Her remarks signal outreach, not a confirmed decision by the DMK or any other party to join. She also said leadership of the bloc should be decided collectively.
What did Mamata Banerjee say about the INDIA bloc?
Speaking in Delhi on October 2, Banerjee said she was in touch with several parties and that the alliance could make room for more opposition groups. The Hindustan Times report names the DMK in its account of her response to a question about which parties might join. Banerjee also noted that some parties have local-level problems with Congress and are contesting elections.
That is not an announcement of formal membership. The report does not say the DMK, or another party, has agreed to enter the bloc. It describes a possibility and Banerjee’s broader effort to keep opposition parties in contact.
Did the DMK join the INDIA alliance?
No confirmed joining is established by the October 2 reports. Naming the DMK as a possible party to accommodate does not establish that it accepted an invitation or changed its status. Attendance at a meeting, outreach to a party, and formal membership are distinct things.

The distinction matters because opposition cooperation can vary by state and by issue. Parties may coordinate on a national matter even when they compete locally or face disagreements with other bloc members. Banerjee’s reference to local-level problems with Congress points to that complication rather than resolving it.
Who will lead the INDIA bloc?
Banerjee said leadership should be decided collectively. The Hindustan Times quoted her: “It has to be decided collectively.” She also said, “When the country is facing a crisis, our priority should be to save the country.” These are quotations as reported by the outlet, not independently reviewed audio or a transcript.

The Times of India separately reported her October 2 remarks on unity and collective action, quoting her as saying: “Our position is that when Constitutional institutions and democratic rights are at stake, political parties should examine the issue beyond their individual colours and interests.” The report attributes the statement to her Delhi press conference.
Why did the question of widening the bloc come up?
The immediate backdrop was a September 30 INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi focused on the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. India Today’s September 26 preview said those issues were on the agenda. Its September 30 account reported that Banerjee advocated contacting opposition groups outside the bloc that oppose the BJP, attributing parts of the discussion to unnamed sources rather than a public transcript.

India Today also reported allegations and concerns raised by opposition parties about election administration. Those are the parties’ claims as reported, not established findings in the coverage cited here.

A separate INDIA bloc meeting on June 8, 2026, had a reported attendance of 25 political parties, according to News On AIR, which attributed the figure to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. That report said AAP and DMK were among those that stayed away from that meeting. The figure describes attendance at the June meeting—not the bloc’s membership total, and not attendance at the September 30 meeting.
