TypeScript adds a static typechecker to JavaScript: it checks your code during development, before the program runs. Start with JavaScript if you are new to programming; if you already know another language, you can begin with TypeScript’s everyday syntax and build from there.
What is TypeScript?
TypeScript is a static typechecker for JavaScript programs. It helps describe the kinds of values your code expects and can flag type-related mistakes before you run the program. It does not replace JavaScript’s runtime behavior, and passing type checks does not guarantee that a program has no bugs.

For example, a type annotation can tell the checker that a value should be a string. The annotation helps during development; it is not, by itself, a runtime check that an outside value really is a string.

If you are new to programming
Learn JavaScript’s basic runtime concepts first, then add TypeScript. The official TypeScript Handbook recommends introductory JavaScript resources for readers with no JavaScript experience. TypeScript builds on JavaScript, so understanding how JavaScript values, functions, and execution work makes the type system easier to learn.

If you already know another programming language
You can start with TypeScript’s language-specific introduction and learn the JavaScript details as they arise. The Handbook’s progressive walkthrough is aimed at everyday programmers; its deeper reference pages are more useful once terms and concepts are familiar.
How should a beginner learn TypeScript?
- Get the JavaScript context. Learn how values, functions, arrays, objects, and classes behave at runtime, especially if JavaScript is new to you.
- Start with everyday types. Practice
string,number, andboolean, and notice when TypeScript can infer a type without an annotation. - Type function contracts. Add parameter types and understand what a function returns.
- Handle more than one possible type. Use unions and narrow them with checks before using a value.
- Describe object shapes. Learn how object types express the properties code expects.
- Move on to generics and classes. Use generics when a function should preserve relationships between input and output types, then study how types apply to class members.
The Handbook is designed as a progressive walkthrough, while its reference material goes deeper into specific language topics. It describes the walkthrough as concise enough to read in a few hours; that is a design goal, not a guaranteed completion time for every learner.
How do basic TypeScript types and annotations work?
Type annotations make a value’s expected type explicit. The common starting types are string, number, and boolean:

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

let userName: string = "Mina";
let itemsInCart: number = 3;
let isReady: boolean = true;
You do not need to annotate every variable. When a value is initialized in a way that makes its type clear, TypeScript can infer that type. Annotations are most useful when they clarify an intended contract, such as a function parameter or a value whose type is not obvious from its initialization.
How do you add types to a function?
Annotate a parameter to say what the function accepts. TypeScript can also infer a return type from the function body; an explicit return annotation can make the contract clearer.
function greet(name: string): string {
return `Hello, ${name}!`;
}
greet("Mina");
Here, name: string describes the input, and : string describes the returned value. Passing a number where a string is expected is a type-related mistake the checker can report during development. The function still runs according to JavaScript’s runtime rules when executed.
What is a union type, and what does narrowing mean?
A union type says that a value may be one of several types. For instance, an identifier might be either a string or a number:

function formatId(id: string | number): string {
if (typeof id === "number") {
return `ID-${id}`;
}
return id.toUpperCase();
}
Before the check, id could be either member of the union. Inside the number branch, TypeScript narrows it to number; after that branch, the remaining possibility is string. This is why code should check a union value before using an operation that only makes sense for one member.
TypeScript understands common JavaScript checks, including typeof, equality comparisons, and Array.isArray, and uses them to narrow types in the relevant branch.
How do object types describe data?
An object type describes the properties a piece of code expects. For example, a function can state that it needs an object with a string name property:
function greetUser(user: { name: string }): string {
return `Hello, ${user.name}!`;
}
This makes the function’s input contract visible. As your programs grow, object types help you communicate which properties code relies on and what kinds of values those properties hold.
What are generics for?
Generics let a function work with different types while preserving the relationship between its input and output. A first-element function can return the same type as the array’s elements:
Best Value
function firstElement<T>(items: T[]): T | undefined {
return items[0];
}
const firstName = firstElement(["Mina", "Kai"]);
const firstCount = firstElement([3, 5, 8]);
The type parameter T carries the element type through the function: a string array produces a string-or-undefined result, and a number array produces a number-or-undefined result. The result includes undefined because an array may have no first element.
A type parameter does not mean that every possible operation is allowed on a value. If a generic implementation needs a particular capability, constrain the type parameter to require it rather than assuming every type has that capability.
How do TypeScript types relate to JavaScript classes?
TypeScript uses JavaScript classes and adds ways to describe their members and type relationships. Keep the instance side separate from the static side: generic class parameters describe the instance side, and static members cannot refer to those generic parameters.

This distinction matters when a class has both per-instance data and class-level behavior. Learn ordinary JavaScript class behavior first, then use TypeScript’s class typing to express the contracts you need.
Where should you go next?
Use the Handbook’s progressive walkthrough to learn the language in sequence. Turn to its reference pages when you need a focused explanation of a particular feature; those pages assume more familiarity with terminology. If JavaScript is entirely new to you, follow the Handbook’s recommendation to work through introductory JavaScript material before continuing with TypeScript.
