The fastest way to type a euro sign depends on your device and active keyboard layout. In Microsoft Word on Windows, type 20AC and press Alt+X. On Windows with a numeric keypad, hold Alt and type 0128. On a Mac, use Keyboard Viewer to find the euro sign for your selected layout; on a Chromebook, AltGr+5 works with the English (US) International keyboard layout.

In Microsoft Word: convert a Unicode code
- Place the cursor where you want the symbol.
- Type
20AC. - Press
Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal code to €.
This method does not depend on having a dedicated euro key. Microsoft documents it in its keyboard shortcuts for language accent marks and symbols.

With a numeric keypad: use an Alt code
- Make sure Num Lock is on if your keyboard requires it.
- Hold down
Alt. - Type
0128on the numeric keypad, then releaseAlt.
The numeric keypad is required: Microsoft says the number row above the letter keys does not work for this Alt code. If your laptop has no separate numeric keypad, use Word’s Unicode method or Windows’ symbol picker instead. Microsoft’s example is: “For example, to insert the euro currency symbol, hold down the ALT key and press 0128 on the numeric keypad.”
Use the Windows symbol picker
Press Windows key + . (period), open the Symbols panel, and select the euro sign. This is a built-in option when you need the character outside Word or do not have a numeric keypad.

Find the euro sign on a Mac
There is no single shortcut established for every Mac keyboard layout. Use Keyboard Viewer to see what the active input source provides:
- Open the Input menu and choose Show Keyboard Viewer. If the Input menu is not visible, enable it in the keyboard or input-source settings.
- Confirm that Keyboard Viewer is showing your selected input source.
- Press
Option,Shift, or both; the viewer shows the characters available with those modifier keys. - Click or press the key that displays €.
If the sign is not available in the viewer, open Apple’s Character Viewer and insert it from the symbols and special characters. Apple explains these tools in its Mac guide to typing special characters. Avoid relying on a shortcut found for a different country’s layout: the active input source determines the mapping.

Type the euro sign on a Chromebook
On ChromeOS, keyboard layouts are managed as input methods. To add or select one, open Settings → Device → Keyboard → Change input settings. You can switch methods from the shelf; Ctrl+Shift+Space cycles forward and Ctrl+Space switches back.

For the English (US) with International keyboard input method, a Google Chromebook Community answer dated February 4, 2024, gives AltGr+5 as the euro-sign combination. AltGr is the right Alt key. This is specific to that layout, not a universal ChromeOS shortcut. Google’s ChromeOS keyboard and input settings guidance covers adding and switching input methods.

If the shortcut does not work
- Check the active layout. A symbol printed on a key or a shortcut found online may map differently under another software layout.
- Check the app.

Alt+0128code needs a numeric keypad; the top number row is not a substitute. - Use a character tool. Windows has the symbol picker, Mac has Character Viewer, and ChromeOS lets you switch input methods.
If you type in another language often, selecting a suitable input layout can make the right characters easier to access. For an occasional euro sign, a character picker or the symbol feature in your app is usually the simplest fallback.
