Yes—you can run two TVs from one cable box with a 1-input, 2-output HDMI splitter, but both TVs will show the same program. A splitter duplicates the box’s output; it does not add a tuner or let each room choose a different channel. For independent viewing, you’ll need provider-supported extra equipment or a multiroom service.
Choose the setup that matches how you watch
| Setup | Same program on both TVs | Different channels | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI splitter | Yes | No | Mirroring one cable box on two nearby TVs |
| HDMI extender or splitter kit | Yes | No, not by itself | Sending one box’s output to a distant room |
| Provider mini box or multiroom receiver | Often, depending on the service | May be supported | Independent room viewing through the provider’s system |
Provider features, equipment eligibility, fees, limits, and channel or recording restrictions vary by account, region, plan, and equipment. Confirm them with your cable provider.

How to show the same channel on both TVs
Use an HDMI splitter with one input and two outputs. The cable box remains the source: when you change the channel or playback at the box, the picture changes on both TVs. Samsung’s TV connection guidance shows the usual HDMI connection from a cable box to a television, while a splitter distributes one HDMI source to two displays.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the cable box’s HDMI OUT to the splitter’s HDMI IN.
- Connect one splitter output to each TV’s HDMI input.
- Turn on the box, splitter, and TVs, then select the connected HDMI input on each TV.
Before choosing a splitter, check that its supported resolution and HDCP version match the cable box and both TVs. Roku advises that if connected equipment requires HDCP 2.2, the splitter must also support HDCP 2.2 (Roku’s HDCP guidance). Xfinity likewise notes that protected content depends on HDCP compatibility across the TV, AV devices, HDMI cabling, and adapters (Xfinity’s HDMI troubleshooting guidance). A mismatch can cause a blank picture or a content-protection error.

Why a splitter cannot send different channels
A cable box tunes one channel and sends one HDMI output. A splitter duplicates that output; it cannot make the box tune a second channel at the same time. It also does not provide separate room controls or create access to the provider’s recording system.
If one viewer wants a different channel, ask the provider about a second receiver, mini box, or multiroom service. For example, Verizon’s Fios TV One information describes a hub-and-spoke setup with TV One Mini units connected by wired or wireless connection; it says up to 10 total boxes may be connected depending on the home setup. Virgin Media’s Multiroom information describes additional Stream boxes with separate channels and settings, and says TV 360 Mini boxes can watch recordings from a connected primary box. These are provider-specific examples, not universal features.

Getting the picture to a distant room
If the second TV is far from the cable box, a long HDMI run or an HDMI extender/splitter kit may be suitable. The kit still distributes one source, so it does not provide independent channels. Check the specific kit’s supported distance, cable type, resolution, and HDCP version. A Cable Matters manual describes extending a source such as a cable box and specifies HDCP 2.2 support for that product; its specifications do not establish how other kits will perform.

Troubleshoot a missing or protected picture
- No picture on either TV: Verify that the cable box HDMI OUT goes to the splitter input, that each TV is connected to an output, and that both TVs are set to the correct HDMI input.
- One TV works but the other does not: Check the splitter’s instructions and confirm the second TV’s input and cable connection. If the TVs support different signal formats, consult the splitter manual for how it handles both displays; behavior is not universal.
- HDCP or content-protection error: Check HDCP compatibility across the box, splitter, cabling, adapters, AV equipment, and TVs. Xfinity recommends removing adapters and connecting its box directly to an HDCP-compatible HDTV as a troubleshooting step.
- You need different channels: A splitter cannot solve this because the source box tunes only one channel. Ask the provider about a compatible second receiver or multiroom option.
