Two people were intercepted with a leopard skin near Purada village in Maharashtra’s Gondia district on 29 September 2026, according to a report published by Hindustan Times on 2 October. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence’s Mumbai zonal unit conducted the operation; the two people and the skin were handed to a forest officer for further action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The report does not establish the skin’s origin, its intended destination or buyer, or how the alleged network operated.
What happened near Purada
Hindustan Times reported that DRI’s Mumbai zonal unit intercepted two people near Purada village in Gondia district on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, and recovered one leopard skin. The report does not name the people. Its account describes the operation as a disruption of an inter-state trafficking syndicate, but does not give case-specific evidence of a route or explain the network’s structure. Read the report.
What is known about the legal next step
The report says the two accused and the recovered skin were handed to the Forest Range Officer, North Deoria Range, Gondia, for further action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. That is a reported handover, not a finding of guilt, a conviction or confirmation that a prosecution has concluded.
India Code’s Schedule I lists “Leopard or Panther (Panthera pardus).” The Hindustan Times account says trade, sale, purchase, possession and transportation of leopard skins and body parts are prohibited under the Act. See the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, on India Code.

What the report does not establish
The available account does not identify where the skin came from, where it was going, who might have bought it, or what route it may have travelled. It also does not name other alleged participants, describe the network’s organisation, or provide information about charges after the handover or any subsequent court outcome. The label “inter-state trafficking network” should not be read as proof of a particular route or an international connection.
How this case fits wider evidence on leopard-part trade
A 2012 TRAFFIC study estimated that at least four leopards had been poached and their body parts entered illegal wildlife trade every week in India for at least 10 years. It also found that close to 90% of reported leopard-part seizures in the decade it examined comprised skins alone. Hindustan Times also cites a reported illicit-market estimate of about ₹5 lakh to ₹1 crore for a leopard skin in India, depending on condition and demand. This is not an official valuation of the skin recovered near Purada.
