a whole percentage, and subtracting that from 100. Other tests may use different accuracy rules.
Pearson’s sample Versant Writing report also presents typing speed and typing accuracy separately. It cautions that relationships observed in its studies do not guarantee a score on another test or evaluation. Treat a result as evidence about performance on that particular assessment, not a promise of the same performance elsewhere. Pearson’s sample report shows how the measures are presented.

When two WPM scores are comparable
A comparison is most useful when the tests use similar procedures. Check these details before concluding that one score is faster than another:
- Scoring rule: gross versus net WPM, and character-based versus word-based scoring.
- Error handling: whether errors count, whether corrected errors remain in the score, and how unfinished words are treated.
- Text: a passage and random words may differ in difficulty or familiarity.
- Language and conventions: the five-keystroke approximation is a convention used for text entry; do not assume tests in different languages apply identical rules.
- Duration and format: a short test captures a brief performance, while a longer one shows performance across more time.
Typing.com offers one-, three-, and five-minute tests. A British Council-hosted research document describes two two-minute tests. These examples establish that test lengths vary; they do not establish one universally best duration or quantify how much a person’s score will change with a longer test. Typing.com lists its timed test options. The British Council-hosted document describes its two-minute tests and five-keystroke convention.

- QWERTY KEYBOARD DESIGN: This keyboard-shaped pop fidget toy features a familiar QWERTY layout with letters, numbers and common keyboard characters printed directly on the pressable key bubbles.
- LETTERS, NUMBERS AND SYMBOLS: The printed keyboard content gives children a hands-on way to explore alphabet keys, number keys, key positions and commonly used symbols while pressing and identifying each bubble.
- KEYBOARD RECOGNITION PRACTICE: Children can locate specific letters, spell simple words, follow the alphabet, identify numbers and become more familiar with the arrangement of keys through screen-free play.
- FLEXIBLE SILICONE DESIGN: The soft silicone keyboard is lightweight, reusable and easy to carry. Press the bubbles from one side, turn the toy over and continue playing from the other side.
- HOME, CLASSROOM AND TRAVEL USE: Suitable for individual activities, parent-child games, classroom learning, homeschool lessons, computer introductions, desk play, travel and everyday hands-on entertainment.
Because the CBSE formula distinguishes gross from net speed and Typing.com reports gross speed, results from those methods are not directly interchangeable. Unless the scoring rules and test conditions match, treat cross-test comparisons as approximate.

There is no universal cutoff or general-population average established by the sources cited here. The CBSE document lists criteria of 35 WPM for English and 30 WPM for Hindi for a particular examination. Those are exam-specific criteria, not general averages or universal workplace requirements.

If you need a target, use the requirement for the particular job, course, or exam, then confirm its language, scoring method, accuracy rules, and current validity. A sample score report that displays speed and accuracy is not a benchmark table for all typists.

How to report your result clearly
When sharing a WPM score, include enough context for someone else to understand what it measures. For example: “I scored 48 gross WPM on a three-minute English passage test; the test reported 96% accuracy and did not deduct errors from WPM.” Use the test’s own labels and rules rather than assuming that every provider calculates the same way.
Quick Recap
- Name the test or assessment.
- State the language, test duration, and whether it used a passage or another format.
- Say whether the score is gross or net, if the test specifies that.
- Report accuracy separately and explain the test’s error treatment when it is known.
