Yes. On July 1, 2023, Twitter announced temporary limits on how many posts users could read each day. The announced figures rose several times that day, ending at 10,000 for verified accounts, 1,000 for unverified accounts and 500 for new unverified accounts. X’s current public limits page does not list a comparable daily reading quota, so those 2023 figures should not be treated as current limits.
How Twitter’s 2023 reading limits changed
The restriction was announced on July 1, 2023, as users reported trouble loading timelines and other posts. Musk described the limits as temporary. Contemporary reports recorded three sets of announced daily thresholds:

The figures are reported announcements, not proof that every account consistently encountered an identical counter. X did not publish a full explanation of exactly which views counted or when the daily allowance reset. TechCrunch reported the initial announcement, while The Washington Post covered the revisions and Ars Technica reported the sequence.
Why X said it imposed the cap
Musk said the temporary measure was intended to address “extreme levels of data scraping” and “system manipulation.” In practical terms, the stated aim was to limit large-scale automated collection of posts and reduce strain on the service. Those were X’s stated reasons; the announcement alone does not establish how much each factor contributed to the disruption. Reuters reported Musk’s explanation.

The announcement came during a broader service disruption. Users said timelines, replies, profiles and other content would not load, making it difficult to tell whether an error meant an account had hit a reading threshold or whether X was having a wider technical problem. Reading posts is not the same as posting them
The July 2023 measure concerned posts an account could read or retrieve. X’s current published limits describe different actions and should not be mistaken for a daily viewing quota.

X’s current help page lists account-action limits, including the figures above, but does not list a normal consumer daily cap on reading posts. For the current categories and qualifications, see X’s limits documentation. X generally uses “posts” rather than “tweets”; its post types help page describes how posts work.
Does the daily viewing limit still exist?
The July 2023 reading cap is a documented historical event, but X’s current public limits documentation does not publish the same consumer-facing daily reading quotas. That means there is no current official basis here for saying that the 10,000, 1,000 or 500 figures remain in force as ordinary users’ daily allowances. X may still restrict excessive or automated access for technical, security or anti-abuse reasons.

X’s Terms of Service dated May 8, 2025 address excessive access separately: under the terms and conditions they specify, requesting, viewing or accessing more than 1 million posts in a 24-hour period may trigger liquidated damages. That contractual provision is not a normal-user daily viewing allowance. Read the May 8, 2025 Terms of Service.
What “Rate limit exceeded” can mean
The message does not by itself prove that you have used up a daily reading allowance. Depending on the circumstances, it may reflect a temporary request throttle, an account or feature restriction, unusually rapid activity, automated requests, a broader X outage, or an app, browser, network or sign-in problem. Failed replies or embedded posts can also have causes unrelated to a daily counter, such as login requirements, deleted content, privacy settings or platform restrictions.

Steps to try
- Stop repeatedly refreshing or sending rapid requests. If automation or a third-party tool is involved, stop using it.
- Check whether X is experiencing a wider service disruption. A problem affecting many users or several parts of the service is less likely to be explained by a personal reading counter alone.
- Try the official X website or app. Switching interfaces can help identify an app or browser issue, but it will not necessarily clear an account-level restriction.
- If the problem appears tied to your sign-in session, sign out and back in. Update the official app, or clear the browser session if ordinary pages continue to fail.
- Wait for a temporary incident or restriction to clear; X does not publish one universal recovery time for every rate-limit error.
- If the restriction persists without an explanation, use the X Help Center and follow the relevant account-support or appeal route.
Do not assume that changing clients, creating a new account or subscribing will bypass an account or service restriction.

In the 2023 announcement, verified accounts received the largest reading quota. That historical category should not be equated automatically with every current Premium tier: verification and subscription arrangements have changed, and X does not publish the old reading figures as current Premium benefits.

X describes some subscription tiers as offering higher usage limits in certain areas, but its public materials do not promise that Premium removes every rate limit or provides unlimited post viewing. The published U.S. web prices on X’s February 2025 price-adjustment page were $3 per month or $32 per year for Basic, $8 per month or $84 per year for Premium, and $40 per month or $395 per year for Premium+. These are the listed prices from that page, not guaranteed current checkout prices; location, taxes, payment method and later changes can affect what a subscriber pays. Check X’s Premium price and feature information. Subscribe only if the other features are worth the price to you, not as a guaranteed fix for a reading-limit error.
